I Just Cant Play

Zerostroke,
While at DCC ('06) I watched the straight pool high run competition for several hours. Allen Hopkins was starting his attempts by placing his break ball in the jaws of the sided pocket, then trying to make whitey hit the very top of the rack. On his second attempt, HE JAWED THE OBJECT BALL IN THE SIDE POCKET!!! Perhaps you are being too hard on yourself - at least you made the ball in the side.

Thanks-i think its actually what keeps me going that i am just so bad it's unbelievable. I keep thinking that to be this bad there has to be some fundamental flaw and as soon as i find what it is (hey it's only been 16 years), i am gonna be a genius at the table.Still searching.

Hey Willie,
might take you up on your offer. i am sending you a private message.

DCP,
Some of the drills are tough, but they are still easier than trekking in Antarctica (which I guess was the Chef's recommendation for you).

Remember though, you are what you are, and the drills don't lie.

I'm right there with ya. I've been playing for 3 or 4 years. I play several times a week & just got my own table, so I'm practicing even more. I really enjoy playing straight pool - my high run is 15. If I set up a break shot, I usually run about 8 and manage to stuff myself. Its totally frustrating to me - particuarly, when every other sport I've ever tried in my life has come pretty easy to me. I love the challenge, but am very frustrated by pool ... I think I started too late in life (I'm 41 now - eyes aren't what they used to be ...)

In our local 9 ball league, the persont that won the final event and the grand finales is 67 years old and I haven't heard him complain yet. These tournaments start at 12 noon, and finish around midnight. So, I'm not making any excuses until I reach 68 :)

Man, we are SO alike that it's scary. That's my exact regimen at the Chinese Buffet.
Doug

SB,
Yes, the end result of each regimen is sure to be a "stroke."

Oh well, as I always say, that kind of overindulgence may cut a few years off your life.....but those years are at the end of your life and they're pretty crappy anyway...so have another Krispy Creme.

Careful DCP here is one of Willie’s drills for memorizing the numbers on the balls. I’m sure his others are on par with this.

You need to do something, and hopefully bowling is the key... I don't know why I clicked on this thread already knowing its content, but man... either sack up and work on it to get better and quit whining here about how you just can't succeed, or stay away from a computer.

It's always the same story with you.. I can't do it, why am I so horrible, my life sucks, my game sucks, etc.... How old are you again?
I have to agree here.

Whining to us about your game is not gonna fix whatever is wrong with it. Clearly from what you said you have a better game then me, but you dont see me whining about that either. Im trying to learn and progress anyway I can. Complaining on a forum is not gonna help you make those shots you miss or get shape on the next ball at all. Time spent typing that post and reading this whole thread could be time spent practicing or looking for an instructor to help you out. I beleive you had a thread similar to this in the past and a lot of members told you to get with an instructor.

This is something I still have yet to do (get with an instructor). But I'm not complaining about my game on a forum either.

breakup,
Speaking of drills, perhaps Guido's brother Dominick can introduce you to his favorite drill. You'll feel like Dustin Hoffman in "Marathon Man."

P.S. - You're just jealous because I can read. Don't worry though, I've heard that you can get your grade school equivalency diploma on-line. I hope you will consider it - lazy, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

After a stunning retort like that all I can say is:

I’m rubber you’re glue.

I don't know about that Willie. The first two of those last three things helped me graduate Phi Beta Kappa in Political Science.:)

I wish you two would just get married already!!
Good grief, can't you tell that you guys are in love?
Stop punishing yourselves and just be happy.

i am worthless.

i get fooled on shots as to where the cue ball is going, i miss shots i have practiced 10,000 times, i fail to run racks that are just about a cosmo, my speed is off, i have no confidence, i ask myself out loud why the balls did what they did when i know it was me that screwed things up, i blame shots not going in on the side pockets (might be some truth to this), and just am generally not a very good player.

that is the way things usually go. at times i have a good night, and run several racks, and think there is hope for me.

i wish i knew what to do to get better..........

DCP

Maybe there are reasons that can be worked out DCP.

For sure this rang true with me, an old pole vaulter with lots of 'experience' (and the scars to prove it) who for a long spell aborted more run-ups than should be reasonably allowed.
