I am officially announcing I my canadacy to become a voting member on the BCA

MikeJanis said:
David the BCA is a NPO and everything is done by a vote (which includes who is on the board to who is the President of the BCA). Having someone on the inside like myself who of course would try to attain a board position would assist and provide input to what is voted on. Currently the BCA has a renewed interest in our sport. Right now it appears to be limited but things are not always what they seem. Thre are many within and outside of the BCA that want to just throw the lot of the board member out but that won't happen nor should it. Many of the BCA board members also have a vision and they have much needed experience and knowledge. Everything can be done through the proper channels and that is what I am hoping to influence with my vote.

I hope you will find a way to see past "what was" and look towards "what can be".

Thanks,

Mj
Mike, I do not claim to understand all of the issues the BCA has to deal with on a day-to-day basis, but your statement above concerns me. Not concerning you personnally, but you stated "Currently the BCA has a renewed interest in our sport. Right now it appears to be limited but things are not always what they seem.". If this particular organization is not interested in the sport what are they interested in? Is it just the sales of billiard related products?

I am just trying to understand what you're up against.

buzzsaw, the BCA has done a good job lately toward promoting our sport and bringing new members into their organization. They are also a very successfull organization with over 3mil in their coffers. Its not that they are "not interested" it's more like the direction they take toward doing it that needs refinement so it can better serve the growth of our sport.

My goal would be to offer sustainable avenues that would help the BCA achieve its current objectives while changing the direction of how they utilize their advertising dollars that are allocated to help support our sport.

Dang Bubba, thanks for your support. To say the least I am overwhelmed.

I received you donation. Thank you very much. I am soo surprised. Heck, you are the last person I expected to send dough. You are soo tight with money its amazes me. I remember the last time we had dinner and split the bill. The total was $62.03 You handed me $31.01 and wanted to play me a game of 1-hole for the odd Penney. When you opened your wallet everyone in the restaurant started sneezing from the dust that flew out of it. LOL

Anyway thanks alot for you vote of confidence and I appreciate you help with this endeavor.

PS.. Right now we are only purchasing a voting membership with the BCA. The board position if and when would happen later ;)

A question

What exactly does the BCA do?

I know of their leagues, and the vegas thing but as a player who shuns leagues and is only interested in matching up for cheddar and regional tournaments I have not run across anything BCA related. Is it more for league players and pros?

The BCA does tons. The BCA Pool League has nothing to do with the BCA. In the recent past the main focus of the BCA has been to run their Trade Show which is what generates the most revenue for them and to support their members. But the BCA offers much more to pool than just the trade show.

They have Instructor Programs, National Tournaments (EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championships which can be seen on ESPN.) They also produced? supported the BallBusters Program and much more. They support the Junior Programs by partial funding as I am sure they do several other programs.

The best thing to do to learn more about the BCA is to read over their website. http://home.bca-pool.com/

My honest answer to this question is YES. However, I am on a campaign to change that.

Right now on the top of my list is to hopefully get the BCA to restructure how they support pool tournaments.

2 years ago their perception of supporting pool tournament went like this.

from
http://www.bca.affiniscape.com/assoc...ual_report.pdf

"The professional events hosted by the BCA each reported losses. The August promotional ?Ballbusters? event showed a net loss of $245,915 and the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball tournament also showed a net loss of $112,921."

If the BCA is willing to invest this kind of money into a structured system that they used for just 2 events I am positive I could use the same amount of money they lost and turn it into a profit for them. I would use the same revenues to start a national system that would support, promote, sanction and generally oversee a system that would set benchmarks for players and events so the players can earn pro status and events would pay much better. I would implement this system at the bottom level using the existing regional tours and build an upward ladder to televised professional events.

Is this something you would support ?

Mike,

I completely agree with what your views in this situation. Perhaps we should try to make a change by getting the right people in there. You can count on my support 100%.

Thanks Blackjack. It is my hope that many others within the billiard community will become Voting members to. From this point on, I will also be talking with room owners and others in the pool community to try and get them to join as voting members as well. Together we can make a HUGE difference.

Um, ah, well, the check is in the mail!

BCA Voting Member - Update

BCA Voting Member - Update

Thank you to everyone that contributed and supported my goal to become a BCA voting member.

Today I became a voting member of the BCA. Additionally, I sent in my application to be considered as a candidate for a board of directors position directly to Rob Johnson the CEO of the BCA.

As you know, one of my main goals is to convince the BCA to provide monetary support for the organization of the sport of pool. Specifically by incorporating the existing Regional Tours into a comprehensive system that would provide a clear path for players to achieve a professional status along with creating a true organized professional tour here in the US.

On February 6Th, 2008 I have been invited to present my proposal to the current board of directors of the BCA in Phoenix, AZ at there Board of Directors meeting. At this time I will outline the specific path to achieve the stated goals to the board members. I will additionally show them how this will support our sport, the BCA members and increase long term revenues for the BCA in the hopes of gaining their support and their continued interest in realizing the full potential of an organized tour here in the US sanctioned by the BCA. My plan is based on a five year projection which would start off in a realistic manner with minimal funding then increase over the lifespan of the tour as revenues increase and are realized.

At this time I am asking for your continued support of the two stated goals.
1. To become a Board Member of the BCA
2. To gain the support of the BCA for the tour concept.

What I need you to do is talk to everyone about these efforts. Hit the streets, the pool rooms, pro-shops and talk to the owners and people within the Billiard Industry and specifically within the BCA. Anything you can do to help achieve these goals will greatly be appreciated by everyone in the pool world when our goals are achieved.

If you would like to make a contribution towards the goals you can send a monetary donation via paypal to email adress vikingtour2@yahoo.com.

The expenses for the travel to the board meeting, brochures and the BCA voting membership are approximately $2,000 total. So far I have received about $700 in contributions. Anything you can do to help out will be appreciated and matched by the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour to help further the goals.

In addition, if you are in the billiard industry and you are not a current member of the BCA I highly suggest that you become one today. You can sign-up at http://www.bca.affiniscape.com/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=9
If you are a current member please upgrade your membership to a Voting Membership so you can take part in shaping the future of our sport.

Thank you,

Mj
