I have a feeling he means this

I know you're familiar with the movie but the meaning of the quote is clear.

That Bert is the larger loser becomes clear as the movie concludes. But at that point in the movie it is about Eddie's failings. Using it brings that baggage with it whether it's your intention of not.

Lou Figueroa

That's how Bert would think. Fast Eddie would think like me.

JoeyA, now held responsible for creating the "HATERS" of the pool world. I hope Shane will forgive me.

What has he got to look forward to. There is no professional pool players association. No structured organization that could provide him earnings through the years to come.

Should not these things had been thought about like when very young coming up in the game? I know I thought about them in the 14-16 range, and chose a different path in education/career etc...

Though never to late to choose a different path, it kinda seems he made his mind up what he wanted to be in life, no?

Certainly would not worry about no haters though. They are not worth one thought.

Perhaps, but given Sarah's death, Eddie is never a winner, even after defeating Fats the second time and in fact Eddie ends up in exile.

Later on in the movie Bert elaborates on his original comment and says, "This game isn't like football. Nobody pays you for yardage. When you hustle you keep score real simple. The end of the game you count up your money. That's how you find out who's best. That's the only way."

IOW, to say you are the best when you are beat by another is a loser's mentality.

Obviously, Shane is just venting a lil. The guy is way too focused on his goals to let some noise change things.

Oh, from the conversations i've had with him, it sounds like he is a real estate investor. Though im only an acquaintance of his, he sounds like he is doing well and happy.

At the end of the day, if life is good...what else really matters?

Well, Lou, that's where you and I differ, I guess. :grin-square:

Fast Eddie came back to the pool scene in "The Color of Money." In fact, the lure of the game brought him back to his passion, what he loved most.

Is he a loser because he doesn't have Bert's money? Is he a loser because he became a liquor salesman? Maybe in Bert's eyes. But he's a winner in my book because he stepped up to the plate and came out on top in Atlantic City. After all, money won is sweeter than money earned, so they say. :p

Me, I never quit my day job because I don't win in pool. That's what champions do, like Shane.

Ditto

Not sure who the haters are, but here in America, it's practically unanimous that Shane is our very best player.

His frustration is perfectly reasonable, however. His fellow American players have not followed his admirable lead, falling far short in their work ethic and shunning playing pool internationally. In a purely professional way, he probably feels a bit lonely and betrayed.

Pool in America is hurting and there is no end in sight. I think we've hit bottom in having five of the nine Mosconi qualifying events being bar table events. That certainly won't close the gap between American pros and other pro pool players.

Shane has had a poor start to 2015 on the tables, so he has a right to feel a little down, but he's still America's best, and he'll turn it around soon enough.

Im sure its extremely hard to keep ones head up when there are all kinds of wrong goings on around you. Luckily for Shane Im sure he has some financial support at least.

You are right here in the US pool keeps digressing with no end in sight.

Who the haters are? The haters are many and from many sides. Their existence normally wouldn't matter if.....we had organization and we don't.

To begin to fix American Pool we are going to have to have someway of coming together over something and that is going to take organization and everyone chipping in that gives a damn.

This way the haters can be put to rest. You will either be a part of the solution or we don't need to hear it.

The Power of Pool is in the People of Pool and in my opinion the Organization of The People of Pool into a cohesive, governed way of doing business that promotes Pool and the health of the sport from a grassroots perspective.

Figuring out how to best feed the growing plant is something that much argument will be had around, this is not Europe and we have our problems that we must figure out the answers to, even when those are brought up for discussion the volume of hate and me, me, me attitude many times silences any good before someone is brave enough to organize a rising tide. Shane is a bright spot in American Pool no doubt and were he to quit pool that would be a death nell for the game with a lot of people. Let us hope he gets over his frustration.

Never met the man, I'm just going by what I've seen and read.... I think SVB is too levelheaded to let all the crap flying around the internet really get to him.

Pretty sure he's just venting.

The old ABC Sports intro. Referred to the “Thrill Of Victory and the Agony of Defeat”. With rare exception, Shane shows grace and humility when dealing with victory and is a class act when dealing with defeat.

In dealing with others Shane generally seems to start from a default position of being respectful and continues to respect those that reciprocate in kind.

I am sure that it is frustrating to offer an opinion in passing that is jumped on and critiqued by those he may not even know and doubly so after a disappointing (by his world class standards) result and a long flight with the ensuing jet lag.

In post number 35 the inimitable JCIN offers a prescription to cure theses blahs that is right on. I would add to it......get a couple of good night’s sleep and wake up secure in the knowledge that there is no other player in the world that can be sure of beating you on any given day and be thankful for the one’s that do from time to time because that makes the thrill of victory all the better.

In the CoM Eddie came back to the pool scene as a stake horse, not a player. His motivation wasn't passion, it was seeing Vincent, super flake, his talent as a pool player and a flake, and the potential to win some money backing him.

Eddie is a loser because he didn't have the character to beat Fats the first time; abandoned Charlie, his road partner, in the hotel; got his thumbs broken because he lacked self-control; failed Sarah to the point she commits suicide; and then, after beating Fats the second match, finds himself exiled from big time pool because he partnered with Bert, devil incarnate.

Eddie did not come out on top in AC.

He only wins his tournament match with Vincent because Vincent dumps to him. Then Eddie forfeits out of the tournament. At the end they play a private match with the outcome unknown.

Haters, or whatever they might be called, are bothersome, and should not be entertained for any length of time. They come and they go.
As to his future, I think we all look at life differently. Some, a little more realistically than others, or a little more pragmatic, if you will.
If I had Shane's talent and abilities, doubtless I to would have given in to the siren song of being a star pool player. But, having said that, even if he is resourceful enough to provide for his later years, I believe there may simply not be enough monies available to him, in the pro ranks. :)

Thanks for sharing your opinion. My opinion differs from yours. I would elaborate and write my opinion, but I don't have time for these back-and-forths on something that realy doesn't matter in my life. I'm only posting on a pool forum, sharing my opinion. Thank you for sharing yours. :)

For Shane, arguably the #1 player in the World, to insinuate that he's done with pool - speaks volumes.... He is one of the cleanest people in pool. John Mars has always backed him.

This is all about the haters & the corruption.

What is the cleanest sport?

IOW, Eddie was the best player, not the best gambler. Eddie never realized the difference. And thus what made him a "loser" in the gambling world, but a winner based on his skills. If there was a sequel, I'm pretty sure Bert died alone and unhappy, like the ***** he was ;)

I'd rather be Eddie than Bert every day and twice on Sunday. I could learn how to gamble eventually, as for Bert, it's tough to learn how to be human

I sort of agree with you, Lou, except Eddie forfeited the match and refused his cut on the dump because he fell back in love with the game. I agree he's no hero...in fact in both the book and the totally different movie, he's basically an anti-hero. A character driven by his skill and desire to be the best, measured at first by money then by character. In both books he wins in the end by finding character, but having left his life in ruins (girlfriend's suicide, his being frozen out of the game in the Hustler; in the Color of Money, he has a divorce, loses his pool room and goes back to trying to relive his earlier glory). A classic phyyric victory, burning everything down in the chase of a sort of anti-climatic half win...

Why anybody that's famous does anything with social media confounds me. Screw it. It does nothing to benefit you and everything to enable clowns to take shots at you. No Facebook account, no Twitter account, no webpage none of that nonsense. Social Media, an invention that is, has been, and will always be entirely negative.

That is not true if you look at Shane's facebook page where he posted the statement about the haters he has like a 1000 positive responses from his fans with kind words of encouragement.

define "haters". (got a link to his FaceBook page of comments?)

no one here is addressing WHY he's considering getting out of pool.... the SD Kid just wants to play pool @ the highest shake, and deservedly so. this has nothing to do with some peions' comments. Shane was raised better than that.

the highlight of my 2nd Mosconi, was finally having the privilege of meeting Shane. i kicked off my heels & bolted across the casino outside to meetup with them (& KK9 who'd been drinking beers w/ them) for the SUN photos. he was humble. he was attentive. i was speechless. and he ensured that he got my son's name right for his birthday autograph, because he couldn't understand the speech difference between GREG, and GREY.

he's tired of something, and the lack of. and doesn't need to be.
