If you can't play sober, what makes you think you can play drunk?

OK, I fell guilty to this question last night, when I was seriously overserved at my local honkeytonk.

Even so, I walked away a winner. Any other stories out there?yyyy

I always play better after having a couple of drinks. It seems to loosen me up, and my stroke is better. But let me emphasize on having a couple of drinks, not 6 or more to were your hammered.

I've seen and heard plenty of guys that thought they played better after a few drinks. All I can say is.... Thanks!

There is one guy at our local club that is one of our better players, stone sober. I've seen him falling down drunk and I sometimes think he's playing better. Probably isn't, but it sure seems like it. It's actually quite a show. I haven't seen anyone else play that well while drunk. He certainly is the exception to the rule.

Personally I usually get one beer just before I play and nurse it over the course of the match. I rarely finish it before the match is over, so it isn't affecting me in the slightest, but it gives me a diversion if I need one.

Of course after I play is another matter. :D

Some people think they play better after a couple of drinks. How can they tell if they always have a few drinks before they play?

I personally think they lose their inhabitions after a few drinks and work up the nerve to get out there and play.

What they should do is practice more and play more. This might step their games up considerabbly.

If you knocked off a tournament after drinking more than you shold have, consider yourself lucky or the competition might have been as drunk as you were.

Drinking beer is one of the few things that I am very good at. Having said that, I won't play serious pool at all with even a sip in me. I'll bang around balls at home and drink beer, but it's coke or water for me if I got my quarter up.

Playing drunk CAN make one play better. I say 'can' because it does happen, but is rarer than many want to believe. Of course, most drunks have to be drunk to even operate on an even keel. Then there is the rare person, such as a guy I know, whose brain constantly gets in the way of his game. Being drunk eliminates that problem.

A little story.... The guy I mentioned, was a low B player at best. He got in a ring game in a bar with his brother (an A player), myself (A player), another A player, and a couple of strong B's. He had nothing else to do, and knew all of us, so, we were happy to let him play. He gets absolutely snockered. He is so drunk that he can't even sit in a chair. Everytime we sat him in a chair, he would literally pour out of it like he was made of water. We then would laugh, and leave him on the floor until his turn. When it was his turn, we would pick him up and bring him to the table.

I'll be darned if he didn't play some of the best pool I have ever seen! He ran out from everywhere, racks at a time! We were all dumbfounded. He was so wasted, he didn't even know he was winning or know enough to collect the money. We did shove the money in his pocket after each game. He ended up winning a little over 200 and we were only playing for a dollar a man! Next day when he woke up, he had no idea where all that money came from, but he sure was happy to have it!

So, it CAN happen, but far more often than not, a player will go broke once he gets drunk.

:thud:

I can relate. The funniest part is the expression on their face. Dead as dead serious, swaying too and fro, and that stupid little smile (smirk?) after they make it. They keep going and going, stumbling drunk and stupid cocky.

Cheers,
RG

When I was much younger I played maybe my best pool and best bowling one night when I was drunk as a skunk....hard to remember though.

Now I'm too old to drink and be allowed near long pointy objects.

for me i can play with or without beer (or alcohol).

Maybe i am one of those who can play better when contaminated by alcohol though i have my limit as well, maximum only of 12 bottles of beers.

One time i am playing on a tournament and my opponent seems to bully me asking if we could bet so i ended saying yes for around $50.00. I lost coz my opponent seems getting to my nerve, he sharks me so i ask him for a rematch.

After a week we played 10balls r. 15 bet is around usd450.00, while playing i drink beer and my opponent was amazed while the match is ongoing that my game is getting better, i run racks and played excellent safeties. So i won the game 15-10 and i already consumed around 10 bottles of beer, i thought the game is finish so i drink more then after few minutes my opponent ask for another game for lesser bet of USD 110.00 coz they dont have more money, i declined and said we should bet same or higher or else i wont play. it is only an alibi coz i am still drinking, I thought they can not produce same amount but unfortunately they managed so we started second game. I still continued my beer and i think i did have too much so I lost the second match 11-15. all in all i drunk 18bots.

Well atleast i got my lesson and learn my capacity...:)

And we have not yet begun to discuss the stone cold alcoholics...you know, the ones who can't function without it. I know a guy who would drink a 12pk in 30 min on the way to the poolroom, played pretty damn good 1p too...IIRC he played Joyner 10-7.

He's friggin jello, without the juice in him.

I firmly believe you can drink yourself into a good place and drink yourself into a horrible place sometime after the good place. The main problem is the good place starts when you loosen up which may be drink 1, the bad place starts right around when you start cataloging your drinks to your buddies like "I had three shots of Goose, 4 long islands...etc"

I think there is a happy medium. I also think this convo isn't limited to alcohol, there's a limit on weed, coke, pain killers, etc.....

How many people play pool totally sober? How many people gamble totally sober? Think about that, include everything too drugs and booze. I think the numbers would lean towards the chemicals.

There was a time, many, many years ago, when I played the best bar table pool I had ever played up until that time on a combination of wine and marijuana. I gave up both about 33 years ago........

Never mind about when you're drunk, how do you tactfully avoid separating a guy from his money when he's obviously hammered and the bar/pool hall you're playing in isn't your regular one?

I've side stepped that a few times, thinking I may take his money but then his friends might just take it back for taking advantage of their friends.

As for me drinking, well if it's just me and a friend or two fooling around yeah I hit the bottle a bit, but for serious games, none for me.
