How Would You Play This?

this,

or if you dont have enough angle on the 3ball to do this, the second option is this:

there is some double kiss danger, but you dont really have anything else.

also, i dont like playing a safety here. You need a perfect shot and you have zero margin of error. Also, even if you nail the safety and freeze the cb to the 8 , the kick is fairly easy so we don't accomplish much.

Other then that, i like Aaron_S shot.

Don't know how to draw on these diagrams, but... Something that occured to me was going off the left side of the 4, as you look at it from the cue ball, to pull it off the rail - then go 2-3 rails back up to behind the 3 & 8, as close to the 8 as possible. Still tough...

After posting this I noticed the suggestion was already given & is what you did...

Good to know I'm not insane all alone!

This is a really tough layout for solids and I have to admit, there's a really good chance I would lose with solids no matter what I do. My inclination is to shoot the shot below. I'm gonna make him work for it. Leave the 3 there to provide cover on the 8 ball and hope to move the 4 into the same area, hopefully block the close pocket. If anything, I want that 4 ball off that rail for IF he lets me back to the table.

here's my choice

It's a little nuts but that's about all we have here I think. Hit the 4 thin with a lot of left and some good things can happen.

First off, to hell with 8 ball.. second off, that's a very very very sh*tty situation..

Draw the cue ball back behind the 8 for a safety.. pray he misses the long cut...

Play this shot with lots of top. I made this exact shot against "Fats" to close out a 4 rack run.

My drawing sucks but you play the carom into the bottom right ball, the top carries the cue ball into the top right ball and leaves your opponent safe behind the eight ball. :)

Yeah this is definately the easier option.. just don't leave it on the rail, get it up frozen on the 8 without moving the 8

Jude beat me to the option I would have done...

However...If I played more one pocket, I would perhaps opt to go for the win and pocket the 3 in the side and then shoot the same shot as above...calling the 4 in the corner...If you hit it pocket speed your at least going to take that pocket away for the 8-ball and leave a hanger in case your opponent does not get out....I suspect the better 1 hole players in my area that make the two railer about 1 in 3..... I would think that has to be at least as good as the number of times your going to win if you try to play safe

Game is 8ball.
I am solids.

Here is the way I would play this.
I'm going to leave my 3 ball in front of the 8. This will make his out alot more difficult on the 8.
My shot would be to roll the 4 towards the 10. being on the rail using some inside english should let you roll the ball down the rail. Tying up his 10 would be the equalizer, but anything close by might work also.. I'm also going to play it like a scratch shot, so the cue ball goes at the 11 ball in front of the pocket. You could make his ball or tie it up. With the insurance policy 3ball which might help.
Best,
Ken

I like these threads.

I never know the answer-maybe there is not just one right answer. I especially like the responses to 8ball situations as I don't play it much.

We are lucky to have the insight of so many accomplished players on this site.

Re. this one-I like Judes suggestion best followed closely by Frank's 4 railer(just because the only thing better than a 3 railer is a 4 railer).

8ball makes my head hurt-so many choices-so many strategies-so much end game moving. Damn-that sounds like a really good game. But, I'll stick to rotation games where I just have to find the next ball.

Thanks everbody-great imagination and problem solving on display.

We need to keep an eye on Newstroke-that guy aint right-in a good way

Who am I playing? Since the three seems to block the corner pocket for the 8, I'd probably shoot the 4 and get it out in the open and let my opponent fire away.
