I am one of the most adament people that states that women are not in the top 100. This does not mean I believe it is impossible.
This discussion has sprung many times. JB you were one who originally stated Kelly could play with these guys. I believe a fair arrangement to find a fair game to be played.
Why not start even races to 18. Every set adjust by one ball and bet the cumulative winnings. At some point, the lesser player will win as the spotter will be giving up more weight than they have a chance with. At this point, all monies will be even then lessen the spot by 1/2 ball and bet half the most recent bet. (Ex. even for $1,000 - call 8 $1,000 - last 3 $2,000 - wild 7,8 $4,000 then spotter loses game is either call 7 and 8, or 7 last 3 for $2,000). This gives the spotting player a reason to try to win more sets giving the spot so that the bet is higher. Guarantee someone goes home two sets winner.
Kelly can play with these guys. But one Kelly Fisher, who is a world beater, against 100/200 males who are also world beaters is not good odds.
I like your idea of starting even and having a set spot/bet adjustment. Seems pretty fair to me. We may have to try that against some of the folks on your list at some point down the road.
I am sure that there are some names on your list that Kelly can beat even. And no I am not going to name them, nor am I going to post $20,000 to prove it. I just feel that even over the long run Kelly would prove to be the better player and this is based on my own observations of these players and their accomplishments/results in the past 20 years. I might be wrong but there is no solution on the horizon for my opinion to be tested in tournament play and I do not have the time or the money to test my opinion in heads-up matches.
But if I did have the money then I am certain that Kelly's play would get better and better with each tough match she played. We always talk about seasoning and never give the women credit that they might improve with seasoning.
Can she catch up to Johnny Archer? Probably not, but possibly. You take a guy that's been going full out against other world beaters since he was 16 and expect someone who hasn't had that "been beat on by everyone everywhere" experience to be as good? No chance.
But shot for shot, Kelly Fisher is as good as Johnny Archer. There is no shot that he can make that she can't. None. Does he perform better in clutch situations? You bet he does, because he has been doing it longer against tougher opponents. Would Kelly develop that ability to perform as well as Johnny given the same experience? Possibly, likely in my opinion because she already has the drive, knows how to play under the lights, been in the spotlight. But she doesn't have that same level of street experience in pool games that Johnny and most of the male pros have.
Fine, I agree then that this is what keeps her out of the top 100 players alive.
I don't however agree that she has to stay there. And I guess that this is where we have to agree to disagree. I have faith that players like Kelly, Allison, Karen, Jasmin, Xiao Ting Pan, and others can get even better than they are now.
If we get a chance though I will bet something using your spot/bet arrangement. I am sure I will be in Valley Forge next year - maybe there if things work out. Again though I am not speaking for any female player. If they want to play it's totally up to them. It would just be fun to see how it plays out.
