I think they could

I know that this is like whipping a dead horse and has probably been discussed on here many times over the years…but I can’t see any reason that a top female pro couldn’t compete on a coed tour in 14.1.

The break isn’t a factor like 9-ball or 8-ball, and rotation. There aren’t many shots that come up in 14.1 that you need a lot of strength for. I would bet a moderate sum that if the top 20 or so women only practiced and played 14.1 for six months to a year they would be just as competitive as the top men in a year.

I believe they could play one pocket at a pro level if they played and practiced it more also.

Am I wrong or am I forgetting about something? Johnnyt

The trouble is, with not very many top-level women players interested in these games (I know there are a few such as Jennette Lee, but not many), it would take a LOT more than a year before they caught up with men who have been practicing these games their whole lives. One-pocket and 14.1 are both games that take years of experience to master the patterns, tactics, and touch involved, and between great shooters and position players, it's pattern play, shot selection, and touch that make the difference.

Raise a generation of female players who have strong aptitude for the game, are straight shooters, and have a strong interest in all games from childhood, and then we'd see women who have no excuse to lose to the top men. But today's women who have only ever had 9-ball as an option for high-level tournament play, are way behind the one-pocket and 14.1 learning curve.

Yeah your probably right Andrew. The women would need more than a year. Johnnyt

Well, damn! You think they coulda found her a tougher opponent?!

the trouble with the age old debate about whether women players are as good as men is that until we've got about the same amount of women playing the game at the top level as the men we'll never know. for every real top class woman there's hundreds of men at the same level. i do think jasmin ouschan can compete though, she oozes class. i reckon it's only a matter of time before she wins a tournament against the men. 9-ball or straight. she's definitley capable of it anyway.

Last TV appearance I caught of hers begged to differ. Unless she's usually a LOT better than that, I think she's got an awful long way to go.

I agree that sooner before later she will win a mens tournament. In 9-ball she has a way to gor for that. Johnnyt

I don't think that the women are worried about competing with men at this point in time....The first goal they should set is beating Allison and Karen......(on a consistant basis) on the already established womens tour...

If I remember correctly.....Allison and Karen did not fair very well in any of the IPT events....My hunch is that none of the other women would fair any better.....(at this point in time)

There are a "ton" of talented male players just waiting to burst on to the scene...(Examples of players that came out of no where and are now considered amongst the ranks of top players in the world) Cory D,Thorsten H, Danny B, John S, SVB, ??? .....There is just a ton more relatively unknown talent out there just waiting to get their chance...

I am in no way saying they should not be allowed to enter against the men....I am just saying that the top five ranked women have no chance against an actual fully Pro field of players.......(and likely don't really care anyway)

It's always suprised me that more Snooker players (both male and female) have not taken to Straight Pool as it's the closest thing to Snooker on a Pool table. But like anything else you have to go where the money is and practice the tournament game you play if you are a Pro. If the WPBA changed from playing 9 Ball to Straight Pool I've no doubt Allison Fisher and Karen Corr would take to it like ducks to water.

However if they played Pro Straight Pool for a year or so it would be interesting to see what kind of consistent runs they'd make.
