How to Run a South Bend Lathe 1941

That was very cool!! At least the guy rolled up his sleeves, but not a pair of safety glasses or a faceshield in the whole shop!!

Thanks!!

Gary

Wouldn't you just love to have that lathe in the same exact condition as in that video? Probably only a 3/4" spindle bore but I'd love to have it in my shop.

Not much different looking than mine, lol.

Reminds me of the movies we watched in 8th grade metal shop around 1965.
South Bend was really ahead of their time, producing a Youtube video in 1941....:smile-us-down:

Nice looking lathe Joe. Really. It looks like she's in nice condition. I've come close to buying a similar one a couple times but I really want one with at least a 1.25 bore. I want to be able to live tool all my threads. Trying to take my friend's advice and not buy less than what I really want. I still might get one like that though as it will do everything I want except the A Joint threads. I think I'd be pretty happy with your lathe :)

I love this lathe. Its an old monster, but it runs true, and its reliable. Ive had to do a few things to it and work on it a little bit, but i dont mind, because like a cuemaker i know told me, at least i will know my machine better. Im still amazed at how smooth and quiet this lathe runs for being a 1967 machine. This lathe will do everything im capable of doing. I have a lot to learn with cuemaking, but the little that i do know is all possible on this machine.

I can't see this video. I had problems watching one of Kim's posted vids too.
I get an Loading URL over HTTP error 2032.

The best I could find out is that either being from Canada, I can't retrieve
the domain or maybe I have to upgrade my flash player.
I can watch other streams with Abobe Flash tho.

Sorry Terry but its too big to send via email (128 megs). When the video starts to come up try right clicking on it and see if you have an option to download. It gives me one using the Real Player Downloader. Other than that you can try using one of the website scavenger tools. I have a proprietary tool I use but also have another one on my laptop, I think its called Web Ripper. That will let you copy any type of file you want off a website. FYI, the file has an MP4 extension.

I sure do miss that lathe, its in a better home now tho, when that thing was in my shop it was always a mess i might have cleaned it as good as pictured twice in one yr lol

nice video.

Man, it purrs like a kitten ;) lol. I hit it with the shop vac every other day or so. I gotta take care of it, because someday my son will be running it :)

Terry,
Go to adobe.com and download the latest version of the flash player. If you are running xp or higher you don't need to reboot but you need to close all your browser windows after the installation starts. Have you tried using a browser like Firefox? Also, try to disable your antivirus or firewall since that might be the cause of your issue as well.
The video is very cool.

There used to be some videos on this site - http://www.wswells.com/ but they have been removed.
However - still some good info there.

Nice, Thanks. Here is another site with some of the old SB Manuals. It has the book that movie was based on.

Oh, here is an ad from Popular Mechanics, November 1948. It shows all the different models and gives descriptions. I like the 13" Toolroom Lathe. Hope the link works correctly.

I really want a big boy lathe but it needs at least a 1.250 bore, 30" IBC, reasonable price and be able to get into my basement... the last one is the kicker. 600 lbs is no biggie, I'll just build a sled but 1,500+ lbs.... I'd be too afraid one of my friends would get hurt. When I need to hire riggers I think I'm past the "hobby" stage.

Here are a number of videos for when you have a few hours of time to get some great knowledge. These are made by MIT and this one covers 1 Tapping
2 Boring, 3 Knurling, 4 Cutting Tapers with the Compound, 5 Turning Shafts Use of live center, 6 Single Point Thread Turning. There are other videos that cover other aspects of tools.

There sure are some great videos of how to do things these days.I have never seen machines fail because they were kept clean.
