How to be free of pool addiction...

Don't shoot the messenger, but top flight pool players will attest to the phrase "Show me a great pool player, and I'll show you a misspent youth."

Pool, on it's highest levels, requires a tremendous amount of time, effort, recourses. Most of this will be taken away from family, friends, and loved ones, since it's almost impossible to balance work, school, and family and a top flight pool game.

I think that Robert Byrne's says it well "...pool should be considered more of a parlor game than a sport, but that anything worth doing is worth doing well."

Just enjoy the ride, but don't let it interfere with work, family, friends, or personal time.

The islands must be Loaded with Beautiful Women.:D

If you come visit, we can all go out and play. They Love Cut Throat. It was an easy game to teach them, without getting to much into rules like 8 Ball. And forget about 9 Ball, way to many rules.

They have the cutest little habits while playing. I was SHOCKED when one of them called "Space" as she rolled the Cue ball away from the Rail and was very carefull to measure the distance with the butt of the house cue she was playing with.:eek:

My Wife and I just looked at each other like "WTF" ?

Later that evening I asked her where she learned that, and she said her Father taught her that Ladies were allowed to do that. Turns out they had a table in the rec room of her parents house.

:D

Man, a wife who likes to shoot who has friends that look like that who do also. Pure heaven. Is the avatar of your wife, and if so, is she one of the beauties in the larger picture.

I almost forgot about the post's topic. Addiction, or obsession are two words that have come across my wife's mind on many occasions. Welcome to the club. You can only stop when you can run 10 racks of 9 ball, 250 in straight pool, and have the perfect cue! Good luck.

Addiction

I have been in AA/NA for going on 17 years in January . I picked
up a cue again last year and do not plan on ever putting it away .Its
fun , good for the mind and in leauges I meet alot of cool people . I really
think you can only replace one addiction for another if you are an addict /
or have an addictive personality . I left pool behind when I 1st got clean
and sober back in 89/90 .So now I am so glad to be back and on the good
side of things .
Oh and BTW Lenny good for you on making a stand with the 10 and now
having a woman that supports your passion .;)

Lets put this in perspective. I played WoW for 2 years straight. I would stay up to all hours of the night, making myself late to work and being a total zombie all day long. Then along came pool...

After a friend of mine spun me up on the game it was smooth sailing. I can't get pool out of my head. Long story short: I quit WoW because it interfered with my Sunday night leagues... and my Monday night practice...and my Thursday night 9-ball.... well you get the picture :D

Pool > World of Warcrack = Greatest sport that ever was. So sorry but you're stuck brother.

ALSO could someone please make my little green thingy under my rank go away? Someone accidentally gave me bad rep and its bumming me out.

I used to play a lot of snooker. Many years ago while I was going to University, I skipped school to go watch Marco Fu practised in a pool hall called the Embassy Clue. The club was really close to my university. Then they started to have a 9 ball tournament there, and so on and so forth. So, I ended up spending lots of hours in that place. I even witnessed a perfect game 147 by Marco while he was practising.

But I was a very lousy player so playing pool was not as much fun as watching. After a while, I got other things in life and have not been around pool for a while. The only thing I liked back then which was pool related was pool cues.

Now my job has everything to do with pool and pool players, and I get to watch lots of tournaments. But it was not until very recently that I am starting to become addicted to playing the game.

I think it has to do with the fact that Mr. Kuo from Taiwan showed me a new stroke while we were hanging out in the US Open. With this new stroke, I am starting to play much better, although I am still inconsistent because it takes some getting used to.

I think the fact that I am making more balls is why I am addicted. I dont mind that as long as I can focus on my job. I still try to limit my pool to only 1 day a week, but lately, I have been going to the pool hall every night.

I have no intention of ever becoming a pro player, but the enjoymnent of the game has gotten me addicted.

Richard

You have not reached the highest level of addiction until you think about pool during sex.

I think about it in my dreams, taking a shower, doing laundry, etc.

I am with you brother. I will never stop playing.

The better you get, the more you want to play. What was that "stroke" you are talking about?

You made the right choice but for some people they choose this game over life itself and sadly most of them die alone and broke.:(

Hell, being broke aint so bad. As for being alone, you'll always have your cues(unless you hock them) to talk to

Jake (talks to his cues for hours on end)

Addictions can be a bad sort of thing if out of control...see, that's the key word there..."control"! Some of the best players I've ever played in my life, were the ones that had walked away from pool, and came back later to play the game. I can tell you from experience that it's hard to beat someone that plays pool because they want to, and not because they can't stop playing because they're addicted. If you want to, or ever expect to be a good pool player in your lifetime...I think your first step is to get your game under control...or your outlook in life is going to be playing pool to live...and not living to play pool...and live life at the same time!

EX Addict, that still plays a mean game! Glen

I've been there, and I must say I disagree with most posts on this thread.

My first year of playing pool made me neglect other aspects of my life. I eventually realized that I was hoping to ESCAPE from the inconvinient aspects of my life through pool. I also began to experience more frustration with my poolplaying. Till at some point it wasn't fun at all, so why would I, an amateur, do it if it is not enjoyable? All I could think about was, dammit I'm still unable to run a 6 pack or something.

Then I went through some rough shit with my former girlfriend and took time away. I resolved some of the personal issues that actually were hindering my enjoyment and development in pool. I'm still not entirely cured, I still sometimes resort to pool to forget, much like alcohol or any other drug. I have an addictive personality...

I must say this:

a) I've met quite a few A players and shortstops who have balanced lives. Who read, work, foster human relationships, run errands, physically exercise, and have interests other than pool. As a matter of fact, I know more B players who are embittered and addicted to the game than A players, I think you know why. Just ask Blackjack;

b) I understood eventually that the learning process was its own reward. That learning the game is what was most rewarding, not some kind of rat-race with the other addicts to see who can string the most racks the soonest or who spends the most time marvelling at Mika Immonen on tape;

c) Ultimately, I think, as is the case with all addictions, the origin of the problem (and it is a problem if it is disrupting other aspects of your life) lies OUTSIDE the addiction. There is something in your personal life, past or present, that is unresolved... that you are attempting to escape from, or that makes you feel unfulfilled unless you resort to pool as an escape mechanism. Examine the origin;

d) I decided to put a cap on my practice. Interestingly enough I've been learning FASTER, because my practice nowadays is more focused and enjoyable. One way I did it is to not allow myself just to hit a ball. I now have to be putting my most sincere effort into accomplishing something, every time I find myself at a pool table. Drills, quantifying them, races with the ghost, and a pool notebook detailing achievable, realistic goals for the near future did the trick for me. I also don't just play 9 ball for fun. I try to compete, which requires some sort of discipline;

That being said, I'm not completely over it. I still sometimes slip into my embittered addiction and escapism. It takes constant effort. BTW, I've had serious problems with alcoholism in the past, so I know a thing or two about addiction in general despite my young age.

Hope this helps.

This is why God invented cell phone and wireless internet. You gotta multi-task while your opponent is running 13 racks on you :D

I hear there's a guy in FLA that can do all that while HE's running 13 racks:D
