I play in a BCA sanctioned in-house league at Q-Masters called the Virginia Beach Billiard Club. I'm rated a 7.9 or something... not sure what rating is most important. If I lose it's usually on the 8 ball :)

The GGRPL is a local independent FUN league with about 30 or so teams.
There is an annual $35 tavern, $12 annual player sanction fee and costs $2 a week to play.
All money (after expenses) goes toward trophies, year end banquet and many many door prizes. The LO is paid for expenses and a very small amount for his time (after years of doing it for free).

It based on the APA with several changes. The most notable are:
Call ball and pocket.
No 23 rule.
Safeties DO COUNT as innings.
All matches are played the the full SL, not minus 1 or 2 in the case of a 7.
A player is not penalized for winning because the opponent scratches on the 8, 8 in wrong pocket etc. (unless the APA has recently made a change).
League rules and rule changes are voted on at the captains meetings before each session!

The league is split into 3 divisions determined by the quality of the teams and how they place in the preceding session.

What I like best about this league is the no 23 rule which allows you to put a team of friends together with the fear of having to drop a player because his SL went up. Having grown up in a pool room I do not many low level players so my team consists of 2 SL5, 1 SL6 and 5 SL7. I am the captain and weakest player on the team at SL5.

APA 8-ball SL7. I'd like to try other leagues (14.1, 9-ball, APA masters), but I don't have the time for more than one, and I like the people in my current league a lot, so I haven't yet gotten around to branching out.

$2 a week to play?! That's cheap! :P
Yes it is! Now get this, a few years ago it was only 50 cents and there was major opposition at the captains meeting when it was raised to $1.00.

I have that exact same problem. Hopefully, once I start my biz, and get laid off from one of my jobs, I can branch out.

That's hilarious!

Last night was my first night playing BCA, since I moved to southern OR. Met some very nice people here. I finally unpacked my cue which has been dormant for a couple months. :p They rated me a 9. Not sure what that means. When I played APA about 10 years ago, I was a 7 in 8ball.

Apa Sl 5

I play 2 nights a week in the local APA League as a SL5, 1 night of 8 ball and 1 night of double jeopardy.

Been thinking about joining a TAP or BCA team, just haven't done it yet.

I wasn't aware that BCA rated players? Am I missing something?

The way they do it is to rate all players and then give them handicaps for each round. We had to give up 35 points. Each win is worth 10 and since you play 5 games a night, you should get 50 points for a perfect 5-0 record.

If you win our game and I have 4 balls left on the table, then I would only get 3 points. If you run the table and scratch on the 8 (making the 8) like I did last night, then you get 7 points which is the max you can earn without winning.

Anything lower than a perfect 10 is a % of your win/loss record, so I am in the 90's, hence, a 9.

ah, I get it...

Down here, they just throw you and and let you learn to swim on your own.

Chalk up another for VNEA.

Here the handicaps are 6 to 11 with .5 points in between.

I am an 11.

Personally I would love to see how the stats of some of the players here match up against other leagues and see if we can draw some type of comparision to equal ground. I have never tried APA and so therefore have no idea what an SL7 is.
