I LOVE My new X-Breaker!!! (review)

Well, I've had my new X Breaker break cue for about 2 weeks now, and I feel I must post my review.
First of all, let me just say that Richard was a great pleasure to deal with. I highly respect his attitude-he is a scientist, and experimenter, and has an open mind. I can't stand those holier-than-thou cue makers who think they have all the anwers and if you question anything they do they expose their insecurities and get all upset. Richard is exactly the opposite. I would confidently buy another product from him in a heartbeat.
Another very important thing to note is the partnership with Samsara cues. Maybe I am a little biased here, but I think Samsara makes a fantastic cue. I have played with one for about 8 years, and just got a new one from them about a month ago (which I LOVE). Absolutely top quality workmanship.

Look at this:

So about the X-Breaker:

Build quality/workmanship: 9.5 out of 10. The only reason I can't give 10 out of 10 is because I haven't seen everything, and I know there are cues out there with more complex designs that are also done very well. The finish is excellent. Almost looks invisible, like it is just a nice glossy piece of wood. All joints are perfect, fit tight. This cue is the most solid hitting cue I have ever felt. It really feels like one piece. I know a lot of people say that, but I mean it literally feels like it is one solid thing. I really like the white phenolic pieces. The wood is unbelievable. Tons of grain. Very striking-just what I wanted.

Joint: 10 out of 10. This is one of the best joints I've ever seen. It is a 5/16 14 piloted joint. The face of the piloted part is flat. This touches up against the wood on the butt end. When you tighten it that last little bit, you feel the slight compression of the piloted part pressing up against the wood on the face of the butt joint. It reallys gives an incredibly solid, one piece feel. Also, this joint has the least flex of any I've tried.

Shaft: 8 out of 10. This rating deserves an *, because I personally find a thin shaft more comfortable. My tastes are changing however, and perhaps tomorrow this would get a 9 out of 10. Seriously. The shaft is VERY fat (must be almost 14 mm). It is sort of a straight taper. the overall feel is extremely rigid. I'm sure this adds to the cues feeling of solidness and power. The other reason I didn't give a 10 rating is because of the weight of the shaft. The shaft is very heavy (4.75 oz.). This creates a very front heavy cue, because the whole thing only weighs 17.8 oz. Again, as I hit this cue more and more, I am starting to like this feeling, so this rating will change I'm sure.

Tip: 10 out of 10. This is the defining feature of the X-Breaker--the Xtreme tip. This is some kind of material that looks almost translucent. It looks a little like phenolic, maybe most like G10 epoxy, but it is not either of these. It is supposedly way harder than phenolic. I have no reason to doubt this, because I feel like this cue adds a LOT of speed to my break. Keep in mind I have hit my other phenolic tip break cue on radar at 26 mph. I swear this hits the ball harder. What is really amazing is that even when you absolutely crush the rack, the cueball behaves nicely. it doesn't really want to jump, and spins very little. I have a high percentage of breaks that I hit at max power in which the cue ball just sticks in place in the center of the table. It is really uncanny, because this is without question the most amazing jump cue I have ever used. I can clear a full ball with a full cue from about 8 inches fairly easily. If you can back off to about 90% power, the control is unreal. I still have to try this out on a bar box, but I've tried it extensively on 8' and 9' tables, and it performs VERY well. One strange thing is that the end of the tip is concave. It looks like there is a little dimple in the center of the tip. I'm not sure if this is a manufacturing thing or part of the design. Either way, it sure works well!!

Overall quality: 9.5 out of 10. I think this is a superb cue. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who likes cues, and particularly to anyone really interested in the break. It is really beautiful. The finish is excellent, the materials and workmanship are excellent. Also, compared to what is out there, this seems like a very good value for what you get.

Overall performance: 9.5 out of 10. For anyone "into" the break, this cue is really a must have. One thing I didn't mention so far is that aside from all of the "technology" and talk about how solid the cue feels and how hard it hits the ball, the most important fact is that it MAKES BALLS!! For some reason, even when I hit the rack bad, I just make more balls on the break with this cue. This cue would be ideal for the person who wants a little more power in their break, or the person who breaks hard but lacks control and jumps off the table a lot. This cue really tames the cueball and at the same time ADDS power. Because I am tall, have a long strok and huge follow through, and am used to a heavier break cue, it took me a while to warm up to this cue. I LOVED the look and feel of the cue right out of the shipping package. At first glance, I immediately realized that this was a quality item. However, I couldn't really hit it very well until I practiced for a couple of hours and focused on the new feel. Now I am glad I did, because this looks like the next evolution in my break.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

By the way, did I mention that Richard is a great guy? The pictures I posted here were actually sent to me by him *before* I bought the cue. Just so I could see what it looks like. Who does that? What other company gives you that kind of personal treatment?

Sorry for the long post.

that cue looks amazing, i am a bit envious and i have an x-breaker (X347) of my own. the convcaved tip is intentional richard posted about it not long ago i think he called it the volcanic xtreme tip. ive had my X347 for about the same period of time as you, i love it, my break is not as proficient as some others but my break has improved with the cue, and jumping ive said it before and i will say it again it is almost effortless with the X-Breaker.

Nice review.

Great review man. Fantastic looking cue and I'm glad you're happy with it.
I just have a 40$ Players Sneaky pete with a 50$ Charmer phenolic tip on there.
Ugly, but gets it done. Whatever works! :D

Ha ha. Yeah, I guess it does sound kinda fluffy, but I get excited when something starts working for me. Have you tried one of these? The new one? I'm sure you must have back in PA when he had the series 2. This one is made MUCH better.

I'd love to try one.

I think changes were still being made as late as May 2005 (BCA Nationals), so I don't think I've tried the latest version.

I tried it at the US Open. Richard mentioned that the tip has as unique concave center, is as hard as Phenolic and holds chalk. That is the biggest difference. I loved it and may buy one soon.

Eric >Mr. Impulsive

I also tried it at the US Open as I am in the market for a new break cue. I have not had a chance to try alot of the new models, but the X-Breaker seemed to give me more control of the cue ball. IMHO. I don't know if it is a result of the concave tip, but the cue ball frequently stayed in the center of the table after the break.

Kerry,
Thank you so much for the review. You made it sound like you were my copywriter...:)
Please let me know how things are working as you keep trying the new X Breaker.
I know you have them all, Omen, BK2, and what not, and you have a break over 25 mph, so I really like to know your feedback, and I appreciate you taking the time to post it.

Eric,
It was a real pleasure meeting you. I am sorry we did not have much chance to get to know each other. By the way, I later found out you are recently married, so, please accept my belated congratulation.:)
Thank you for taking the time to visit me and introduce yourself in the US Open.

Fred,
Jim Stadum was fishing in Canada last week:) , but he is back in the office now. I will get your X Breaker out to you as soon as possible. I am sorry about the delay. I have found a very smooth piece of leather for you, I hope you like it.
Thank you for everything.

**************************

The X Breaker was able to park the cue ball and keep it flat even before we used a volcanic X tip, the concave contour helps to increase the contact surface area, reduces unwanted spin, and increase energy transfer.

When we tested cue ball speed, we found that when the cue ball is spinning, the breaker would lose at least 1 mph or more.

We also found that the spin would sometimes turn the cue ball into the side pocket after it hit the top ball.

That is why we do not like to use a hollow front section on our shaft to produce a buckling effect to reduce "deflection" on the break, this buckling effect will spin the cue ball when the hitter hits the cue ball off center, and that would result in a lose of power.

We are planning on going to the Windy City Open but we are not sure yet.

For those of you who are interested in ordering, please contact Joe Neilsen on ebay or Courtney on Billiards911.com to place your order.

Charlie Bryant also can be reached for his own limited edition x347 line X Breaker, which he uses for playing and breaking exclusively. Just drop him a PM.

Thank you very much.

Good review Kerry, very through and no more lengthy than I would expect. :)

Richard,
Do you feel the tip diameter (I read in another thread it was 13.3 mm) is integral to the performance you expect from the x-breaker? In other words, do you think it would loss something at say 12.8 mm? Somehow from trying the previous model at VF, I don't recall it feeling that big. I shoot with a 12.5 mm shaft and I would notice the difference.

edit: One other thing Richard, do you make it with unstained wood, just the natural curly?

OK, you just sold one. New break cue to go with my new break, compliments of Colin Colenso.

Chris

Actually, I don't own the BK2, but I did try it out at Valley Forge last year. I must say I was not crazy about it. It was ok. I have the original BK and like that much better. The Omen is VERY nice. I really love that cue. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I am now carrying 2 break cues (X-Breaker and Omen) and one playing cue (Samsara).

Hi, how are you doing? I remember meeting you in VF, thank you for trying out the X Breaker.
We believe the diameter is important. We are using 13.6mm now, and it really does a great job stopping the cue ball.
We do not recommend reducing the diameter.
We use a golden oak stain because we feel that it looks better. We might introduce a natural stain in the future. We like the stain as it really brings out the natural figure in the wood.
Thank you very much.

Hi Tate,

You can't go wrong with an X-breaker as it's a awesome cue for breaking with.Jumping with it is almost like cheating as it's extremley easy.

Also Richard C is 100% first class person to deal with as I've bought 4 cues from him and a case.I've allways been treated in a respectful manner with all transactions.

If you ever get a good break there's going to be some guys shaking in their boots.:D

Thanks for the reply Richard. I'll try out the new diameter if you're at VF next spring. In the meantime, I'll try Kerry's if we run into each other. That is really big, but you seem to know what you're doing so I'll at least hit with it.

So, you know Kerry? That is great! Please tell him thank you for me when you see him.

Please try the new X Breaker and let me know what you think.

I will be looking forward to meeting you next year.

Regards,
Richard
