How Would You Play This? 1/23/09

This came up last night. Big pockets, old cloth, bouncy rails. I'm giving 5 on 10 and I'm up 9-7. I got out from here.

Draw on the 7 with a touch of right to the first diamond below the side pocket and downtable for the 8, should be easy getting back for the 9.

Its 2009 Jude :)

Yes, I tried to change the year. Your approach didn't seem possible. I was simply gonna bounce off the rail too much. Left of side, I could do but right of side, no.

Selftaut said it right, imo. Drawing just short of the side gets you high on the 8 and you're out. It's hard to judge without really knowing how the conditions were. If the 7 was a little closer to the rail or on it, I'd say low-inside to bring it across to the long rail and have the english reverse, bringing the CB down table.

I couldn't fathom banking the 7 cross-corner or spinning forward with the 9 there.

Well, on second thought, if the rails were REAL bouncy--- you could force-follow over and around the 9 to the lower part of the short rail, basically 3 rails around.

Cross bank the 7 (if it is available), cue ball uptable for the 8, make sure you pass the 9 ball with the bank because it will be safe if you miss it.

Just a guess here, I liked the first response but it does not sound like the table would allow it.

I would really be surprised if the low inside reverse worked, usually that shot needs real slippery new cloth. If that was the one, that is one great hit.

Extreme bottom left hard? hitting left of side pocket on bottom rail just to the right of middle diamond. With bouncy rails, the side spin would take affect more on the 2nd rail than first, which sends the cue ball to around the first 1 diamond to the right of the side pocket on top rail.

Ok, if you could not draw out, I would have done 1 of 2 things. I might have kicked at the 7 with a full ball hit to hold the CB there and put the 7 downtable and possibly behind the 8. OR I would have cinched the 7 and played possition for a bank on the 8.

The inside english 3 rails back to the 8 looks to risky to me where the 9 is on the cuetable, if you happen to hit it a little bad and hit the 9 full with the CB then you left yourself a long bank or safety. I would rather play a shot where I have command of the table.

I like the Z pattern approach as well, hitting below the side pocket in order to pick up an angle on the 8. Equipment dictates the specifics, but I usually play it like a stop shot with about a tip of right; that way I don't have to try to guess how much draw it's going to take after that first cushion. As Buddy would say, play it like a spin shot rather than a draw shot.

If the rails are so bouncy that you don't believe any spin will take off of the first cushion, you could use inside draw and play the two-rail reverse shot, although that would probably be my third choice. Second pick would be to use straight follow and try to bend the cueball around the 9 and come around 3 rails.

I agree with others. Here's how I envision the exact path of the CB:

I wouldn't use much right english on this shot. I rely mostly on draw here, but I think it's a matter of personal preference and exactly how much angle you have on the 7. If the cut were any thinner, I would need the right english to help get the CB back.

I would really need to be on the table and see this first hand... I may not have the exactly english right on this... MIght be a hard force follow with more side... Not quite sure need to be behind the CB to see what will happen... need to get off the side rail with top/inside of some sort to get to the back rail short of hittind the 9 to get around table.. but I think there is a variation of this that goes... actually, Im gonna try it today.

Edit* and the shot Andrew diagrammed, I've practiced a bunch on that 2/3 rail draw.. I fairly confident I could pull that shot off here as well.

I like this too. You're not going to get straight in on the 8 and you're on the correct side of the 8 where even if you get frozen on the rail you can still get on the 9.

With Jude diagramming it though I expect he did something weird. He probably made the 7-9 bank combo or something

Given the distance, the amount of speed and the steep angle, I had no chance of getting this result. If I were closer and more shallow, this might've been possible but from where I was, this would have posed a big risk.

If you're going to go rail first you might as well hit it low left and avoid the 9. I bet that's what Jude did. Why else would he post this?

I don't care what the equipment, no one is going rail-first on the 7 unless they're playing with their girl friend....or boss.

This shot is very workable, especially if the pockets are forgiving. You just need a clean draw stroke with left english. The seven seems to be just off the rail enough to make this shot fairly routine. However the z shot is the most practical.

That's funny AND probably correct! :D

Jude is a really good player. I don't believe he would ever go rail first because that was the best option. If he did that, he was showing off.
