I need some input on making a soft hitting cue.

I would like to have a soft hitting cue made for me. I have a preference to Purple Heart and was thinking something like this would be alright?

Purple Heart Sneaky Pete with wood on wood joint (steel pin with a pilot on the shaft) and an ivory ferrule with an Elk Master tip.

Would that produce a soft hit or are materials not that important to the end hit?

Ivory will give you a harder hit, than plastic. I like a soft hit & I make mine with the JUMA material...JER
 
I second what blackheart said about using Juma. It gives a nice mellow hit, very nice if you like the softer hit.
 
While Purpleheart may be your preference, I believe it gives a stiffer hit than most woods. If a sneaky is what you wish, then I would not have purpleheart as the forearm wood. Juma or elforyn wood be an excellent choice for a ferrule material. I also like elforyn as a joint collar.

Thanks everyone for the replies and PMs.

I have also heard that Purple Heart is a stiffer hit, but I love it so much I would make due. It's my favorite wood :) Thanks for the ferrule info as well. I thought since ivory to ivory joints supposedly hit lighter that an ivory ferrule would be the way to go.
 
To take my post a step further, I would suggest that a joint & ferrule of Juma or other softer material will definately help, but to get the hit you want, with a cue made of Purpleheart, it should be cored with Maple...JER
 
You should be fine with a softer ferrule material mated with an elk master tip. The purpleheart sneaky will have a maple front. You might ask your builder to choose a shaft with a low tap tone, too. That'll keep the hit quiet and the feel dampened a bit.
 
If you want a soft hit you could get a corian ferrel . Like what Blue Parot cues uses . I have just a few left ...:cool:
 
Make sure your handle area is the Purple Heart and the forearm Maple for a softer hit. A old style Meucci ferrule would hit even softer than Juma and give more cue ball action. But as mentioned already Juma is a good soft hitting material.
 
I agree that Purple heart might hit harder then It seems depending on other components used, and that It may be better to use It in the handle area. IMO A softer tiger maple may make a good forearm, and other then the Juma mentioned or some other materials MP ivory may be another option for a joint collar and/or ferrule to help soften and dampen a cue.I often use phenolic or linen based type materials, sometimes I feel a cue may hit a bit harder then what I was looking for, and a ferrule and/or tip change helps.

Chris Hightower sells PVC ferrules and they will soften the hit of any cue.
Those with a Kamui soft should do it.

Thanks for the plug. Those are just behind the Meucci ferrules and are much cheaper. We call them High Action ferrules on our tip and ferrule page.

Try using a ferrule-less shaft, just make sure to use a carbon fibre pad.
You'll like it if you want soft.

Actually the older Meucci ferrules really soften up the hit more and produce more cue ball action than the ferruless ones. The compression characteristics of the plastics are the reason that it works that way. Wood does not have that same compress and spring back that the softer ferrules have.
 
How does Juma compare to fiber in terms of how it influences the hit's feel and the action on the cue ball? Does Juma stay clean?

It is generally accepted that some ferrules and tip combinations feel softer than others. Beyond that it is very hard to precisely describe.

Describing hit and feel is just about as hard as describing what sex feels like ... :eek: ... It is just something you need to experience to relate to.

I understand. I wasn't looking for a precise description. As was said above about ivory hitting harder than plastic, I was hoping for a similar general comparison of fiber and juma. I'll probably go with a Triangle tip. I'm also wondering if Juma stays clean.
