Identify this cue?

Hello everyone, a friend of mine pointed me to these forums saying that I may be able to get an answer to something that has been bugging me.

I received this cue from a friend about 6 or so years ago, unclear on the back story but basically it was given to him by a family member and he never used it so he gave it to me. It sat in my closet untouched up until a few months ago when I busted the shaft on my normal cue and needed a quick replacement for league the next day.

After shooting with it for about 2 months now I've actually come to enjoy it, and after using it quite I bit I've noticed that it is actually a pretty decent cue.

In my opinion the wood is absolutely gorgeous, its a hair beat-up now but you can see that in its prime it is pretty nice. I'm not so quick to assume that it is worth anything however as it has plastic collars, yet I also have a hard time believing that it is worthless due to the nice wood.

There are no marking or stamps visible anywhere on the cue...

So anyways, I was just curious if anyone happened to know what this was, or even what it isn't.

Thanks a bunch,
-Jasen

(Better pictures can be taken if needed, these were some quick parking-lot shots to show to a friend)

Thanks again!

Looks like a refinished Meucci to me.

Can you post up bigger pics with higher resolution?

Its so hard to see the cue!!

:D

Looks like an old Mali to me too.

I concur, looks like an old mali, they do play nice but probably worth 50-$75. plays like a few hundred though...

Is it possible for you guys to tell me what features you are looking at to make this determination?

Thanks!

Mali, it has that 'look', especially the butt ring and the color of the plate. A good aged Mali, straight, two shafts has some value, and if it hits good then deal with it.

I sent an email to the address found on Mali's website asking for help identifying the cue... hopefully they will get back to me.

I will update the thread if I hear back from them. In the mean time if you have any other ideas feel free to let me know.

Thanks for everyone's help!

LOL I was thinking the same thing. It made my PC look like it was using dial up for a connection1

To the OP, Mali seems about right to me.

Yea, sorry about the resolution... my phone takes some pretty big pictures.

Figured the browsers resize them to your viewable area anyways so it wasn't a big deal.

So assuming Mali comes back saying it is one of theirs, wouldn't we be looking at multiple hundreds of dollars and not the 50-75 mentioned above?

No biggie about the pics, as far as the value goes I dont think it will be multiples of hundreds. Personally I was thinking more around 75 - 100 but I may be wrong.

Used Mali's don't bring much. Hell new Mali's don't bring much either. Looks like a 5/16-18 Pin Just sayin.

Really is a nice piece of wood. I don't know the value but if you like it's hit
I'd say it's a keeper.

Thinking I might have it refinished... same color and all, just some new clear. Get it re-wrapped, new tip, and the shaft sanded smooth...

Definitely a keeper after that.

What kinda price you think I'd be looking at to get that kind of work done? (I'm completely new to the cue business...)

I have 5 Mali's from different years and have to agree that it is very similar to them. The black butt and ring style tells me early 90's. However I cant place a model number for it as Mali started making the "Show Mali's" after this one was made. Probably had a silver Mali logo on the butt originally. Only thing that gets me is the 5/16x18 pin. Every Mali I own has either a 3/10 or a 5/16x14.

Insofar as contacting Mali, they aren't going to be able to tell you anything. I have spoken with them on the phone to get information for a Mali Cue Research Website I wanted to build. I was told nobody still worked there from before 2000 (when their cues were popular.) Mali cue production is now done overseas since 2001. Nobody in NY has any information or catalogs to review. Its sickening :(

Value for yours on a good day would top at $100 bucks in pristine condition. Probably retailed for around $160 new back in the day. I just cant understand why a Mali doesn't hold value as well built as they were.

If you post a picture of the exposed bolt in the buttcap, closer look at the joint ring for the butt section and the shaft then we can be more accurate that it is in fact a Mali. I'd say Im 85%. I just havent seen that particular one before =)

Regards,
Roy
