What is it?
I turned on the set earlier today to come face to face with someone racking the balls on ESPN.
What HO! My lucky day. Ran, grabbed a beer and flopped down to watch and what to my wondering eyes should appear but?..SPEED POOL!
It it just me or is this some of the most contrived crap ever. The sport of billiards is only one power lunch and cheap sponsorship away from?
?FULL CONTACT NINE BALL?!
I am all for ?sweatin? a match? but not because you have been racing around a table like a fool firing balls in like a madman.
Now I?m sure that there is some level of skill involved here but to what purpose? If someone gets this ?sport? please do your best to enlighten me.
By the way, Rodney Morris gets my vote if ?Full Contact? ever comes to fruition.:)

Speed pool isn't pool. I just don't understand how they think they can pass it off as such. Contrived tripe it is.

Speed pool is about as exciting as curling. Maybe even less so.:D

Also, if you don't know what curling is - PLEASE DON'T ASK.
 
Most of you that hate it don't realize that it is extremely difficult.

When I do fund-raisers I shoot speed pool style trying to run as many balls as possible to raise money - it's not easy - anybody out there thinks that it is, put your money where you mouth is - and let's go.

Seriously... any of you... the challenge is out there. 24 hours straight - let's see how stupid it is an how little talent it takes... let's see who drops out first (from exhaustion).

I'm not a young kid.

I'm not skinny.

But in speed pool, I can go. Anyone that has recently seen me go at my top SPEED will tell you to stay away from this one.

Quit knocking something that you know you can't (or won't) do yourself.

IMO, Ya'll sound like the group of ugly girls bytching at a slumber party on prom night.

Normally I enjoy your posts but this one is way out of line.

Some of us have tried it and still think it is stupid. That is not a reason for you to talk **** to us because you like it and we don't. I agree that it is difficult but it is also boring and pointless. I have never met anyone that enjoys watching it or playing it. Anyone could take a "performance enhancer" and play for 24 hours straight or longer, I have seen it done tons of times.

I read your post 3 times and can't seem to view it any other way than an insult to any of us that think speed pool is dumb. Don't really understand why you went off like that but whatever makes you happy I guess

I don't think they are necessarly knocking that it takes skill.. I think they are just describing it for what it is ,a "gaffe"

I'm sure that it's very hard and takes a lot of endurance, and, by the way, I did support the last fund raiser you did for that young man.....but sorry Dave, I still don't enjoy watching it, or playing that way.

Glad you noticed.

FWIW, stuff likes this gets attention. Speed pool & trick shots - catch the eyes of people who don't normally watch pool. It adds excitement to a game that many in this world believe is played best in a tavern after too many beers.

Stuff like this will grab their attention and it is a platform for presenting our game - more so than 9 ball or 10 ball, or even one pocket and straight pool. You can put all of the top players in the world in the same room playing against each other - then you can put Tommy Kennedy alone at a table juggling the pool balls with a smile on his face - who are the masses going to watch?

That was the spirit of my post - and yes, I believe in that format I am one of the best in the world. Silly or not, it takes a lot of skill and a lot of work to achieve the level of play that you will see on TV. I think knocking it or saying its silly is a slap in the face to me and others that work hard to promote it. I apologize if my response to being offended actually offended the original offenders.
 
I will say this about my experience trying speed pool...

It was extremely difficult for me to keep decent mechanics while running around the table like a chicken with my head cut off. So I do not doubt that it takes alot of practice to be good at it. That being said I will never be playing or watching it again, it just isn't for me

I agree with most of what has been said in this thread. It should be obvious to anyone that plays this game, that something as difficult as Pocket Billiards would only be harder if played while running..... I myself hold the opinion that one should only run if being chased!
I know some people like it and it has gained in popularity the last few years But I still think its about the most ridiculous thing on TV. There is really NOTHING to be learned by watching IMO. AT least with 9ball(which i dont really like anymore) if you spend your time watching a match SOMETHING can and should be learned. Even Artistic Pool can show the benefit of developing a powerful stroke. Speed Pool, on the other hand is really the antitheses of what GOOD pool should be IMHO

Youngster, you don't know much. I used to take speed and I could break the 4 minute mile, running around the table and firing the balls in.

Now, when I take a 'performance enhancer', I can rock 8,000 times in my recliner-rocker and eat 12 bags of Fritos.

I quite enjoy watching speed pool. It is someting a little different that takes a lot of talent. I don't play it, because I do not think it would help my stroke at all, but to see the better players do it is fun. Just going up and firing away has a certain aura to it.
