I Would Not Be the Mosconi Cup Captain Again! - UNLESS...............

simple--select the captain and team early. then they can meet for shorter get together 's at every major tournament. which they would all go to if the are going to be the top players. no real cost for that except maybe spending an extra day there if necessary..

also like suggested have a few extras you can trade out for those that arent cutting the mustard.

its a team event and if they dont act like a team they are off. its better to have those that want to be there and win even if you lose than have those that are wasting time.

budgeting a trip like this to London is a guessing game,

CJ, I will gladly donate the $150 for cab fare if that is one less hurdle the US team has to overcome. Focus should be the main point of the team. They shouldn't have to worry about cash flow when representing our country at the international level. We all love this game. Let me know.

You know how awkward it is to be in a foreign country, where they use change instead of paper money (not exclusively of course).....then have to book a cab and be told that the ride is $170 .....not the most pleasant experience after a tough defeat 9/11...or is it 911. ;)

The Mosconi Cup doesn't pay the check until 2 weeks AFTER the event.... budgeting a trip like this to London is a guessing game, I had no idea how expensive it was so I only took a couple of thousand.....which ended up being barrrrrellllyyyy enough. :welcome:

Why are people wanting to saddle Mark Wilson with this mess? Mark Wilson may be one of the elite pool instructors in the world. He also is obviously doing a great job with his college program. None of that has much to do with taking 5 to 7 professional egos with a few weeks notice and somehow melding that into a team. Mark wouldn't be changing their stroke or play capabilities in one or two weeks.

The biggest problems with Mosconi Cup aren't going be solved with Coaching. The first thing is to find a way to put the best players, who really want to play and can conduct themselves professionally, on the team. That hasn't happened with the past two teams, that's for sure. There needs to be some structure on how they're chosen and it needs to be done much sooner prior to the event.

It seems the other issue here is financials. If this event is going to be held every year, the players and Coaches should be compensated and all their expenses should be paid.

Perhaps it would make more sense to have this event every second or third year. Create more hype and try to come up with more dollars to promote the event and take care of the players compensation and expenses. As it stands right now, I wouldn't want to touch this Cluster called the Mosconi Cup with a 10 foot pole.

my bad!

I'm busy defending you champ . Read the previous post.

Touche' - I though my eyes were playing tricks on me, my bad. :D I read some pretty strange stuff on here. One time they were going to make a list of 100 players that would play for money......that would be an awesome 3 weeks. ;)

I had a great time being the Mosconi Cup Captain in London last year. We came within one match of winning and went up against "all odds" getting into that position. imho

We could see the first day that we were "outrunning the nutz" in the Mosconi Cup....the "deck" was stacked against us in every way, shape and form. Johnny Archer and I dealt with this "reality" and did everything we could to change the course of history.....and we didn't quite make it, although it could not have been any closer.

There is a way to win the Mosconi Cup for the USA Team - I would help out any way possible assure this success. Here are the changes that would have to happen for the USA Team to have a legitimate chance to win - and assure a much better competition.

1) The Captain would have the choice of two extra players that would be part of the team and give the Captain leverage to "bench" players that refused to follow training protocol. Without this factor the players can simply refuse to participate which causes direct and indirect damage to the team's overall abilities.

2) The Team would be allowed a budget of $5,000 to train for the week prior to the Mosconi Cup TOGETHER in the USA. This would give the Captain and team time to unify and train and put together a comprehensive game plan to strengthen the team as one solid unit.

3) The training week would be video taped and used as a promo to the Mosconi Cup (much like the Earl Strickland Doc was this year). This would give the players even more incentive to be productive if they were part of the show, much like Boxing does to motivate the boxers and personalize them to the fans.

4) The USA would need their own practice room so they could have privacy to train, communicate and work on what they need to with the coach on an individual basis.

5) The USA team would require paid transportation to and from the airport (we had a van pick us up, but had to take a cab back to the airport in London at a cost of over $150).

Has anyone asked you to be the "Mosconi Cup Captain"??????????????

Please pardon my ignorance, but could someone please tell me how the team is selected? Also, is the current expectation that the coach is also a team manger? Or, has there been consideration to using or consulting with a person to help the team manage and budget expenses or other negotiations? Let the players focus on playing, let the coach focus on coaching, let the manager attend to the details like booking hotels or transportation or negotiating practice spaces or trying to gather or raise funds.

I'd genuinely appreciate a little background on how team selection works and from there how some of the dynamics work for the captain and coach. I'd like to offer more meaningful feedback, but I am afraid I am a bit ignorant about the Mosconi cup besides what I see in online videos or read here.

CJ.. I won more side bets betting on you at the US Open than any other player. I once bet on you with a friend when you were playing Sal Butera at the Open when it was at the Holiday Inn . Sal was up 4 games to 1 when we made the bet. He said to me are you crazy when I asked him to bet . He said Sal is up 4 to 1 and you want CJ? Guess who won the bet . You should get back on tour.

so the players & Captain(s) winnings are paid @ Net 14? wow - plus 10 days for the check to clear....

the players & Captain(s) expenses are covered, right?
- prepaid?
- and allowing how many days in advance of start date? (i ask because of jet-lag & practice time)

*i say "Captain(s)", because Buddy was a Co-Captain

Matchroom Sports picked all 10 players this year ("wildcard picks"). Due in part because the BCA points system was no longer a significant indicator of strength. BCA points had been a major determining selection factor for many years prior. Matchroom also chose to go with a playing captain this year, which is the exception to the rule.

There's no manager. I believe players are on their own to book all their arrangements. They get a stipend to cover expenses.

Yes, and it was 15k to the winner and 7500 to the loser.....the Captains get 3500. I think after expenses I profited about 1500......thought about retiring to the south of Paris......Paris Texas that is. ;)

LMAO, I hear Paris, TX is lovely this time of year.

But FYI, this year they jacked up earnings to $10k and $20K. Not sure what captains got though.

I've been taught to appreciate my elders.

I know you're a bit up there in age, and I've been taught to appreciate my elders. One piece of advice though - when asking questions it appears like you're a bit senile when you add 16 question marks to something that has a very obvious answer.

Food for thought old buddy. ;) 'The Game is the Teacher'

Ha, I do the Ropes with my eyes closed.

But when you're a Master of Tai Kwon Leap, like I am, impossible things in life are possible.

Tae-Kwon-Leap is not a path to a door, but a road leading forever towards the horizon.

Money is a hindrance to your personal goals. If one thinks that money can solve problems in their lives, they have much to learn.

The Impossible is the Teacher.

Remember CJ. It is a poor carpenter that blames his tools on shoddy workmanship.

Maybe he is old enough it just looks like he has Nine Balls. They tend to sag a little when you get a little long in the tooth.

Get Mark to enter a major tournament.. Then run a calcutta and see how much money he brings. Now put CJ in that same calcutta and compare. Enough said.

Put Butch Harmon and Tiger woods in a tournament and no ones picking Butch
Take both of them to Range at a event and no ones coming to Tiger for instructions

Ones a player trying to teach ones a coach trying to play

And if we are talking the best players being the coach CJ is well down on that list
why not just make Shane or Earl or even Capt Hook the coach

Earl was a carpenter when he was young as well.

I AM the son of a carpenter, that's a fact. :D Earl was a carpenter when he was young as well....that's how come we masted the "hammer stroke" LMAO!

I am the son of a carpenter as well CJ.

That is where I learned how to cut a board twice and it was still too short. That and hammering my thumb on occasion and learned how to say bad words.

But, I think we are all Sons of a Carpenter in the grand scheme of life.
