Pic one shows a side view of the doweled wood, looks almost like a cross between palm and BW ebony, though very white and the black grains seem blurry, not sharp lines in the wood like palm I have worked with. The second pic is an end grain that shows some palm characteristics. Though nothing like the red palm or black palm that I have used in the past . Almost like BW ebony in places. Maybe spalted palm??? Any ideas guys? I am undecided. I got it in a package deal of equipment and the prev owner has no idea. Pardon the wax covered end grain.

don't know

I don't have any idea what it is but it looks kinda cool!:)

if it is bleached

then the bleach penetrated into the whole piece evenly, I cut this from a square and the color shading is very close as i color balanced the camera before i shot it. The end grain looks like palm somewhat and is yellowed by the heavy wax. The side view has some BW ebony characteristics, and if you look close you see color fracture lines like spalting in places. I may use this wood for handle sections of an unwrapped cue and the more slender dowel as a forearm. I wish i could get more as it is way cool! I have only three 18 inch long pieces.
The Tamarin is possible, spalted, but way more dark streaks than I ever noticed in that species before, but I have not seen a lot of Tamarin. I think it is possible.

is it heavy?

if it is very heavy it might be that Dalmation Ebony.it is similar to black and white Ebony, but it has dots instead of streaks.

thoughts

If it were Zebra would not the end grain show lines for the rings rather than the dots we see?
If it were Palm would not the streaks on the side view be well defined lines? These are like blurred streaks, very black but blurred edges, and sometime black clumps.
I never heard of dalmation ebony, but it may be possible, the wood has some heft to it, a tad less than the black ebony I have but close. But the palm I have is also very dense. This wood is much more dense than any zebra I carry. I did not figure out the weight per cubic foot but I can if needed. Thanks for all the interesting thoughts so far guys! ANd yes it is an amazing piece of wood.

i agree with chris

i have some pieces of spalted tamarin that look exactly like that. chuck

How bout boke massebirch at least I think that is how you spell it.

I have worked with Boke Masserbirch several times and it's definitley NOT Boke... the grain isn't the same !

I'm leaning torward the "spalted tamarin" myself but can't give an accurate answer on what is !

It looks like the Black and White Ebony that Bell Forest had at the Expo this year to me. How is the weight compared to regular ebony?

weight of mystery wood

I weighed and measured the wood in question and compared it with a piece of black ebony I have in stock. The mystery wood is 21% lighter. But still way more dense than maple, or other common woods. Is BW ebony usually lighter Chris?
