I see alot of cues and cases that I'd love to have, like "flyingsnail"'s "ron thomas" case for $185...And its not that I doubt him about it, I'm sure it is, but how can you guys tell something REALLY is what you're told it IS without having first-hand knowledge of the item? I know some cuemakers have signature traits and all, but I guess I just don't understand WHY guys don't sign their work? If you buy something to keep it and you get it from the maker, then you KNOW what it is...But for someone like me that don't get around too much to just buy something without knowing what it is for sure, thats kinda hard to do. I just don't know what to look for on certain things, but love to have quality items...But having no proof of what something is is really hard. Am I the only one here? C'mon, I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one...
 
i don't understand, are you questioning the value of the used ron thomas case that flying snail is selling? or are you asking yourself if you should spend the extra money to buy one new directly from ron thomas? or are you questioning the quality of ron thomas' work?

I think he wants to know how you guys know which stuffs are authentic when the maker doesn't put any markers on it.
 
When you catch the bug of collecting or start knowing what you want you spend alot of time searching talking especialy to old pool players that are collecters also. you will never stop learning If there is something you want.

As for flying snail I have known him for 10 years now And i never see him sell any fakes. He is real picky on what he buys.

Also...he uses wood at the ends of his cases...whereas, the Engles cases used a folded and glued leather technique similar to that of the Fellinis and Centennials on the ends.

I just bought a Thomas case with the name under the lid. The case in question has no name. Was there a time when Mr. Thomas did not sign the lid?
I too questioned the case but from what I'm reading here I may not have the right. Care to share some of your wisdom?

you can use a escro servicelike scott at proeficantbilliards or you can call somone like me , or dick at billiard cue,matt at cueaddicts,jamie at new to you cues,or troy at on the hill . we will all give you great info and help you find the real deal . reputation is very important and these guys are great and honest!

once you have seen/handled enough of ?whatever? you eventually will learn to distinquish between them. we've had a lot of ron's cases and this certainly is one. no signature needed.

If I questioned the authenticity of an item, ie. the Ron Thomas case, I would just call Ron and ask him. He's a GREAT guy and very easy to talk to.

No Guy, let me clarify my question here for you guys. I was in no way doubting Snail, I'm sure he has a great rep which is why I bought the "no latch" case from him last night...I just want to clarify that I'm sure he speaks the truth. I questioned plainly that unless you have first-hand knowledge of something unmarked, or know that particular items' key traits, how can anyone like me, who is not familiar with alot of items, KNOW that something is really what it's said to be? I mean, EVERYONE makes a mistake now and then...You gotta admit that. I personally can identify a DZ cue like nobody out there cause I'm familiar with the work, but they're all marked so there's no need. I'm just debating with myself whether to buy other items that are unmarked also. I guess I need to do more homework before commiting, thats all. Thanks for the info guys, but I was sure I had nothing to worry about with "snail"...There was no question there, especially after talking to him on the phone
