Timing is everything, but everyone takes it for granted! Time your every move, and see the difference it makes in your game! If use timing for everything you can make the shots over and over again and get better shape as well. Example.... Time your stance, pre shot routine, Long and short shots, Stroke and how many times you stroke, make your stroke the same amount of times for every shot, And follow thru whenever you can. If you are close to the rail with the cue ball do not jack up the back of your cue. If this helps your game at all please let me know!!! Thanks.

Years ago when I first started a routine it seemed as though it was taking a long time in between shots.

After a while it seemed as though it only took a few seconds.

I take 2 warm up strokes and then shoot. I've tried to take 3 but that doesnt work for me. It seems that if I take more warm up strokes that I begin to change things. Call the 2 strokes my natural rythm and I do try to keep the time between each shot the same.

I think it was Mosconi that said moving around the table is like a dance.

Thanks L&L for the reminder.

People will find their natural cadence eventually... The most effective way I have gotten to this quickly with people is to have them tell me their favorite song.... Usually their personal cadence will be similar to the tempo, bass riff or the chorus cadence..... You have them play for awhile using this song and they will fall into a comfortable natural rhythm pretty quickly.....

NOW here is the fun stuff...... The natural rhythm has a ton to do with your excitement level and you heart rate......... I have a high heart rate and always have and I am usually at a slightly elevated excitement level just getting onto the table.......

My normal tempo is pretty well tuned to something along The Stroke By Billy Squire.... If I get anxious or disinterested the heart rate changes and I am no longer in rhythm if I am still playing at my normal tempo... Either I have to alter my tempo or I learn to control my emotions....

I am sure many of you will relate to a story I have... I was playing a guy I didn't know in a tournament a few years ago... It was an early match... I wasn't ready to play yet... The guy was not impressive so there was nothing to get my fire lit..... Race to 9 I find myself down 6-2.... I get angry... My heartrate goes up and suddenly I am awake and on fire..... I end up winning 7 of the next 8 to win 9-7.........

I thought I had finally found my key... I spent years playing mad... Hating the guy across the table..... I finally realized WHY that tactic worked.... I was setting my emotional tone to set the heart rate that matched my normal tempo.......

I learned I didn't have to hate the guy across from me and it was a happy day.... I actually find myself rooting for guys I play when they come with something spectacular that they will finish the rack since it would be deserving......

I also have learned that hating was a whole lot easier than not.... Controlling highs and lows if your focus is despite is pretty easy.... Not so easy thru breathing and sock adjusting or whatever.... Inner dialogue works well but what works best is music...... I can throw in my 9ball playlist and pretty much control my heartrate and tempo thru the music so it matches my natural cadence or tempo.......

I have problems maintaining focus and concentration. Last week I tried listening to music while shooting. It worked great in my match until my league director told me it was against the rules. Bummer, now I have to find some other way. Any suggestions ?

Sing. Anything by Janis Joplin is good (hold a whiskey bottle for extra realism).

PJ was only partially having fun with the Sing comment....

For lots of people the inner voice babbles constantly... Stuff about how bad you hit this last time... Did you see the rack on that waitress... Don't CHOKE now..... All sorts of distractions from right inside of your head.... Makes it hard to focus for lots of players......

Practice using your headphones... Don't make a playlist.... Loop your favorite song until you know it completely......

When you play.... Hum the song.... Humming like singing or listening to music occupies the part of your brain that controls speech and will put the kibosh on your unwanted inner dialogue and help you concentrate....

Humming your favorite song will also keep you in your personal cadence....

Excellent!

I definitely find that singing in your head helps a lot to find your personal cadence. At the age of 15, I started playing music professionally. When I find myself playing bad in a match, I ask my opponent for a quick break and go wash my hands or grab a beverage from the bar so I can lock a tune in my head to get back into a rhythm.

Another thing that also helps me personally is a trick I learned from Bert Kinister while taking lessons and shooting the Mighty X drill. I find if I am really getting out of stroke, I take a couple of shots with no practice strokes at all. I look at my angle to make the ball and get shape and then I setup and fire the shot. It works well for me to get back into my natural stroke.

I like your style of thinking! Good post into my thread.
