Huge money at Pool event in Birmingham.

Where i come from the player always has the right to buy half himself. If he doesn't the buyer will often jelly him a little if he cashes but not the full amount if the guy had gone in half. A buddy of mine once bought a local guy for nxt to nothing. The dude did not buy half himself. He then plays out of his ass and beats Dick Lane and some other good players to get to the final. Ends up second and my buddy offered him a jelly. He thought he was due half and a fight damn near broke out. Some comical shit i tell ya.
I heard Buddy Hall would ask for 20% back in his day and say he would play his heart out. This is a fact..

No offense but you started out with "I heard" and ended with "this is a fact". The two don't always go together. I could tell more than a couple 'Calcutta fuckery' stories and some involved major stars at the time. IMO if the player makes zero attempt to buy half himself he gets what he gets and really shouldn't bitch regardless.

What about the people who disappear after they are auctioned off, then when the draw is final and they get a favorable outcome say "I looked for you everywhere, here is my half." God help you if you don't give them half, forfeit, or dump out on you.

One thing that happens around here is that the player says he wants half but doesn't pay it up front. Then he loses his first match and all of a sudden six or eight hundred for half doesn't look so good!

Sometimes there is a verbal commitment like this but the player has to grab some cash from a friend or an ATM to cover a higher bid than expected. Then one side or the other plays hide and seek to prevent a 50% buy in before the first match starts.

Sometimes a player is on a hot streak and really wants to buy himself. Then if he is outbid the relationship is sour from the jump.

A lot of how you feel about calcuttas depends on if you see them from primarily a buyers/gamblers standpoint or a players standpoint. I have never bought somebody else in a calcutta, pretty much tells all I that needs to be told.

You also thougt the rack mechanics could be pertinent - in full rack bumps. U were wrong, on normal Professional standard equipment - the top players break safe - Opening break. So yer proclamation about opponents ability to lay down bad rack in full rack Bumps - was and is Wrong. Save yer poor advice for another oblivious recipient. I.e. they still have to score the first bank off the end rail, not everything as crooked - as u would try and portray it sorority pooch. So yer definitely a sober cynic - a mis informed one at that. For future ref - if u try to give advice on this forum - make sure it's not full pretenses or hyperbole.
So a woman won $100k in a Full Rack Banks Event? ...well that certainly is news.

Our top TD doesn't allow play to start til all the financial stuff is locked down. The players have to decide and whip half the $ or suffer whatever happens as far as tips/jellies etc.

As i said before all the financial details are taken care of before a ball is hit. If the player doesn't come to his purchaser and buy half he's out. Whatever he may/may not get is anyone's guess at that point.

The tournaments that seem to have the calcutta problems are what I call regional sized tournaments. Maybe $40-$100 entry fees for the event and they will draw a few people from several states away, a few pro's too. A good many strangers in the pool hall and everybody doesn't know each other by sight. Makes things confusing and play typically starts 20-30 minutes after the last calcutta, maybe only five minutes or so if the calcutta is the only hold-up to play.

The Tournament Director often runs the calcutta so they may have to finish the brackets after the calcutta. Not unheard of for the "draw" to take place behind closed doors after the calcutta, an obvious bone of contention!

Anyway, other times a special auctioneer might be called in for the calcutta. These guys are a show themselves and get the calcutta purses up enough to justify paying them a flat fee or percentage of the calcutta total amount. In my state the money for the auctioneer can't come from the calcutta funds, neither can anything else. The calcutta purse is a separate fund only split by calcutta buyers. A calcutta purse may be several times the size of the tourney purse and often someone wants to use a piece of this pie. The state gambling commission takes an extremely dim view of this!

My Waco buddies bought Buddy in the 90" at Champs in Dallas. Across from CJ's future place. BTW Buddy won the event.!! Pick of the litter for $2400.
