How'd This Happen?

the only natural 3 rail option on this shot is skimming it off the long rail, then down to the short rail, then all the way back up to the opposite short rail. no way does the natural angle bring the other long rail into play - unless you do something to the cue ball!

funny, i am 9 of 10 on this shot hitting it with draw, having missed the only one that counted i suppose. and if you thin the '8' Ball too thinly into the side pocket you could possibly have scratched down in the corner pocket.

Once again, according to the diagram that you have made, this is wrong. The way the 8 ball sits, there is a bit of play here with how thick or thin you hit the 8 ball. The correct amount of thinness, in this case, will absolutely allow you to take the path I described, without any horizontal plane spin. A very thin hit on the 8 will almost allow you to hold the aim line with the cueball, and can absolutely take the cue ball to the opposite long rail.

And again, in reference to your diagram, hitting the 8 ball too FULL would more likely lead to a scratch in the corner than too thin.

I have to agree with the poster just ahead of me. For someone who posts so much about missing and needing advice, you sure do know a whole lot don't you?

I enjoy shooting this whenever the opportunity presents itself:

i dont kno much but i kno beter to go with my first instinc and never over analyze ,3 rails first instinct ,or wow the crowd by middle of the cue ball on the left and 3 rails ...my 2 cents

I practiced this about 30 times today,( keep in mind i have a broken foot) and i did not have a problem doing it any way that was mentioned, including drawing it. I tried it 2 rails with left, 3 rails with follow, 3 rails with inside draw, 3 rails with outside draw, and 1 rail with side. I did not get get good position using 2 rails with left, and found it to be the most touchy way to play it.

3 rails with follow seemed to be the easiest way, but in a match I think it would depend on my mind set at the time.

On a loose table, i may draw it, but in your diagram i definately would not do it that way.

JMHO,
Rodney

CueTable Help

I have diagrammed your shot, with ghost balls from the cue ball to the eight, for a thin hit. Notice where the tangent line is. There is no chance of "skimming" the long rail on a thin hit. If you hit the fourth rail at "C", any residual or aquired english will check the cue balls speed.

To scratch in the corner on this shot, is not a thin cut. Maybe it would be about a 45 degree cut at most.

I find it perplexing that you would engage all of us in a lengthy discourse on this subject when you can admittedly execute this shot 90% of the time.

I'll tell you exactly what happened -> you failed to execute the shot properly. Period. ;)

How did this happen

He asked how it happened, then is telling us that we are all wrong when we tell him the easiest way to shoot it. I have seen this in a lot of his threads. So why in the heck are we even giving him the time of day?

If you wanted to learn from us you would listen to us. And by the way the diagrams of the 3 rail bank are perfect. He should have seen you all were right just by them great pictures.

Oh Well, I guess he will learn one day.
