i myself would have to take the 3 in the side first. trying to keep the cue ball somwhat near where it is in your picture, then try to bank the 4 off the opposing rail, and into the corner above where it currently sits. not a shot i would probably make, but a shot i would go for lol.
I think you're hooped, but playing a safe like this might buy you a better position if you get back to the table.
That is a tough one! I think I would try to bank the 3 ball cross corner (to block the 13) and try to tuck the cue ball behind the 8. Or if the angle was good I may try the cross corner to block the 13 but run my cue ball into the 11 trying to make it and leave a long tough cut with possible traffic from the 3 ball. In most cases I would try to put a ball between the 8 and the pocket but in this situation I don't think you can put the 3 there and moving the 4 now is probably going to result in loss of game. The only other thing I can think of would be to bump the 8 over and block the 11. If you play it just right it could buy you enough time to get that 4 ball in a better position and maybe win? I don't think your opponent could get out with ball in hand if you block that pocket.
There's just no hero out for solids this inning. I'd do what SuperGreen recommends. Having the 3 well exposed by a pocket and near your 4 ball is critical strategy. It's a reasonably easy safe, albeit delicate touch is needed.
What does your opponent do now? He either goes for a difficult kick on the 11, in which case he probably either gives you BIH or maybe kicks it out of the jaws. Or he shoots at the 13 and opens a hole up for your 4 ball.
If you get BIH you shoot the 3 and if needed, open a pocket for your 4.
The chance of your opponent getting out from behind a nicely blocking 8 ball is not good. Just don't leave the 10 or 11 open.
This was the first thing I thought of. Like you said low percentage but possible.
Given my luck, I would probably make the bank but miss the break out.

You've got a real loser here. But the 3 ball already limits his position possibilities on the 8. Let's make it as tough on him as possible to get easy shape on the 8 and get your 4 into a place where you could make it if he screws up. The pressure will be on him to run and position himself on the 8. That's #1. #2 is to pray.

Thats exactally what i ended up doing. The guy i was playing kicked at the 10, hit it just enough to clear the pocket and scratched, leaving me an easy win.
I like the idea of going for the gusto by playing the 3 in the corner off of the ten and playing shape for the 4 ball. If this ever comes up again, thats what i am going to try.

I don't know how I missed this easy out. I'm totally embarrassed now.
I like playing the shot neil suggested but its tough. Depending on what rules your playing by I might just take an intentional foul and roll the 8 ball behind the 11 ball. Even with ball in hand he has a tough shot to get out.
It looks to me like your best hope to win this game is to just pocket the three in the side and position you cue ball to bank the four ball four rails to the corner where the 13 ball is. I believe anything else is an even worse percentage.

I would play a YouTube "Pat Fleming" part 1 (I think) double kiss safety trying to leaving the CB center ON the short rail below the 11ball. Other than a safety your odd are slim to none.
