How would you handle this situation..

How do I handle it? I go to court and let the judge/jury decide and then I countersue the bartender for defamation and slander.

No judge in the world is going to believe that a guy who just won 1500 and an expensive cue is going to wreck his own property in a place he plays at frequently (I am guessing your buddy is/was a regular).

Bet on it.

That Sheldon Lebow builds a SOLID cue. Shit I want one those if I ever get in a bar fight. Any cue that can break a pool table is rocking, and it plays good too? That's the nuts of a cue right there boys.

Just a thought, can you prove the cue that was busted wasn't yours? I mean that alone should take care of almost all of it.

Shoulda been playing on a Diamond!!!

"*DYMONDWOOD rails are
burn and dent resistant."

I won't get any green rep for this but I understand the bar owner's point of view. He needs somebody to pay for the damage and your buddy was part of the game.

It stinks but since your buddy made $1,500 dollars from the game he should up some money to pay for repair of the table.

Sounds like a fishy story to me. Too many loose ends.

1) who brings that cue to a strange bar?
2) He left his girl at the bar?
3) First question a judge would ask. Why did you bust a 3 grand cue that you just won ?
4)The damage to the table would be small.Small claims court stuff. No shysters involved.
5) The guy is playing $500 sets with a 3 grand cue. I would assume he would be savvy enough to tell you to hold the cue as collateral until he made good on the bet.
6) $500 sets of eight -ball?
7) You are gambling on a pool game in a bar. Sorry, you already defamed and slandered yourself.
8) No way any bar tender I knew (and we're talkin a whole bunch here)
wold ever call the coppers for this supposed incident. No blood , no broken bones , no medics, no fuzz.
9)If she said she saw it happen, that would imply that she knew they were
gambling. Oops!

Something missing here.

1) I know several people in this area who don't play unless it's for money, bars around here is where most of the big fish hang out. Easy money off drinkers. The bars here get more action than pool halls themselves. It's not uncommon to see guys around here with high dollar cues. I play in decent sized bar tournament here every Friday night, I know several players who attend that play with Palmers, fancy Bensons etc..

2) I never said 100% sure he had a woman with him, people THOUGHT that a girl was with him, she was just on the lottery machines. Nothing more ever came from it.

3) The cue was busted by the guy who lost, not my buddy who won.

4) Yes, it will be small claims court.. but the fact that my buddy did not do it and is being held responsible is the point here.

5) You would think that but he didn't. I personally think he was just so pissed off that he lost, he didn't want my buddy to have the satisfaction of owning the cue. He lost it and he knew it, he wasn't leaving with it in his hands. He didn't have problems handing over the cash, but the cue he did apparently.

6) Yes, $500 sets on 8-Ball. That was the proposition my buddy came up with thinking the guy wouldn't bite.. but he did. I mean if you're a confident enough player and you get someone to bite on $500 sets, wouldn't you go for it? It's a little higher than what is normally put on games around here.. but it's not to uncommon. I've seen $50-$100 a ball in 9-ball around here several times.

7) I don't think gambling on bar games slanders or defames anyone. Just about any good road player or "hustler" has got action in bars around the country.

8) Well, destruction of property.. I would have called the cops.

9) I wish it was easy as that. She never mentioned the word gambling. The only reason that bar is on the hot seat for it now is my buddy in his Police report said they were playing for money etc..

MillCity , you're probably right all the way. It's just that it seems like everybody acted exactly opposite of the way they should have acted.
If your buddy still has the cue, send it to Scott Sherbine of Proficient Billiards.
He can fix anything. :wave2:

Go to court

You and your buddy didn't do anything wrong. They (bar owner) can not pin anything on you. You were a direct witness, the bar owner is full of BS.
If the bar owner sues your buddy, counter-sue, get an attorney, and add legal fees on top of the countersuit.

I have seen a few cues busted on tables, and the tables were not damaged, but the cues sure were.

Stick with the truth, but you are probably 86'd for gambling and he is losing his lottery sales.....
The guy probably said his girlfriend was ther. Makes for a more trusting situation, better than "I came in the win a shitload of money then bolt out the door"
It is better to have a reputation for honesty than to be honest if you want to sandbag or hustle, Just Saying....
And I have been on the other side of story filled with BS, it sucks. But I would love a pool cue that could take out a pool table. Must have been one hell of a breaker, John

I would just go to small claims court and fight it using you as a witness with the police report in hand. Just curious, how does $50-$100 a ball in 9-ball work?

The story pretty much comes down to my buddy playing a gentleman for $500 in races to 5 8-ball. The guy eventually runs out of money ($1,500 later)... offers up his Sheldon Lebow cue to my buddies $200... he agrees. My buddy takes him 5-3 in the last set... The gentleman calmly breaks down his cue... then does something NO ONE expected... proceeded to swing the butt of the cue as hard as he could onto the rail of the table.. then bolts from the bar.. leaving the cue pretty much toast, and the rail of the table. The bartender immediately calls the police, they come and the bartender (who seen nothing) proceeds to tell the Police my buddy was mad that he lost and slammed his cue into the table damaging it.. now the bar owner is suing him for the damages to the table.

let it go. he got the dough and that's all that matters. he can sell the shaft on the net for what ever he can get and call it a day.

Man I'm glad I don't go to bars anymore. Usually the only thing at them is a bunch of drunks and trouble. I don't like to be around either.
