How to soften a to hard tip ?

Not to take over this thread but I would be curious how I quickly compress my new layered tip? I had a new tip installed yesterday after about a year and it is extremely soft, probably because I break with my player and that helped compress my old tip. FWIW I use a Tiger Everest.

Soft tips will only be soft for a period of time. All layered tips compress and harden over time. You may want to use a dedicated break cue with a hard tip to delay the Everest tip from compressing to soon. JMHO.

i am sorry i havent read all the posts
but
if you want a softer tip buy a medium or soft!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yikes::yikes:
just sayin.......

Any glazing issues?

In case anybody is wondering, I'm talking about putting oil on the tip after it has been installed.

I have played with them after they have set for about an hour, or less, and didn't have glazing problems. The tip may still be a little oily on top, but once you put on a good coat or two of chalk it works fine.

mine are old

My guy who works on my cues told me it is hard to find a good elk master tip. I had a couple installed on a few of my cues to only have one good and the other bad from start. He said he can buy a box of 50 and maybe 5 out of the 50 be good and the rest junk. He said they used to be really good but in the last few years quality has went south.

My elkmasters are old so naturally better than anything you can get today! :D

However, there are ways to sort tips in a hurry when you buy bulk like elkmaster. A very quick measurement of height and diameter, just set a caliper and roll through them. Then the key thing, weigh them. Out of a box of Elkmaster I believe nine were very light. Less than fifty cents apiece, tossed them. There were three or four very heavy, I wanted to test these but they were lost in a flood. All of the other tips fell into two groups with all in each group being the same weight. All of these I have installed have been good tips.

Less than thirty minutes time, more like fifteen, a tip installer can be sure he is putting on quality tips, no comebacks.
