I've heard people speak of reading the rack...could someone explain this indepth please? I bought the DVD Racking Secrets, and it was very helpful, But there has to be a way to play a ball when getting a bad rack.

It seems your actually asking two questions? Reading the rack is the expression once the balls are broke hows the layout look, how's the read? checking the rack/bad rack is done once your opponent is completed and you give your ok or not after inspection. On a bad rack, it sometimes can be the shooters advantage, especially in 9 ball with loose corner balls.kamasutraguru said:
Sorry for the improper terminology, let me put it this way. I play guys at the poolroom, and they put slug racks on top of slug racks on me. These same guys sometimes run into players who know how to break their rack and they get owned. Like I said I bought the Racking Secrets DVD so I know which spaces hurt and help, just wondering why some people can break through the bad racks.

If you are getting bad racks, check them and have your opponent re-rack until they look good, or ask to rack your own. This is what I do so that I don't have to worry about how to break through a bad rack. Just my 2 cents.

When someone tries to slug rack me sometimes i like to hit maybe half the one ball. Use a lot of top spin (depending on what side im breaking from) and forcing the cue ball through the rack to spread out the balls better.
Just go onto the table and keep racking slugs for yourself and then practice breaking. I know a lot of my friend's friends love to slug rack not really knowing why they do what they do except with "when i do this they dont make a ball". I just tell my friend to rack for me and i practice different breaks.
