Hurricane Sandy won't hold us northeast US pool players down!

Folks:

A friendly shout-out to all my northeast US pool nuts! My lady and I got back a little while ago, car full of supplies, and we're hunkering down. Firewood? Check -- two cords (and most of it hickory, no less!). Propane? Check -- two additional full tanks. Crockpotting some meals, and making sure all the storm doors and windows are all battened down.

To keep this pool-related, I'm clearing off (and cleaning/brushing) the pool table, as I suspect it's going to get some use -- more than it normally does, due to me actually *being here*. ;) But hey, there's some things I'd like to work on for my game, so I look at it as a bright side to Sandy. :thumbup:

I hope all my friends out there who are in the path of Sandy are well prepared and/or are on high ground. The storm surge she's bringing is supposed to break all kinds of records.

I'm sending out my good vibes and wishes to everyone. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones!

I'm working as late as I can tonight. We got a recorded phone call from PEPCO (electric company) stating that we should be prepared to lose power.

I was thinking about all those players down at the Open. I hope they get the hell out of there now. We were at the Open when Tropical Storm Isabel hit, and it wasn't pretty. When I got back home, we had lost power for 7 days and had to go to a motel. It was terrible.

I'm glad the Open was able to go forth before Hurricane Sandy.

We removed everything from the yard that could fly, and when I went to the grocery store for supplies, I had to stand in line to get a cart. They were all taken. I wanted to get food that we could eat without electricity. They ran out of bananas. I did got a big ice bag and put it in my freezer.

We're getting use to getting hit with these storms lately. Two earthquakes and now this. Sheesh!

Everything outside right now is eerily quiet. It's spooky. I know there's a storm coming when that happens.

They closed down all the schools tomorrow. It is rare that D.C. shuts down public schools, but they did it this time.

The last storm, the so-called "Derecho," it came suddenly, with no warning. This Hurricane Sandy, at least we had time to prepare for it.

It's looking pretty bad that Obama already signed a D.C. "disaster declaration." OMG! :eek:

Federal Government is closed too.
 
Sean , you'll like this. We tend to lose power where I'm at. I picked up a couple of battery operated LED lights and mounted them above the pool table just in case......I'm ready.:grin:
 
Gotta love that hickory, Sean. Musta burned a hundred full cord over the last 30 years or so. No more. When we bought this place it had a nice pellet stove and three tons of pellets waiting for us. Loads less work. At a tme like this, though, I really wish we had a wood stove. Pellets don't heat for shit without that auger and fan plugged into the outlet.

We live a stone's throw from where the most severe damage from Irene occurred, and about 5 minutes from where a major tornado touched down the following week, but we're high and dry, with full gutters draining all the water out into the field in back. Old place had a foot of ground water that seeped in after Irene, destroying part of my workshop. Nice and dry here no matter what.

Anyway, friends, stay dry, and if you can't, stay safe. This will be a big one, maybe the worst on record.

I can relate to what you are going thru right now. I rode a big Hurricane out in September this year. I wont try to ride another one out though.
I hope and wish you the best results in this storm for you and your family.

Yep, my main customers in the area already shot out "all hands" emails letting them know that the office facilities are closed tomorrow. All the schools here are closed as well.

I just got in from walking the doggies, and man, that sky looks ANGRY! Clouds bulging downwards out of the sky, and the wind is whipping up.

Thanks for the well-wishes, folks. We're going to need it...

We lost power here at the club that I belong to for a while last winter, and my buddy and I kept shooting, using the light from the emergency lights, and if necessary, my smartphone in flashlight mode to show the tougher shots...

Stuck in DC; first client cancelled tomorrow. Assume Tues/Wed client may cancel too. Interesed in shooting some maybe Tues night, hurricane permitting. Any good places near L'enfant plaza. Hope my hotel stands up to the beating. Stay safe.

Stay inside. The worst of it will be later today. We still got power, but they are warning everybody to not go outside when the storm begins, about 8 a.m. today through 8 a.m. tomorrow.

No pool halls downtown. You're closer to Virginia than anything in D.C. Virginia has a couple yup spots in Arlington, but you'd probably need a car, I think.
 
last year, I got double whammied by Irene's flooding (got stuck in nj for an extra 2 days trying to get back to CT) only to arrive home to no power for a week. Was real lucky to find a generator at a big box where fist fights almost broke out over the arrival of these precious gens.

I used mine for a few days and sold it at a real fair price on craigs list in about 2 seconds flat - felt good paying it forward.

then, less than a month later, a freak snowstorm put CT in turmoil with, you guessed it, wid spread power outages including me that lasted, in some cases, for weeks. Once again, amazingly, I found another generator and as soon as power came on, I sold it just like the one before, to a very grateful caller number one on my craigslist ad. :smile:

fast forward to now -

The CT Light & Power spokesman has said that they expect more than 70% of CT customers will lose power. That's impressive.

When all the problems happened last fall, I promised myself this was never gonna happen to me again - below you will see my solution. I found this trailer-mounted Army surplus onan diesel generator that will power my house and probably a few more houses in my neighborhood, as well. :cool:

I'm ready, Sandy; bring it on!

On a much more serious note, Sean, buddy, and all other az friends who may be in this storm's path, I also wish you well and please be safe. This storm is said to be the worst CT has *ever* seen, even topping the monster of 1938.

The news is acting like the worst storm of the century is coming. I look outside, and it's quiet and still, hardly raining. I don't get it.

They shut down everything, Federal Government, D.C. Government, all major public schools, no buses, no subway, no banks, no trash collection, nothing.

Maybe it hasn't hit yet. I'm not sure.
 
The grocery stores always enjoy storm season. I think they have a deal with the weather prognosticators.... :grin:

You should keep alert, Jen. The wind is really starting to whip-up up here in Carmel, NY (Putnam County, 90 minutes north of Manhattan), but that might be because one of Sandy's "arms" (the outstretched "fan blades") of the storm is about to hit up here.

I'm thinking you're just seeing the calm before the storm. When the wind picks up, believe me, it happens quickly.

Hi Brian!

Lisa and I are hunkered down, and like I mentioned to Jen, the wind is really starting to pick up up here. You're probably seeing it where you are, too.

That's some generator you have there! When this is all over, I'll have to upgrade to something like that, with perhaps a transfer switch.

Anyway, I'll try to check in from time to time, until I lose Internet access.
