FYI, I just posted a video that discusses and demonstrates stroke “best practices” involving acceleration, follow-through, and speed control for normal shots, finesse shots, and power shots. Check it out:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:16 - Speed Control
2:03 - Stroke Finish
3:11 - Finesse Shots
4:04 - Power Shots
5:36 - More Info

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

Does anybody disagree with what or how I presented anything in the video? Or does anybody have anything to add? I thought this one might be a little controversial, and result in some interesting discussion.

Dr Dave, you start off your video stating how important it is to accelerate smoothly through the ball. I might have missed it, but how do you know if you're accelerating through the ball? What can you do to insure you do?

Several ways:
  • Make sure it feels like the cue is speeding up all the way into and through the ball (even though this isn't actually happening). It helps to think this way and and have it feel like this during practice.
  • Do speed control drills. If you don't accelerate smoothly and completely, you will not have consistent results.
  • Video tape yourself and make sure it looks like you are accelerating smoothly and completely.
  • Make sure your grip is still relaxed after each stroke, because tension is a common cause for not finishing the stroke.
Maybe other people can suggest other ideas.

I sure wish Dr. Dave and his videos had been around when I was first learning pool. What an incredible advantage! Anyone who fails to fully utilize all of the valuable resources he offers is a FOOL, and a world class one at that.

I like it. Don't be a world class fool. Watch Dr. Dave videos!

Right here at the beginning.

The cam action of the taper rise caught my eye. It creates a slicing motion at the tip.

The tip goes up and down naturally due to a fixed-elbow pendulum stroke. The taper makes the tip rise while the upward grip hand motion during the follow-through tries to make it go down.

Yeah. Painfully obvious in snooker. I like how the expansion point coincides with the finish.

How about a new Diamond table video. You say the rails are bouncy in this one. People all think I'm nuts now for saying the same every Diamond thread. You can join in the fun;)

One thing that helped me a lot is finishing the stroke with the cue tip touching the cloth. On any shot, not only the draw. It naturally requires all the action for a smooth stroke - a nice follow thru and a natural elbow drop with a relaxed grip. Solved my many troubles

Stop being so stubborn. Get the glasses. Clear as day you are not seeing through the lens.

I used to have strong glasses before laser surgery. You can still see the show through the glasses because the corner of the lens bends the light towards the eye. I still have to agree with you that it seems Dave is looking over the glasses. 🤓

Excellent video btw and a lot of tips and pieces of information!

I watched the video in its entirety yesterday. My first impression is it didn’t actually have content. It basically boiled down to short backstroke for soft shots and long backstroke for fast shots. It didn’t match the video title.

I’ll watch it again later today to see if it feels any different.

I agree that I should probably try billiards glasses, and I agree that it might appear that I am looking over the lenses (especially with your yellow arrow drawn so high above the pupils, and due to the camera angle), but I can assure you that I was seeing the OB through the lenses with crisp focus during all shots in this video.
