I just made this "Efren" shot

So I'm playing a friendly game of 9-ball with my son and he leaves me hooked behind the 8. So I tell him... "Watch this, I'll masse around the 8 into the rail, make the six and send the cue ball around the 7 for position." And wouldn't you know it! I think we were both amazed. It's cool when you call an amazing shot and then actually make it. :-)

Great shot and you should be congratulated for spending time with your son. Not all pool players can say the same.
 
Great Shot! and look here, I was playing this dude tonight 8 ball, and this is the Shot he made to beat me.. I played safe off the 5, I figured Id lay up and hopefuly get into position to run out, what the heck ever, this dude kicks, hits the point, pockets the ball and gets shape on the 8. NO BS. This guy cant play a lick, I was assured my night would be awful and it was, just a small tourney, no big deal, I wasnt feeling well anyhow, and I didnt take this guy serious at all.. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE lol...

was it a full moon tonight?

Ok nice lucky shot by him I guess. But I am confused, if he can't play a lick, why does he only have one ball plus the eight while you have all those balls at the table? ;)

Yeah, well, He doesnt play all that bad I suppose.. I think I might have been just a bit irritated, all I heard was did you see that shot?

Normaly I would have just went for the run, but I wasnt feeling all that great so I played safe, I expected him to likely contact the ball, but make it and get perfect shape to boot? Nah... I quess I was looking for an easy out.. I got out easy ok!...lol This guy, I had the feeling he has been watching me play all week, he is a new face in the hall, and to be honest I had watched him play and wasnt really prepared for a match, luck or not I overlooked this guy and ended up loosing in dramatic fashion, lesson learned.


Now enough about me, that Efren Shot was awsome, the speed was cridical, and you pulled it off, This would be a great shot to practice, you get these kind of curve shots all the time, and could really make a differance in a match.. Most people Dont go for even the simplest curves at times and end up loosing. I like these "winning Shots" and for that your getting some green.

I like to get my kids involved without "forcing" it on them and so far all FIVE of my boys like to play. :-) (19,13,13,11,7)

I understand your situation. I have nights where my confidence is low and I think I would have done the same thing. It's hard to "go for it" when you are unsure of your stoke, etc. For me, I think it is a matter of getting out there and playing competitively more often. I practice at home a lot, but don't get out much.

Vinnie, nice shot, about a month ago just before I went to brasil, got sick and forgot how to play I made my first Efren shot and I've been playing alot of years. Not as good as yours but:

i was on the hill for $50 broke the balls and was 7/8 behind a ball that was about 16" infront of the cueball, I dont masse' real good but didnt have a kick avaliable and didnt want to push., i was playing good so I thought why not, masse' and hit it? I jacked up a little over 45 degrees hit the CB it curved around the blocker, now here is the cool part it was a pretty steep curve, the english grabbed right after the 16" so it looked cool( kinda of a "J" shape), but it got better I hit the 2 the OB square in the face, it was 4 feet from the pocket it went in, the CB stopped dead when it hit it-with speed, I never saw in my life this happen, me or anyone shoot a Masse' stop shot. the spin on it caused the CB to stop dead (didnt move a millimeter) when it hit-the ob hit the back of the pocket on a Diamond pro cut. 9', usually the side spin on the CB causes it to roll off etc. I stuck it there much to my suprise, I acted like it was suppost to happen and ran out the set. I lost the next set and went home I was tired but what a shot. yours was better but its cool to pull a shot off, i just wish I had been playing it.

besides the fact it went in it just looked cool to see the cb stop, running out the rack for the set was even better.

I once tried a very sharp masse, sort of a "V-turn", for fun. The cue ball had to come almost straight back to its original position to make a hit.
I punched through the ball from almost perfectly vertical, it went out about 2-3 feet and just stopped dead. Didn't backspin, didn't move to the side, didn't roll forward. It's like it hit a sticky wall. Pretty funny to see. Was worth giving up bih.

Way nice shot vinnie... taking rail first makes the shot extra tough. Good show lad!

I used to practice a shot like this a lot... now I can hit it 3 out of 5... still not an easy shot though.

More than likely the reason your hit went out a foot or so, and then stopped dead... the hit was too hard, or the hit was too close to the center of the ball, and kind of squeezed the ball more than it put english (reverse spin) on the ball... both will have the same effect.
But what do I know?

thyme, that's the shot pretty much. And yeah, I think it was too little speed, but too much center could also do it. I just skimmed the edge of the ball so it only had enough spin to cancel the outward movement.
