last night I won all 3 games playing with my DZ as this was the first time using it for league play since I got it back. I figured I'd find out how everyone else did!

On Thursday, I gave 5 on 10 to a guy and beat him 10-8 playing horribly. On Sunday, I played another guy with the same spot and beat him 10-8 as well playing great. I think I went 4 or 5 games without making a single mistake. My Friday match called in sick.

Monday night APA.
Won 5-0 in 6 innings. First night shooting with my new Qb cue and God damn does this thing hit em sweet.
Best night of shooting in quite some time.

is this league play? I never heard of this kind of "spot" in league.

Yes. I play in a few BCA sanctioned in-house leagues at Amsterdam Billiards in New York City. I'm an A player on one night (Team 9-ball) and an A+ on another night (Individual 9-ball). The spots are always games on the wire. When I say "5 on 10", it simply means that my opponent gets a 5 game head-start in a race to 10. Several touring professionals play in the Team 9-ball league and thankfully, they spot me!

league...

Sunday night APA

I played a 7, I am a 4. I win the lag, I break, don't make a ball. He shoots a ball, makes it, then misses an easy shot. I get up there...run 7...including 2 very difficult shots...and hook myself on the 8. I had to turn loose the cue on the final ball to even have a chance at getting to the 8...and I was 1/2 inch off from having it straight in the side. Anyway, kicked at the 8, hit it...did not make it, and he runs out. I finally get a run of 5 balls a couple games later and win a game...now keep in mind all I have to do is win 1 more game. He leaves me runs three more times, four or five balls runs...and I can't get out. One time I even had the ball almost straight in and I missed it. I was just so tired and it was almost 11:30pm as it was the last match of the night. I hate playing late. He beats me 5-1. He was a strong shot, and relied on the run out as his defense...but he didn't miss many balls and broke out balls really well.

Oh well...always next week...and it keeps me from being a 5 anytime soon.

Jude,

What's the race when a D+ plays a B+? In my Thursday match I know I got 4 games and I think the race was to 8. If it was a race to 8, I got my ass kicked 8-6. I'm not doing too well in this 9-ball league . But dammit, I will improve!

My APA team is doing really good. It's my first season as captain and so far we have 19 out of 25 points. We won 5-0 on Sunday. Only bad part was that I got into a fight with our best player because he was being a drunken asshole. Now he wants to quit. Whatever, I'm tired of his prima donna antics.

interesting! I would be the one giving the spots if ours were like that. I play on a "warner" 8 ball valley league tuesdays and thursdays. if our league were handicapped, I'd most likely be an a+ player. in our league, the team gives the handicaps. ours is usually giving 7 which is the most.

handicapped straight pool league, me going to 85 and George Fels to 135, two matches.

I started out 26-1 after two racks, He then ran around 30 and maybe 35 or 40 a little later. Beat me about 135-50 something both games.

D+ to B+ is 4 on 9. Yeah, it takes some getting used to. This season and last have been good for me but that is not always the case. Last summer, I won 4 and lost something like 10. THEN, I go on to win a tri-state and my teammates start making fun of me. "You won more matches in one day then you could win for us in an entire season! What's wrong with you?"

Be serious but don't ever take league seriously (if that makes sense). Now, I just try to make a point of laughing at myself whenever things are going poorly. It's a good tension-release (like farting, only less rude).

Even better, 9-6! :D

I understand what you're saying. I was a little bummed after the loss, but I'm not letting it get me down. I'm going through a very similar experience right now that I had when I first joined the APA. I was probably the most horrible 3 (Men can't be SL2 in the NYC league) that ever played. After my first season, I was ready to quit. But I decided to laugh off that season and just focus on getting better. Now that I have 5 seasons under my belt, I've developed into a good 5 and I continue to improve. Hopefully history repeats itself with the BCA league. ;)

Well, I don't play in league, but I did play in the weekly 9ball tournament at Champions in Laurel last night. I got 3/4th. My first match was an older gentleman named Harold. I beat him 7-0. He says "you should be giving me the 8ball!" I said "But, I'm just a girl" and gave him the evil grin from hell. Then I played a local female up and comer, Cheryl. We stuggled through the first couple of racks, but at 2-2 I dug in and beat her 7-2. I then had to play TD Steve Flemming, and he beat me. But, only hill-hill. I am happy with how I played last night. Perhaps because I arrived quite early (an hour and a half or so before it began) and practiced, BY MY SELF!! I'm assuming Ryan McCreesh won the whole thing. He and Steve were starting the final as I was leaving.

Amanda :p

I got really lucky last night. I'm a 7 and was playing a 4 so the race was 5-2. I got to 3 before he won a game, although an earlier game where he almost ran the table after I came up dry on the break he missed the 8 twice! Then I dogged a couple of 8's and he was kind enough to give me another chance both times.

Last Sunday I played in an in-house league and scored 130 out of a possible 186 points, but my opponent was a pretty weak player.

league

tonight I won all 4 games with my DZ cue even though we only won 2 out of 4 rounds + total. we got 2 of 5 pretty much. how crappy is that. oh well...it's not my fault, I did my part.

We got a bye this week, but last week I had a 5-2 race and won 5-0. I usually play the top players on the other teams, but this teams highest rank was a 3 altough 1 or 2 of them shot at around a 4 or 5. It is very unusual here that a team does not have atleast a 5 or six ranker onboard, so I was somewhat suprised. On a bad night I could have run, and did something silly like scratching 2 games, resulting in a loss where My opponet did not even sink a money ball at all. Atleast with a player ranked high, I have a chance to get back in the game, and make a good comeback should that happen. Had to do that on many ocasions due to My sloppy play in the begining ,on a bad night. Still yet, It was a challenge, and We all gotta love that.

Sorry Shorty but your last comment has to be the single most thing wrong with leagues. You are happy you lost cause now your handicap won't go up. With that attitude, you won't ever be anything more than a 4...both in ability and luck factor of winning to move up. Leagues suck. Plain and simple. People remain a lifetime deuce and feel like they are the king cause they can compete against someone that actually puts in the time to get better. Good luck next week Shorty. Hopefully you won't nut up right before you have to get shapes on the 8....just like every other league player does.

On tuesday I won but did not play my best. I play APA 8ball on tuesday.
Its been hard really focusing after justarting a new job and the team just winning regionals.
I played a decent sll 6 with me being a sl7. I struggled a bit and he lucked in two balls in two seperate games to get 2 wins. He did take advantage of the good rolls which is what he is supposed to do. I was on the hill and shot a shot I know better than to shoot. I figured he needed 2 more and his balls were tough. I missed and he got another stroke of good fortune making the
next to last solid and accidentally getting shape on the last one. He took advantage again and he went hill-hill. He gets to the eight but did not play good shape for it and missed. I cleaned up for a win.
Last week I lost a match and it pissed me off a little. i play APA for fun so the matches are not life or death. I started out seeing if I could win the lag and run 7 racks. I ended up getting far out of my game and losing. No huge deal to me until after I thought about it. It was the first loss in a while. Close to 35+ in a row including playoffs and regionals.

Last week in 9ball I won 19-1 over a guy that did more talking than a
preacher at a revival. He then challenged me to play 8ball for $50!
I accepted and then thought the wiser. Not that I could not win but rather that it was not worth it. I think he was just talking and I stepped up and
accepted. We lowered the bet and then talked about it some more after I
saw it was still bothering him. Ended up going from $50 a rack to a beer a
game. no biggie. Better than having trouble. He was alright but quite a
talker.
Over the next few weeks I am going to try and settle in to some better practice and get ready for Vegas.

BTW-- Good going Mary and dont worry about going up and down in rating. It takes a few weeks to level out. After those two butt whooping in one night I dont think anyone had to mention anything to the LO. You probably shot 3 level. Keep it up.

Easy
I think even Shorty knows that it takes more than that one match to keep him from going up. It was a light joke.
Leagues are for fun. They dont suck and many forms have been around in different sports for a long long time. They do have negatives but each
individual gets out of them what they want to. For you it might not be the thing you are looking for. For me it is.
I enjoy going and playing pool with my friends. They dont take pool life and death serious and we have a good time. Theres not a good room close to me so i dont get to play more seriously as much as I like.
League is not meant to be my sole source of pool playing. However i can go and have fun and still get to shoot.
I know where a stand overall and am not delusional. I am a 7/9 in the APA
and am a "b+" player overall.

If leagues sucked then no one would be playing in any form of them. Thats not the case with all sorts of pool and non-pool leagues out there. They just are not for everyone.

I do understand your thought about the comment but I think Shorty was firing a joke.
Any good action going on around St. L these days. Tell Teacher that frankncali said hello.

We just finished our winter season (!!!). Finally...geez, it was getting old. We were supposed to be done about a month ago, but the scheduling was really screwed up this year.

It was a good week because I'm done playing for a while. I refused, when asked, to play in summer league. Burrrrnnnned out...

I had one of my best seasons, ever. I think it was for these reasons:

Drivermakers Holiday Open put me in the mood to improve.
Billy Bob's consistent efforts make a great example to follow.
AZ Billiards helping my knowledge and focus and motivation. TY all.
I had two Lasik surgeries (tho, having had 10 different eye corrections during the season made things interesting. These changes helped me to understand how the eyes do and don't affect my abilities and changed my choice of shots. btw I still need glasses and can't have anymore surgeries. :( I'm done with 6 years of experimenting with my eyes....finally.
I took a lesson from Scott Lee and he helped me produce a better stroke.
I played more and practiced more than I have before....thanks VA for harping on that.

Results, for anyone who cares:
Our team won both divisions in VNEA. We transformed a former APAer into a good player and he got 5th at state on his first try.
I played in two VNEA leagues and one BCA...the BCA has the best players: Jamie Fenton (3rd at Vegas Open), Don McCoy (went 28-0), Hendrickson (27-1), and more...I finished 7th in that league :) surprising myself.
I finished as MVP in each VNEA night with most 10-0's, most consecutive wins (19 & 12 respectively) and most ERO's, and 9+ averages in both. Then, at a local 8 ball tourney, I went for $0 in a calcutta---go figure.
I got second in the singles city tournament (got sharked by the league director, no less, on my last inning of the last game). :(
I finished 3rd at state.

It'll soon be time to get another lesson and start practing for the DM's Holiday Open and setting goals for next year.

Congrats Jeff
Maybe its time to do another Drivermaker Challenge. I need to bone up for
APA Vegas Nationals in August anyway.
If winter session is just now getting over whats next? Is it just like your seasons and you will have a one month summer session followed by a 2 week
fall and then the 6 month winter session. Spring session is skipped so that those 3 weeks you can BBQ j/k

Is your league on bar tables or big tables?
