I have a streaming technical question - who can help

I have a question I would like to speak to someone about.

This is the info on what I use to stream and have a question on its capabilities or if someone has a better suggestion.

I need to stream two feeds at once -- I stream for my Golden Tee tour so I now currently stream the feed right from the game itself to show what is occurring on the machine. I also want to show another video shot using a camera to show the room itself. I want to do so without having to use another computer.

Anyone that can answer some questions and help??

HDMI camera. Thunderbolt black magic intensity extreme for the feed from the game itself.

I'm only on a single camera and a rank beginner so take with a grain of salt... I think to get multiple cameras you need a higher end black magic box where the input side is multiple hdmi and the output side is 1 thunderbolt cable.

Another way would be if you had an old Mac Pro to use 2 black magic cards in the expansion bays. 1 for each camera.

And another would be if you have one of the Macs that has 2 thunderbolt ports you can put a mini recorder in each thunderbolt port and an hdmi camera on each mini recorder.

I think then in either of these scenarios wire cast could see both cameras.

Again, I'm only on a single camera so what I said might be completely wrong.

Video has the biggest learning curve of anything I've tried! Yikes.

PS encoding and sending two separate livestreams is much more demanding (in terms of CPU and bandwidth) than broadcasting one live stream with two sources (ie Picture-in-picture).

Windows or Mac? Quad i7? Are you running desktop presenter on the same machine? Broadcast at 480,720 or 1080p?

@slomoholic,
You can go 65 feet with the right firewire cabling. Using firewire to thunderbolt adapter, I've been able to get two cameras running on a 2011 mac book pro.

MAC. 1080. One computer. Two feeds (one from the video game - one from the camera is what I want). Don't care if is two separate images or picture in picture effect. Two separate would probably be better visually

And ctyhntr -- you keep asking me all these questions on my setup.

Tell me what I need to setup for it to work and I'll do it. My current setup shouldn't matter.

I have no doubt that a MBP can handle two cameras. What I'm saying is that simultaneously encoding and transmitting two separate 720p streams at decent quality would require at least 4Mbps constant upload speed and would likely keep CPU usage at >75% for the duration of the streams.

However, if watchez is happy with PIP, then there should be no problem with bandwidth or CPU.

If the Thunderbolt bus can't handle two full 1080p video feeds, an alternative would be to use one Thunderbolt Blackmagic and one USB3.0 BlackMagic. Without knowing watchez' broadcast requirements, onsite Internet speed, and level of experience with various encoding/broadcasting software, it's hard to make a specific recommendation. That's why I'd recommend a phone call to either me or ctyhntr. It will go a lot faster than forum posts...

Anyway, although I run a Windows machine, I'd be happy to help with any setup questions relating to cameras, encoding software, etc.

(And that goes for anybody who might need some help.)

Blake - thanks for the offer. I would like to call you tomorrow after 5 pm cst. Can you PM me your number?

Most people can't afford to start from scratch and throw away $2K-$5K of existing equipment. Since your current setup doesn't matter, then get one of turnkey systems. They should be robust and flexible to handle your needs.

A friend complained he had to buy a new apple laptop, because his existing computers were too slow for his needs; photoshop and video rendering. I took a quick look, I realized he never upgraded the RAM memory on any of his Mac Book Pros. For $80-$150 per machine, I helped him upgrade his computers to 8GB and 16GB, saving potentially thousands.

Good luck with your streaming.

I have a top of the line MAC with plenty of RAM. The turn keys look great but still don't tell me how to get two streams to work in conjunction with each other.

Wachez

You have the following options:

1. If your Mac has 2 Thunderbolt ports (not all of them do), simply get two of these. They are about $140 each:

http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-De...375104&sr=8-2&keywords=decklink+mini+recorder

2. If your Mac does NOT have 2 Thunderbolt ports, get a used Intel Mac Pro off of ebay that has PCI slots. Any of them should work, as long as its quad core or better (I belive they all were).
Then, get 2 of these capture cards, also about $140 each:
http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-De...375104&sr=8-1&keywords=decklink+mini+recorder

3. The 3rd option is to use 1 Thunderbolt port, and a capture card that has mulitple inputs. I'm not familiar with those Blackmagic options, except that i think they start at about $1000, and may or may not need additonal hardware.

In all cases, Wirecast will see all the feeds and from that point you can do picture in picture, split screen, whatever you want.

Notes:
1. From perusing the Blackmagic user support forums over the past 2 years, USB 3 capture cards and Macs do NOT mix well, or even at all. I don't know if that is resolved yet.

2. My setup is 1 camera into my MacBook Air using the first option above. So I don't have first hand experience with multiple cameras. And btw, the Air does not have the horsepower needed. I drop frames all the time. I'm upgrading my machine to a quad core iMac I just got off ebay for 490 that will work better. (But it only has 1 thunderbolt so still only 1 camera)

3. In all cases, the HDMI input will need to be NON-Copy protected. For example you can't hook up a DVD player with an HDMI cable. It won't get the signal. This has to do with the HDMI technology itslef, not the Blackmagic caputre cards.

I hope this was somewhat helpful. I spent a solid year figureing out this stuff for myself. Could not get help anywhere.

Just wondering if anyone here has used Livestream's basic subscription level and if they had any issues with them? I like their pricing plan a lot more than UStream's, especially when it comes to the limit of viewer-hours.

Also - has anyone used any other CDNs? Showcaster, StreamU, etc?
