How to identify a Gilbert cue?

hi all,

I'm quite interested in getting a plain jane from Andy as well and i've heard that his cues hit quite stiff. How stiff is stiff? Something like the hit of schon's?

Thanks!

Ive only played with one of Andy's cue. It had phenolic joint collar, wood to wood joint and a 3/8x10 joint pin. That cue played extremely stiff....

Talked to Vicky Gilbert. He is in Vegas and I won't be able to talk to him till Monday. As soon as I get a hold of him I will post.

Ok guys, a little update on the dilema about the gilbert signature. Last night as I was screwing together my Gilbert cue, I decided to look over my cue with a fine toothed comb. To my surprise, something caught my eye that I have never seen before. You see my cue is a southwest style cue with Cocobolo and curly maple wood. The cocobolo as you should know is very dark and has very fine black lines throughout the grain. Well Andy signed my cue so small with a fine tip pen(Gilbert 04) in the little corner at the base of the point that it looked like another black grain line on the wood. I will try to post a pic on how small this. It's kinda cool that he did sign it that small. I pointed it out to Skippy last night and he had to squint to look for it. I will see Robb and Rodney Thursday and I will have to look over Robb's cue. But I know for a fact that his is a Gilbert. He actually ran into Andy at a tournament and Andy was tellling him that his cue was a brother sister cue which means he had only made another one similar to it. The person who had the other cue happened to be there and they compared cues. Both cues had something just a tiny bit different to set them apart. Anyways, thats my story. ARM

Stiff meaning hitting the ball felt like a tank? I'm going back and forth on getting a Gilbert due to never hitting with one and me having the preference of a softer hitting cue. I've trying to find out for sure. I've hit with someone's JossWest cue and found that I would consider it stiff. Am I far off the mark here?

From what I've heard, Andy's cues usually hit pretty stiff (especially his 3/8x10 phenolic joint SW-style cues). However, the joint type chosen also affects the hit characteristics.

After talking with Jeff (Andy's agent), I e-mailed the specs for my 8-pointer Szamboti-style dream cue. It'll have plenty of scrimmed ivory inlays, ebony points, exhibition-grade birdseye maple forearm, and a 5/16x14 SS joint. I ordered it back at the start of April, and it's due some time in July. Yes, the wait is KILLING me =p

I've heard that you can throw down an ivory joint to soften the hit, but I don't think I'd wanna do that.

Likewise. I like the way my Schon hits, so I decided to go with the same joint type on the above mentioned cue.

You're good ... you did get $850 for it on eBay ... congratulation.

Gilbert seems to be very hot on eBay right now .. very few there and when there is one, it's bidded up pretty high.

I think I'm out of Gilbert's price range for now ... unless someone wants to trade. I have very nice Capone (ivory!!!), Jensen, Espiritu, Coker for straight up or partial trade if anyone is interested.

Given that the cue has an ivory joint, and ring, and is in mint or new condition. I wouldn't take less than $850 without testing the waters on ebay.

Weight is close to 19oz. I would be happy to measure the exact weight and balance point prior to selling the cue. I can't do that at the moment though.

I think that a good Titlist 1pc is $250-300 if you can get one.
The ivory joint, Hoppe ring, and ferrule alone ad at least $300 more from Gilbert.

I doubt you could lose money ay $850.
The cue is mint or new.

I think the cue is sweet but I have two nice Titlists that haven't been converted yet and one is an incredible purpleheart Hoppe. I am going to have a couple more built without wraps. This Gilbert cue is for sale though.

Thanks,
Eddie

You can always do a sleeved Ivory joint that will hit the same as wood to wood and give you the look of Ivory.

"hit" of a gilbert

my gilbert has a solid 1/2 inch ivory joint, and this cue hits a ton.

its hard to descibe, but with this cue, i can "feel" the cue ball more than any cue i've ever owned. the shaft is probably a medium stiff hit, as i've seen stiffer and more flexible shafts. very little deflection(i don't use more than a tip or so of sidespin, so no cue should deflect much with that).

so, its hard to explain, but its like a "soft" stiff hit. i love the way the solid ivory feels. also, i don't know if its typical of ivory jointed cues or not, but this cue seems to "juice" the ball very well. predator can say all they want about increased spin, but they don't have anything on this cue.

thanks

FINALLY! Someone else who describes the hit as "soft" stiff. I have one (not Gilbert) that does the same. It is a solid ivory, flat-faced joint with a radial pin. This one has a very unique taper that is stiff (little deflection), but still able to easily "juice" the ball.

Thinking of joining the Gilbert fanclub ... how do you identify a Gilbert when buying it online? Is it signed or ???

If you have a Gilbert for sale, let me know right away as I'm negotiating for one right now!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jazz, if you're still looking for a Gilbert, I have one for sale. It's an '01 Jump/Break Purpleheart cue that I got from Vegas in 2001. It is actually my playing cue, and it plays great and solid. This past March, I had Andy install a matching collar to a blank 314 Predator 1 shaft with a medium Moori tip. I also had him clean and install a Moori tip on the original shaft. I have custom cue on order is why I'm selling this off. Otherwise, I'd keep this forever if I could afford to keep it.

Only Ted Harris (cleaned/recondition the original shaft at Valley Forge last year) and Andy has worked on this cue.

I've had 2 offers; one is too low, and the other one doesn't have the money yet and isn't 100% positive she wants to buy it.

I belive you're from DC, and I'm from Northern VA. Send me a PM if you'd be interested.
