If there was a $1500 added tourney with 64 players would you object to paying quarters instead of a green fee? Or would you prefer a higher green fee? (I'm asking because if you got out early you'd actually spend less money with quarters than you would with a green fee.)

I did the math, and if you make it all the way through the winners bracket without losing that would be $30 in quarters spent.

If you got knocked out mid way then made it all the way through the losers bracket it would be $35-$40 spent.

With the $10 entry fee and $1500 added your looking at a prize pool of $2140. First would be paid $1070, Second $642 and Third $428.

Personally I wouldn't mind spending the quarters for a bigger paying event. But before I make any changes to what I had planned I wanted to get some opinions from the players.

Which would you prefer?

1) I'd prefer to play in a $500 added tournament with a $5 Green Fee
2) I'd prefer to play in a $1500 added tournament with approx $35 in quarters spent if I win
3) I'd prefer to play in a $1500 added tournament with a $15 Green Fee

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Daniel,

I would rather play in a $50 or $60 tournament with $750-$1000 added and finish in one day, Saturday. Then do it again on Sunday.

Add in an "Advanced" players meeting both days and Bada Bing.

Split quarters is the fairest way to go because it doesn't penalize the weaker players. If you go 2 and out it only cost you $5-$6 in a race to 7 format. The guys paying the most are the ones winning.

Fair or not it seems that most players favor a greens fee over constantly digging out quarters. No question that the players that go out early subsidize those that go deep but not to the extent it would first seem just because of the ever shrinking number of players as the tournament goes on. If the greens fee is calculated to only cover the games played or a bit more I think it is the way to go. The inflated greens fees often seen are another subject matter.

Thank you very much for your opinions. Anyone else care to chime in on your preferred method is? Quarters or green fee?

+1 for green fees.

Quarters are just a hassle compared to green fees. Often the tables are open to players out of the tourney, so comparing the guys who go two or three and out to the guys who go real far does not hold much bearing.

Nobody is going to want to plug $30-$40 worth of quarters into a tournament or even carry that many, what an annoying PITA and it seems really nickle and dime classless. Everyone would need 3-4 rolls and even thinking about handling that many quarters makes me feel like I need to wash my hands already.

I'd rather pay green fees upfront, even if it cost more.

Then again I wouln't invest $40 or more in a tournament either if I didn't think I had a good chance to at least place in the money, and I think most people feel the same way. Bigger payout is going to mean a wider draw of top players, but probably fewer overall numbers and less local lower ranked players. Less people overall means less food and or liquor sales, less profits. The top players going for big money won't be drinking either, but if you draw more local amateurs they probably will be.

The fairest way to do this is simply make it loser pays time. Then every one in the event pays twice with the exception of the tournament winner. Pay what you play and no more.

Greens fees simplify matters, ALLOT. The house is guaranteed their cut, there are NO issues with opening tables. The house doesn't have to deal with Handling of all the coinage. If a good player gets knocked in the losers bracket early WILL they will contiune showing up for all their matches? From the losers side, the amount of quarters can easily equal your entry fees and just to break even you HAVE to finish often in the top 8, and some players will forfeit because its too risky to pay another hotel night and food and coinage.
