If you as a Cuemaker offer (2) PINS (THREAD TYPES) to customers!

What (1) is you favorite Thread, Pin Type, and WHY?

I settled on the 3/8-10 joint screw a long time ago. The reason is that I like things that are simple & things that work well. The joint screw holds the shaft to the butt section & this screw does it very well. The simple part is that this screw can be installed by simply making a hole, tapping that hole & glueing in the screw. What could be more simple? No bushings, no extra steps, no extra pieces. Quick, easy, effective...JER

I put on whatever the customer wants (if I can get it).
I recommend Radial pins, mostly because of their precision, and the fact that the tapped threads are so strong. (round instead of pointed).

Totally in agreement with everything said except that I don't offer the Uni-loc quick disconnect pin.

I offer, radial ball screw, 3/8X10, 3/8X11 and 5/16X14 stainless. I think there all okay if you know how to drill and tap a straight. Preferred for my own playing cue, flat faced.

Dick, what do you not like about the Uni-Lock ?

Neil. It is ok to PM the reply.

3x8-10 and 5x16-14. thats about all i use anyway. not that i cant do any pin but there is no difference 3x8-10 and 11 or 5x16-14 and 18. IMO

pins

I will try to please the customer's interest with any choice. I don't personally like the short quick release joints and I will tell the customer so. I question their longevity. I know people that have had them for decades with no wearing problems, or so they will say. I have also repaired toooo many of them though, and my experience makes my decision/opinion. My preferences are 3/8 X 10TPI straight or radial. No big complaints about the 5/16th's ones but I like a slightly larger screw. Doesn't everyone!

A number of things. In no particular order:

1. Why are they needed except maybe in a break/jump that I don't make many of.
2. They are expensive.
3. I just don't trust the shallow thread count.
4. The alignment pin is so snug that any dirt or shavings can cause a problem in breaking the cue down.
5. Proper installation is critical for them to fit and operate correctly.

Some of my worries may be unfounded and there are probably other problems that I haven't stated but these will suffice. Why is the great need for speed in putting the cue away needed anyway? A long, finer thread pin gives more bargaining time when trying to get a larger spot between sets.

I think the few Cues I own are either 3/8 x 10's or Radials!....

i use a 3/8-10 . i router all my threads so the fit is perfect. i always use the K.I.S.S. rule. (keep it simple stupid)

Thanks Dick.

I use 5/16-18
I don't offer anything else, as none else makes a shaft that fits my handle anyhow.
