VAP, I understand completely. While I'll still play 9-Ball, my preference is 1st, Bank Pool, and 2nd, one pocket! I'd rather play one set of Bank Pool than play 9-Ball all day!

Wish I could claim that I'M too young for this to happen to, but I guess my claim of youth is long gone! :(

BTW, Master 1hole or Banks and you'll have most 9-ball players (at least those that don't play 1pocket or bank pool) by the balls!

Later,
Bob <<<< just played 5 straight hours of short rack banks and loved every minute of it!

One pocket is one cool game, and there's really no other for the kinds of shots that are called for in the game. Who, in his right mind, in a game of 9 ball, or 8 ball, or straight pool, would try one of those lazy, reasonably gentle 3 rail banks, if not to make the ball, just to get it close to the hole? Nobody, that's who... One pocket players need to know all the moves....

a good buddy of mine informed me that extensive one hole play can start to deteriorate your overall stroke and weaken your 9-ball game. I agree with this since a lot of the money players who play extrodinary 1 hole won't play big $$ in a set of 9ball, with the exception of say, Reyes or Deuel.

Everytime I try to play one hole it messes my game up bad.The only thing I see that its good for a nine ball player is to learn safetys other than hooking the ball.Other than that I dont care for it.Plus it takes too long to win the cash.LOL

U can add few more names to the list: Shanon Daulton,Jeremy Jones who won USOpen in One pocket, Gabe Owens, Leil Gay who won US Open one pocket and can play good 9 Ball in big boys league.Cliff Joyner still has excelent stroke for 9 Ball.

People have trouble staying in stroke playing one pocket because it's tough to develop a rythm.

It'll also hide a bad stroke or weakening game...that's why geezers seem to gravitate toward it. I'm not saying you can get away being a hack, you still have to shoot pretty damn good for top level one pocket...but it requires more thinking, knowledge, guile, planning, etc. that will end up blowing away a pure shooter with no idea of how the game is played along with all of the tricks and moves. VAP, are you smart enough for one-pocket? :p :D
(I must not be a geezer yet...never got into it)

My .02 cents ..

What players get hooked on with 1 pocket, is the
psychology of the game involved. Once you get into
it, it becomes much more exciting mentally than on
first observation of the game.

Just like people will put down bridge or chess, they
have not given them a fair chance learning the depth
of knowledge it takes to play them well.

A tough 1 pocket game does take patience though,
and sometimes players are not just in a patient mood.

It's the game I've been working on my son with.

With all the banks and angles, for an 11 year old....I think he's doing pretty good :)

Yeah..I got hit with that bugg as well. My buddy then gave me about 30 one pocket matches on tape....and it's gotten much worse.

i disagree totally.........there are WAY WAY too many good players who play both.

I don't think your right on there, Sharkeyes. The players than can play one hole prefer to play it because they feel it is the best game when the money is up. All pool games have luck involved, but the luck in nine ball seems to be greater than one hole. Another reason to play one hole over 9 ball when your money is posted is that you will probably have several chances/ innings playing one hole. 9 ball, there is no guarantee you will get to the table at all.

You should try betting more...

The trick to avoiding the nip-and-tuck stroke is to shoot each shot with a purpose, not just to bump into a ball.

Thank you. Then it stops becoming a nip and tuck, and seems (in your own mind) as important as pocketing a ball. Positioning the object ball and cue ball in the ideal place becomes an art form in itself and achieving success with your intended shot is equally as fulfilling as firing balls in the hole. The first time I got into a "moving" game and was extremely successful I got HOOKED on the game. After a guy (who plays one pocket ALL of the time but I'm a better offensive shooter than him) asked me to play last week some cheap one pocket I said ok. He wanted to play $5 a game so I did and beat him 4 consecutive games (just moving great..no mistakes and pocketing every bank and shot I went for). He told me I was playing too hard for $5 and jacked it up to $10. I then beat him two in a row and he quit saying, "I can't beat you." This was my first real "Success" at one pocket. I mean, I would give the guy the 7 at 9 ball comfortably...but at One Pocket I thought I would be donating him some free table time money. I started learning little things as I was going about protecting your lead, protecting the balls near your hole...and it was a blast. I guess I'll quit rambling now.

I didn't think you were...but then again...neither am I. Let's just play 9-ball until we get the hang of it and you give me the 7 and out. :D
