How Patient To Be With Cuemaker ?

Thought I had bought a partial shaft for my cue. I contacted the gentlemen who built my cue to have it fitted with matching ring work. He replied that he would do this or supply the shaft himself if I wanted. Deal fell through so 2 weeks later I sent him an email wanting to buy the shaft from him. I also asked him if he made JPs and if he would be interested in fitting a shaft for my wifes cue (not made by him). He does not know me so I stated that I would pay in advance for the work. No Reply. I have emailed once every two weeks(not wanting to be a pest) since Dec 18 and gotten no response. I asked a well respected Azer who deals with him often if something was wrong. He told me to send another email and he would ask the cuemaker to watch for it. That was a month ago, no response. I love the cue and really want this done by him. Did I insult him asking him if he would work on my wifes production cue? Was the price he quoted me too low? Is he so busy he doesn't want the work? Is he just a jerk? I have know idea because he won't answer emails or his phone! I now have Ryan @ Rat Cues working on my wifes cue (he answers emails) and will probably sell or trade my cue. I will not mention the makers name in case this is something I have done wrong. He has lost my respect and my money.

My translation of what you said is as follows....

I hired a cue maker to do some repairs.....(From cuemaker's standpoint.... Cool, a customer where I might make some profit or income on such repairs)

Deal to do repairs falls apart. (Reason unknown...Translation...=No profit for cuemaker)

Customer who went from being a profitable lead to a frugal consumer asks favor of cuemaker. (Sell me the shaft.....Translation....= The item you will make no profit on, because we can't reach agreement on price/terms)

Now, previously profitable customer asks if you can make me some joint protectors. (Translation to cuemaker.... Make me some of your least profitable product)

Now, customer emails and calls cuemaker frequently to ask why cuemaker doesn't want to work for less. Meanwhile, customer continues to earn money doing whatever customer does to earn money, but never understands why cuemaker doesn't want to make less deal after deal. Why am I the customer not important?? Only in the sport of pool do people negotiate so aggressively. I mean really, do you go Wal Mart, Costco and negotiate so profusely??

Now before you respond. You must understand I am not a cue maker, nor am a party interested in this transaction. I am former small business man who made his living in the billiard industry. In my 15 yrs in the industry, I go to know thousands of retailers, wholesalers, cuemaker, pool players and others. I guess the bottom line here is don't be afraid to allow someone to make a profit for their work.

I prefer to cover all bases here. So, if the reasons above are not correct above and you did offer the cuemaker a fair/profitable transaction, and still received no response from the cuemaker, then I propose you consider the possibility that cuemaker's are naturally pre-disposed to being unique/finicky/akward or just plain artistically different. They make stuff we can't make because they gain pleasure from creating something from nothing. They are all artists and demand to be treated as such. Anyone who treats them differently tends to get the cold shoulder. I mean do we go to car dealership and demand the level of perfection in a car that we do in a pool cue???

I believe the original poster is more upset about the precieved insult. He asked the maker for HIS PRICE and got HIS PRICE. if he needed more then quote more!

Second, do not look at your caller ID and screen your calls by refusing to answer and be a MAN about the situation CUE MAKER.

Tell him you want his business verbally or say I am too busy or prefer not to accept the job. PERIOD END OF STORY!

Why have people call and email REPEATEDLY when a deadline or quote causes the buyer to have concerns. BUYERS have budgets and plans. Holding the final payment for months and passing up deals to be ready at a MOMENTS notice when work is complete SUCKS! You may have bought that deal last week, if you knew it was going to be another year!

cue makers sometimes suck. just not on delivery day :)

All I did was ask the cuemaker to make a shaft to match the cue he built. All he had to do was say no. He said he would and quoted me a price. I offered him the opportunity to do more work if he wanted to @ his price. If Ratcues can make a profit on shafts I assume he can too. I never questioned his price on anything. I don't consider one email every two weeks to be harrasing. All he had to do was tell me he did not want the work, I would have moved on. I can't treat customers in my business this poorly and be around long. This cue was very special to me, now not so much. He can do business as he wishes, and I can have another build my new cue.

no u got it a bit wrong. he did not reneg on the deal for the repairs. what happened was he was going to buy a shaft from someone else and asked the cuemaker if he could do work on the shaft for his cue. the cuemaker replied he could, or he could just make him a shaft from a blank. the deal between the OP and the person he was originally going to buy the shaft from falls through and the OP takes the cuemaker up on his offer to buy the shaft directly from the cuemaker. so basically he's offering more work for the cuemaker and offering to pay more for that work. and since it was the cuemaker that offered this in the first place, the OP is confused as to why the cuemaker is no longer responding to him.

Exactly! I did not reneg on anything.

I was wondering cause Harris won't work on anyone elses cues but his own.
He may put a tip on for you, but that's about it.

You do have the correct email for this guy right?
I have had emails not get to me as people have miss typed the address or the reply address is not correct and the reply never gets delivered.
A phone call would solve the situation I am sure or a letter posted to him.

e-mails can be getting derailed

Some people can't receive e-mails from me because of filters on their mail servers. The end user is unaware of these filters and assumes he is getting all mail sent to him. Worth checking spam and junk folders if he has them but the e-mails that the server itself catches just disappear to never be seen again. I agree a phone call to get things straight is the best option. Obviously the OP has made some assumptions and formed a pretty negative opinion of the cue maker. That opinion of the cue maker's business dealings may be justified or totally bogus, without any real contact we don't know and neither does the OP.

I've tried calling three times, no answer. Another Azer that does a lot of business with him told him I was trying to reach him. Still no response. I have moved on. I have found out I am close To Pat Diveney and Jeff Olney and will consult with them about making my new cue.
