I played Nick Varner last night

Yesterday I got to the poolhall and a buddy mentioned that I had just missed Nick Varner but that he'd be back in a few hours. While I was waiting I ended up getting matched up with a guy that had been wanting to play me for a long time. I ended up beating him 3 sets and won $250 off of him before he quit.

Nick Varner showed up while I was playing this guy. After my match ended I went over and introduced myself to Nick, who was showing the owner of the poolhall some of his catalogs. We sat around for nearly an hour and spoke about all things pool related. Nick is in the area because of the recent BCA event and is also going to Shannon Daultons tour stop in Greensboro this weekend. One person mentioned how strong them damn Filipinos are, and the first thing that came to mind was how Nick terrorized a lot of the Filipinos back in the day, and he went on to mention just that. Specifically how he went over to the Philippines and played Efren in that challenge match and tortured him. Someone brought up SVB and he mentioned how enjoys seeing an American player doing so well these days.

Nick then mentioned he had a lot of merchandize in his vehicle so a few people and myself went and helped him bring all his pool products in, including mostly cues & cases. And there were a mess of them. He only made a few sales.

The owner of the poolhall asked if I would like to play Nick and of course I jumped at the chance. A friend of mine that knew my level of play and Nicks suggested that a fair game was 10-4, and the 6-out playing 9 ball. We ended up deciding to play 1 hole and ended up settling on 10-5.

The first two games I shot straight up in the air. I didn't really feel nervous but was just executing poorly. After that I started to settle down and started playing decently but he still got up 4 games on me. Then I ended up winning 2 games in a row which I was pretty happy about. After that we started going back and forth and ended up playing nearly 5 hours and he ended up 3 games up on me before we decided to quit.

It was a fantastic experience getting to match up against a player of Nicks caliber and is a memory that I will not soon forget. It was pretty awesome to get compliments from Nick Varner on good shots that I made and he mentioned that after the first two games, I started to play really well and was very complimentary about my game. He got my number and said that when he comes back through the area that he would give me a call and we could play more.

Here is a very cool shoot that Nick put on me that I didn't was possible. He ended up jawing the ball in his hole.

And here is a picture of Nick and I for proof!

Damn, 10-4 with the 6 out.....I'd take that bet any day of the week.:D

Congrats on the match up. I had the same chance you did about 20 years ago. Only difference is I didn't get to play much against him as I was mainly racking the balls for him. Nick is a great player. Congrats on the 2 games of 1 hole.

What a lifetime memory experience deadpoked! You lucky dog! Congrats on playing well too, it'll make the memory far more "re-tell-able"! I didn't know Varner was coming to Shooters Shannon tourney this weekend. Drater says there's a chance Archer will be there too, and maybe Larry. Davis, Fuller, Abernathy, Sparky are supposedly in... What a field for lil ole Greensboro. Lions and Tigers and Bears!!!

Are all those cues on the table things that Nick brought with him? What kind of cues did he have with him? Did you join a Matt Damon look alike contest? Because you could win it.

Now that you have layed down the bait you can really trap him him next time.

:D

Cool story.

Good for you man, Just the experience of playing a top pro one rack is pretty cool but playing all that time and getting to know them a little is awesome.

Well we ended up playing 10-5 and I won more than just those two games. We played 5 hours and I only ended up down 3 games at the end of the night. Appreciate it.

Very cool. I have met Nick several times over the years and he is a true gentleman of the sport. My second favorite all time player.

Yeah it was a fantastic experience. And that should be an awesome tournament up there. I may make it up there for 1 day.

Very cool. That is something you can hold on to for a long time. Hell, I was just a beginner when I did that challenge match with him back in the 80's and it still feels really good to say that I played.........er..............racked for him. hehe!!

Yeah, those are all of his cues. A gang of them. And I've heard that about Matt Damon before, plus Tom Brady. But I look quite a bit more goofy than they do ;) Ask anyone that's seen me in person.

Congratulations on your game with Nick. I like that shot you showed.

Did Nick make any suggestions on improving your game or was he just glad to have won a few games?

Nice cap.....

No, he didn't mention anything specific about my game. Why mess with perfection? har har. I didn't get your voicemail till afterwards and I didn't think to ask him anything specifically about my game. Next time he comes through I'll be sure to ask and pass it along to you. ;) Thanks bud.

I played Nick as well, cheap 1 pocket even, he missed 1 ball in 7 games. I played just to have the chance to learn. I was up 7-0 the first game, missed a bank and he got'em all. That was the closest I ever got. He was an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to play. I will never forget that southern draw and "shaky" hand.

Got stuck 7 straight games. At my request we talked about a few shots after each game. He also reccomended playing against the one pocket ghost for good offensive practice.

Funny note: A local kid walks in and see me playing Nick and says, "Whos the old guy Keith's robbing over there." :rotflmao:

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to play Nick some 9-ball.
He beat me 7-4.
Even though I lost, I have always remembered it as one of my best pool accomplishments.
I played a world champion and hall of famer... and I won a few games!!!

I have talked to him several times through the years and he is always a gentleman and a great ambassador of the game.
