any of you guys ever undergo hypnosis for your pool game? if so, what did you tell the hypnotist before hand? was it to give you more confidence, more of a killer instinct, to better your mental approach, to help you relax more?

and did it help?

I would just like to say this (pay close attention)
Your eyes are growing heavy, very heavy.
You hear only the sound of my voice.
Your eyes are growing more heavy.
Look into my eyes.
Listen to the sound of my voice.
You cannot keep your eyes open.
Sleep. sleep. sleeeeeeeep.
You are now a DUCK !
Whenever you hear the word 'rack',
You will waddle and quack.

RACK !

I happen to know one world champion who said it made all the difference for him. Changed his whole mindset.

I highly reccommend trying it out. I was hypnotised when I was younger and couldn't deal with pressure. I told the sports psychologist that I was having trouble with pressure and killer instinct. There weren't any quacks or barks thrown in, at least not that I know of. When I did it I was told to think of a word that would trigger the memories of what was said to me or a place on my hand to touch that did the same thing. It is pretty amazing how it works.

Good luck

I read a book on self-hypnosis one afternoon. I shot the lights out that evening. I definitely think there is something to it. Any time you can relax, clear your mind and focus on a tasks ahead, it is beneficial. Give it a try.

in the '70s, hypnosis and meditation etc. were all very much in vogue. my father had already just barely flunked the bar exam twice. he was not a test-taker at all, would get very very nervous.

he went to a popular hypnotist who was using a new rhyming method. the line was, "if you can drive a car, you can pass the bar."

my father flunked the bar the third time and from then on would start violently shaking whenever he tried to drive on the freeway. he was okay on streets, but couldn't drive on a freeway. all of my childhood he drove on streets only, and any family vacation had to be by airplane.

i wish i were joking about this.

also, i like my brain. i wouldn't trust anyone or anything (no drugs) with it, so why pay a total stranger (even if he's highly recommended) to go fiddling around up there?

What's the difference between self-hyposis and total focus/concentration?

One is passive and one is active.

Hypnosis controls your body as well as your mind. Slowing your breathing, feeling the energy move through your body. Relaxing every muscle. Clearing your mind and then making subliminal suggestions. I think self-hypnosis has similar qualities to meditation.

One can be angry, happy, tence, excited, hyper etc. and be in total focus.

They are very similar, but still different. Does this explain it very well?

For me, if I have said certain positive things to myself and walk into the pool hall believing those things, then I am confident that I will win. The result for me is total relaxation and very good focus.

Early on, by my second session in APA as an sl2, which i was for two sessions, found that I was playing in this relaxed concentrated state and was confused about how I got there. Why was I, a weak player like this, when so many around me who were much better nervous at the table and missing shots which were easy to their level of skill.

A certain person, who is no longer on this board helped me to figure out what I was doing, kind of by going backwards to figure what I was doing mentally before that happened. Tracing this backwards led me to self-hypnosis. It does seem to mean that if I prepare myself mentally before walking into the pool hall by self hypnosis and/or meditation then I play relaxed, confident and well focussed.

That does not mean I win, but that I believe that I will, and even when I lose the match have the satisfaction of knowing that I played my best.
