If you had room for a pool table???

If you are serious about pool and have ANY other responsibilities in life, be that family or otherwise, how could you not have a table? I could understand not having a table once things in your life slow down and you can hit the pool room just about every day, but other than that a table is an absolute must!

I was like several others on this site, when the wife and I would look at houses I would ALWAYS measure off the space for my 9' table. Having room for a 9' table was an absolute must, it was non-negotiable.

My problem, like others have mentioned is staying interested in practice without getting out and competing. If I can just get out a couple times a month it keeps my practice time interesting but if I go a couple of weeks without playing anyone I have a hard time practicing for more than 10-15 minutes.

***Another thing I like to explain to my non-pool playing friends is how unbelievably affordable pool as a hobby can be. Even if you pay up to 5k for a table (which I didn't do) you can have that for the rest of your life. Compare that to golf. You can't put a golf course in your basement.

If you had the space for the pool table of your dreams, if you had the money for it and the room with your significant others blessing, would you put the table in your home?

Or do you prefer to go to the pool rooms for all of the other things that they provide.

I don't have room for one but if I did, I "think" I would like to have one in my home but am really not sure. I kind of fear that in some way I might lose the love for the game if I had a table in my home. I have to say it would be nice to have a table at home to practice on when you felt like it, instead of waiting for a particular time to show up at the pool room.

Not having to put yourself into the smoky environment just to get in or stay in stroke would be a super plus for me.

I would not want to irritate my better half with the clicking & clanking of balls being pocketed for hours on end, day after day. So, if I did have a table at home, I would probably like to have it in a separated room where I could play at any hour I chose.

Since having a pool table in the house was part of the home buying negotiation... I (we) made sure there was room in each home we've
purchased. The fact that it's in the family room off the kitchen is a
little annoying to my wife and daughter... but that's offset by knowing
where I am for a lot of my playing time.

I have to say since most of my play is just home therapy to unwind, I couldn't think of a better way to do it than have a table at home. It's
also a great way to entertain freinds who like the game (if they don't mind
watching someone run out)..... if they can't play, the cover doesn't even
come off.

The bad thing is..... those 'honeydo's' take a much lower spot on the priority list. ;) or ..... maybe that's not so 'bad'.

I picked my house based on space for the pool table.
Looked at over 30 houses and ended up further away from work than I wanted.
A friend of mine did the same thing. :)

On Thursday my Diamond 9 footer will be setup!!!

I wanted space for a 9' table AND a wood shop.
12 years ago I bought a rundown 5,000 sq. ft. 60 year old schoolhouse 50 miles from where I worked.
I sold my Ducati motorcycle and bought a 9' Diamond Pro, that I installed in one of the three classrooms, that is now my living room and kitchen, as well.
I just recently recovered with Simmonis 760 and updated the rails to 2010 spec. (Thanks for the phone help RealKingCobra!)
The auditorium is now my wood shop.
I still occasionally visit the few pool halls around here that have a 9' table, but don't stay long because of the smoke.
I have a good friend that comes over every Sunday for several hours play, and a list of others I can call.
So yes, get a table by any means possible!

I have a tighter pocketed valley table now. I'm adding a 10' snooker table soon. I'm moving the Valley over to one side of the room, and i will have both!! The snooker table will need some TLC, but it will be in good standing soon.

Thanks,

Justin

I do not have enough room at home for a pool table. And I love my pool hall, because it is Buffalo's Billiards, the worlds pool hall. Plenty of good folks. Lots of great tables. Open 24/7. Plenty of good players in there all the time, not to mention the champions that come there a lot. All size tables as well. Table one is so tight that only one ball will get in a pocket! About an inch on one side of the ball more. Real tight. Tables kept up real good. Good thread JoeyA.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Where's the "Like" button?

Joey, Joey, Joey, is this a trick question? Of course the response for a question like this on a billiard website will have a percentage of close to 100 in favor of.

I've had my table for over 30 years and still love the convenience of hitting balls anytime I feel like it. I think it's great to be watching TV or doing something else and just happen to think about a certain pool situation or shot sequence and then be able to set up that shot and try it.

I still go to the pool rooms to play for competition and such but it's nice to go there knowing that you're not completely out of stroke. Plus for practice, look at all the money you save.

One thing is that your table must be in a place where you can control the heat or cold otherwise what's the point if you can only use it on certain times.

No Frank, it's not a trick question and it's something I have pondered for a very long time. Besides having no room in any of my homes that I have owned, I have never had rooms for a 9 foot table and that's the only size I would have.

You bring up another important point that if I were to get a table I would have to add a separate building to house my table.

For those who have their table in a separate building, do you find it a major inconvience to heat or cool the room when you are ready to play. Or do you just keep the separated building on a temperature controlled setting and leave it on all of the time?

I remember one guy who had a table in his garage and he had to wait an hour or so for it to cool down before he could stand playing on his table. That kind of gives me pause.

Like Lock said, Buffalo Billiards is a special kind of pool room and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. Still, a table at home, separated from the main house would make this dog HOWL.

And yeah Frank, I envy guys like you but I am happy for you at the same time.

Best regards,

When we had to move out of the old place after over 20 years, the first priority for me was to have room for a table. Lally columns had to be removed, a steel beam put it, walls built, electrical wiring installed and a small bar has still to be built. Worth it? You betcha!

A full 9' table would be just a tad too snug, so I found a nice Pro-8' and called it close enough. Feels like a big table when you play on it. Is there cause to go to the local room with their 9' Diamonds? Sure, what fun is it playing all by yourself, or with the wife all the time? But anytime I want to hit some balls around, the table is right there... no table fee.

I still have a ton of work to do on this place, but come winter, I fully expect to be down there practicing at least 2-3 hours a day. I will be bringing my 27" iMac down there so I can watch YouTube matches and play instructional DVDs in the same room as the table, plus I will be setting up a tripod to record my practice sessions with my camcorder.

Maybe some day I'll be brave enough to put them up on my YouTube channel and post links for critique by folks who can actually play the game. I can't, and may never be able to, but none of this impedes my lifelong love of the game. May I never get so good that I become jaded by it all.

Hell yeah

I have a very old brunswick in storage. It has a place in my home-when i buy a home but single family homes in desirable areas of socal aint cheap. When that time comes I'd still go out to play locally for fun and competition-but staying home to shoot and avoid some douchebaggery would b cool.

I'd have to put a table in if I had the money and space for a 9 footer. But mostly for my son, he's getting pretty good and there is only one place he can play in after 6pm, which is about a 1.5 hour round trip drive for us.

Another reason for having a table at home, you can control how it plays and the condition of it. You don't have to pick between a way too fast table to one with a rip in it to one that has 4 pockets that are cut funny, or all three. I'd want one there to practice on without having to listen to JayZ yell about his niggas and *****es on the jukebox at max volume.

I vote for the table in the home .

I have one that gets very little use unless I know I'm going to play in a tournament, then I practice up a little. But I love it to use it to give private lessons (not often); for socializing with family/friends, especially if there are kids involved; and to just knock them around trying out cues and such. It's a blast. I keep the pockets fairly big to be sociable and have pocket reducers if I need a little extra concentration for practice.

Do it! :)

I bought a house with a pool table in mind. Wish I had known more about pool at the time. Got an 8 footer in the living room (would love to have a 9 foot diamond). I absolutely love having it. I shoot on it just about every day. The kids (all older but still live at home) say I need an intervention. I told them get their own place and they can have want they want ! I love practicing on it and even do things like try to break and run all the balls in 8 ball before the commercials end. When I want company i go out and play. My game has gotten sooooo much better having a home table you can't imagine. After league sometimes when i get home if I had missed a shot I remember and set it up at home and shoot it over and over. Also have a nice tv in the room and set up the computer to broadcast the big truck matches. If I see a shot I like or wonder how the guy made it I set it up on the table and try myself. Seems to me I've done that over a couple balls I have seen you hit on the big screen !

I grew up with my parents pool table, but when I turned 18 and moved out I quit playing pool and table was dismantled. 28 years later (last year) my friend was in need of a quick replacement for his team so I started shooting again. Bought a 9' Gold Crown for the basement last January and I use it at least 5 days a week, I could not imagine not having a pool table at home. I also live about an hour from the nearest pool room. The great thing is when you play alot on a 9' table, every shot is a short one on a bar table. I am looking to find some local people to entertain and shoot pool with, thats one problem with living off of the beaten path.

Every serious pool player should have regulation table at home if space, money, spouse approves. At times you cannot go to pool hall yet you want to maintain stroke, it is really very helpful. Mine in the basement, i stop playing when she go to bed, otherwise no complain except i treat my table better than i treat her,,she thinks!!!

I had one in my house for years. Maybe that's why I'm single now because my pool table is in the living room? I can't imagine not having one. Last two houses I've bought I required a room big enough to fit the pool table. I can only think of one draw back; sometimes it stops you from going to the pool room. But we don't really have any good pool rooms near where I live anyway.

Another thing that nice about having a big ass pool table in the house is that it doubles as a work table. Put the cover on it and you can do a little project on it or use it as a laundry table or when you are cleaning up the house you can pile things on top of it.

An interesting thought there, "...treat my table better than i treat her,,she thinks...".

I wonder which gets cursed more? Hmmmm.

I am lucky enough to have a large enough house that the family can't hear my pool-hollerin, if they are in beds.

That said, I don't break hard past bedtime either.

pool table

yes i have a gc3 in my baement for the past 27 years. i like it because i can play and study anytime i want. it can be expensive going out to play all the time. i do play on a league one night a week to meet people with the same passion as me. when i bought my house i went to the basement first to see if if it would fit first i had to put a beam in to remove a post in the way i have 16ft side to side 26 ft head to foot it is not the same game with obstructions

You make me laugh Naji. Sounds like you married my wife's sister. Here in this part of Louisiana, we do not have basements. I like the basement location for a pool table because it is separated from the home somewhat but you now tell me otherwise. No matter, the basement is out for me.
