I finally played Ultimate Pool

Not in a league, or even at an event, though. I was on vacation in Arizona and was able to setup a match with Drew Von Porte from YouTube.

I enjoyed the format way more than I thought I would. Love the shot clock, no race, match clock, all of it. I really enjoy 8 ball on a bar box, so that didn't hurt either.

Does anyone here play in a UPL league? What do you think of it compared to other leagues?

What do you think of the rule differences? Do all the UK rules bother you? Or did you encounter them?
I don't mind the rules for the most part. We didn't really run into anything different, though. No frozen balls or slopped in shots. He scratched on the break once and I was kind of looking forward to shooting backwards in the kitchen, but sadly there were no balls there, haha.

As for even the 8 being slop, I kind of understand it within the structure of a timed match with no set races. It gives the player chasing a chance to end the game and get to a new rack instead of the ahead player stalling with unnecessary safeties to kill the clock.

So, all in all, I really have no issues with the rules. As long as it applies to everyone equally, then there are no issues. It's easy to choose not to play if someone doesn't like them.

I have played in 3 sessions of Ultimate Pool and I prefer it over the VNEA leagues. The shot clock is the biggest reason for that. I normally play league in an area where 2 minutes a shot is more the norm. So now I drive almost 2 hrs to play in UPL.

I played in the one in Denver, got in the money, shoulda been deeper but I wasn't aware you could chit a ball in another pocket you weren't aiming at and keep shooting, had em down by two games/lost on the hill.
Then....
When you got on the video table pit, the rules changed, 8 on the break was a win. When Matlock did that, boy was he surprised.

They changed that now. 8oB doesn't even count in the shootout.

Absolutely. I'm a fast player by nature, but I think it made me play even faster without over thinking. I did miss 2 or 3 shots in the set that I don't feel I would have missed if I took an extra second (which I had plenty of time to do), but I was mostly happy with my play. Especially since he didn't even give me a chance to warm up!

There's no call-shot in UPL? 🤮

As easy as 8ball is on a barbox, they went and made it even easier. I guess it will attract more amateurs though, since they are more prone to slopping balls in and feeling happy about it.

It has attracted many big name pros, too. SVB, Sky, Tyler, Bergman, and of course all of the big UK names as well. Like I said above, slopping almost never comes into play. It's just another set of rules for another game on a pool table.

Has it attracted any Mosconi Cup players from Team Europe?

Playing in a league now. I am still not sure about it. I will say that I like watching the events. Not sure how much I like playing it compared to BCA. As to Bob’s question, I’ve tried to keep an open mind on the rules but I generally don’t like them. I don’t want my general dislike of some of the rules to affect my play. So you just have to accept them; they work ok, even if some of them are a rules nit’s dream.

Garbage. Slop counts and you don't have to call the 8 ball. That isn't pool, it's ultimate banger.

I always find it funny when sub 700 players (of which I am) try to show how cool they are by belittling other games with sayings anywhere along the lines of:

"Bar box pool?! That's the kiddie table!"

"Slop rules?!?! That's only for bangers!"

"Look at the buckets on that table. This isn't pool!"

"I only play X game on a 9 foot table like a real man! Look at me!"

It's an amateur pool league. You know, for amateurs. It's meant to draw people to the game to have fun. They run the tournaments to advertise for the league. Unless you are better than the pros listed above who all happen to love the format and rules, you just sound like you are trying to beat your chest with how much better you are than other amateurs.
