CueTable Help

I chose to do this kissed 8 and scratched. Should I have tried a 1 rail kick or, tried nudging 1 of his balls up against the 8.

Got yelled at for this one too.

The one rail kick would have brought you in at the 8 at a sharper angle and you would have had a lot less chance of scratching.

Black Cat: A one-rack kick here would have been a much higher percentage shot than the two-rail kick.

If your captain keeps yelling at you, perhaps you should consider joining another team. :)

I would have went with the one railer. The way I shoot this shot is to find the halfway point on the rail and then shoot firmly with topspin. It is very accurate.

a quick system for 1 rail kicks is as shown on the wei table where (a) is the contact point, (b) is the point opposite of the contact point and (c) is the aim point. Hit with center spin with about a 5-6 out of 10 speed.

Next time try this and you'll give your captian heart failure ( by the way this kick does work, its a Grady kick ) its a great kick - ive used it a few times when I was in jail. Depending on the table its center ball with a little right. Good luck START(

not sure if thats EXACTLY where the cue hits on the rails going to the 8 but you get the idea.

That one scares me what's the formula. I've been studying Banking with the Beard, & The Monks Banking and Kicking Systems Vol. 1 & 2. I've been doing pretty good with it coming along well I guess. But, the captain on my team tends to be very conservative, anytime I do something pushing the envelope he gets pissed.

Actually I would never shoot that kick for the shot you were going for ... greenman has the correct shot posted. I was just throwing out a kick for you to work on and try. Its great for rotation games

I'm actually familiar with that system I use it often. I got that one from Ray Martin's 99 critical shots in Pool. I'm an APA 6 tying to get better, all help is appreciated.

Practice the one rail kick. Hit it slow. Really slow. Most tables today will give approximately the "geometrically correct" angle in/angle out on a very slow shot, rolling cueball, no english.

Try it on different tables. You'll never pass on this shot again.

Got yelled at for this one too.

I hope you mean to say that your team captain vocally showed his disappointment. Or do you mean he sat there and berated you?

No he lambasted me pretty good. :(

I felt bad about it, but it was a hell of a kick. He thought I should have bumped the 2 by the 8 pushing the 8 off the pocket. Then making my opponent make the runout if they could.

If I were his captain, and he tried bumping the 2 into the 8 I would have lambasted him for trying such an inept move.

BC,
Too cool, you are a man after my own heart - going for the heroic shot every time (my excuse is I grew up in Arnold Palmer country - we go for everything, laying up is for wimps).

However, 1 rail is obviously a higher percentage shot than 2 rails. I doubt the risk of scratching is much different between the 1- and 2- rail kicks, but certainly not enough to warrant the 2-railer; it has a much lower chance of success. Just repeat after your coach, "one rail is better than two, one rail is better than two, etc."

As Satchel Paige said, "never run when you can walk, never walk when you can sit, never sit when you can lay down; and never look behind yourself, 'cause something might be gaining on you" (in your case it might be your coach with his meat cleaver).

From my point of view a captain should never yell at a team mate for thier shot selection. The shot you picked took some brass, that you scratched in the side showed that you were close.

I always trust my teammates shot selection(although I might ask them what they were thinking or trying to do), if I see something they should change or should work on, I mention it later. much later.

He needs to take a chill pill.

Fred actually it was the 4 not the 2, I forgot which one was on the rail. Any difference?

No difference. You'd be giving up ball in hand with two balls left on the table. You'd have to get extremely lucky, or execute extremely well to put the other player in any bad situation.

If extremely lucky or executing extremely well are what you need, you might as well kick one rail across. It's an easier shot that requires less extreme luck or extremely good execution compared to nudging the 4-ball into the 8-ball.

Black Cat: Life's too short not to be having fun. Your team captian's berating you has to be taking its toll on you...so I hope someone in this thread can suggest a way for you to respond back to your team captian.

Hopefully, you are learning from your mistakes so that the next time you're in a similar situation, you'll do better. :)

I agree with Fred, the close proximity of the balls along with a free ball in hand would ensure there would be little problems for your opponent if you tried the nudge.
