Identifying 1980's Meucci cue

Hi all,

I need some expert help on identifying an old Meucci. I operated a pool room in Brooklyn, NY in the early 1980's. A Meucci salesman came in one day looking to see if I was interested in selling cues. This was before the "rebirth" of the pool business thanks to the movie "The Color of Money". In NYC, at the time, business was slow, and break-ins were common.
Not to waste the salesman's time, I did buy 2 Meucci's. They were different from his other samples because they had "Meucci Cue Tournament Champion" in the butt. The salesman told me that the cues were part of a prize package in a tournament that the company hosted in Texas. The winner, Alan Hopkins, could not accept the cues because he was under contract to another cue manufacturer.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gerard

It's an MO-3 with a different stamp.

Meucci used to sponsor tournaments and the cues were supposed to go to the winner.

Nice identification, and fyi the BB of pool cues has the wrong pic for MO-3, it shows the same pic for MO-2 & MO-3.

Thank you South_Florida. I'm not sure what the BB of pool cues is. I would love more information.

Thanks.

it looks like a model after the pill bumper cues and while they still used the brass pin...

Thank you, Chris.
Yes, this cue does have a brass pin. I don't know if that helps identify the cue any better, but that was a great observation.

Pool Guy,
To my knowledge, there was no repair done to this cue prior to me purchasing them from the Meucci salesman. When the salesman showed the cues to me, they where brand new, and unused.

What year did you purchase this cue and who was the sales person?

Certainly not the original ferrule and I'm thinking the butt collar cracked and was replaced.
The shaft collar should of been replaced too, but the repair person probably didn't have a replacement or didn't know how to make one.

I bought the cue in the summer of 1984. I don't remember the salesman name. I sure he gave me a business card, but that's long gone. He had a large, salesman's cue with about 12 to 18 cues in it. As I said, I was having trouble with break-ins at the time. The last thing that I wanted was to carry cue inventory that would just have been stolen.
I think you might be on the right track. Meucci probably replaced the original butt cap with the specialized butt cap to add it to their prize package.

As poolguy4u said the joints been worked on, not the original ferrule, and not the original bumper.

i just acquired a similar cue

It looks like an 84-2 but has the different stamping.

Considering on all of the internet there is this one and the one above, how rare are they?

Meucci was the sponsor for tounaments and used to give these cues out to the winner. There were different model cues but with the same stamp.

Also, Meucci's made in the mid-80's had the wraps coated with urethane that eventually turned a pinkish hue.
