If you use Elmer for leather wrap glue ...

I'm getting ready to experiment with my first leather wrap and was wondering if you use Elmer glue (I will experiment with mixing it down with water), do you let it dry it a bit on both side like contact cement or ??? I'm thinking otherwise, the wrap will move on me.

I "read" that some people recommending rubber cement for first few wraps .. is that just for "practice" (wax on, wax off .. or in my case, whack on, whack off) ...

Thanks in advance.

Use sharp tools. They don't hurt as much when you cut yourself with them.

Here's another thread from not too long ago on the same topic: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=167507

Thanks for the thread ... I actually do a bit of research before posting and few threads I read said nothing about whether they let Elmer's glue dry it a bit on both side like contact cement. Thus I started this thread.

Some people might find my reasoning stupid (who's dumb enough to ask to dry out a wood glue!) but I have absolutely no idea. I'm thinking (and will experiment) drying a bit until it's tacky but not dry.

I do think wet Elmer's glue might be a bit slippery as the substance is very similar to my personal product I produce after 3 minutes on youporn.

JCIN, sharp tools are for pussies!!!! I like 'em slightly dull with chips in the blade.

Elmer's glue for linen, contact for leather, plain and simple. If you've ever used both in the past for projects, you'll know the reasons why they exist. By the time elmers dries hard enough to finish the wrap of leather, you'll be a day older and the seam still won't be done yet. You would need to wrap the whole leather wrap with surgical tubing to maintain pressure while drying, and the seam would be intersting at best. Just my opinion, from experience. I do pooltable recovering, and to me, a leather wrap isn't a whole lot different. There is pulling, and pushing to make a seam come together and exact placement is very important, and any movement becomes a problem. Elmers or any long set glue doesn't set quick enough and still leave adhesion after semi-dry, and therefore isn't a good choice overall IMHO.

Cut the Elmers at least 30 percent with water, It will give you longer dry time. Do not let it dry before putting it down. It dries quick. Are you using a leather jig?

I'm going to be using Hightower setup (mid size headstock with indexer to lockdown the butt) and using his metal "straight edge" on the cross slide to cut the seam on locked down butt.

Hi Ho
How did it work out for you. If you get stumped shoot me an email. I might be able to help you.

No photos for Cyrex as my fingers survived the weekend.

First wrap, Kangaroo, did not survive the weekend. It drowned in Elmer mixture. The 12 inch handle was sliding in the white mixture like my 12 inch handle after few mins of youpron videos.

My second rap, tacky cowhide, did survive in contact cement but left the nasty edges on the seam and a bit overlaps of the leather on the butt sleeve.

Back to the drawing board .. am in contemplation mode to digest what happened over the weekend and where I can improve. I'm sure to have cue with most expensive hacked leather wrap yet!!!!

I'd suggest to others not to start off with your most expensive leather on the first cue

No matter what you use, it takes a little practice. You don't need half a bottle to put it on. You and I have known each other for quite a while, Send me a regular email, I can send you some step by step photo's to help you out.

The cheapest leather wraps you can learn on is buying a leather coat or jacket at Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift stores for 5 dollars, you can get about thirty wraps out of that fiver. And one of the trials felt and looked great so it's still on the cue.--Leonard

So far in this single thread you have said in different posts:

Is this REALLY necessary? None of us care about your sexual fetish and it adds NOTHING to the discussion or the advancemet of the craft.

If others disagree with me, just say so and I'll add his name to my Ignore list.

My 2 cents,

Gary

GEBrown,

You can put me on your ignored list ... my parents didn't name me "Ho" for nothing. :groucho:

Hidy Ho <--- not lying about the 12 inch handle
