I'm A New Guy

I've been reading stuff on the forum but just joined azbilliards. I recently moved from a very active pool area (Mesa, Arizona) to an area with much less pool (Salt Lake City) and need to keep in touch with the pool playing community.:) Lots of play and strong players in Mesa and Phoenix and I will miss them.

Welcome to the forum! You will be able to interact with such a varied pool bunch and also pick up a pointer or two. :)

Mr. Nice Guy:

I will be in SLC... June 21 through June 26th.... maybe we can get together and bust some racks... I used to know a couple of places...

Welcome to the board :)

The last time I was in SLC was back in 1999. I stayed at a hotel near a pool hall (within walking distance). While I stayed there, they were filming an episode of some show that had Cathy Lee Gifford in it, and used the hotel as a "location" shot.

I'm thinking "the only 'shot' I want to do is on a table".

I wish I could remember the Hotel's name, street address, etc... But, I do remember walking out through the front doors, turning left, and walking down about 2.5 blocks. I tried my first "out of town" tournement there.

I also remember walking out throught the front doors, turning left, and then left again, walking for a long while and entering the HUGE convention center there in SLC.

One last thought, if memory serves, the pool hall was on the second floor.

Let me know if it's still there, please. I'd love to go back and try my hand at the tourney again.

I hope your decision to move will give you many rewards. I wish you the best that you allow yourself to attain.

salt lake

A friend was born and raised in Salt Lake. He got married and became a citizen somewhere along the line but when I paid him a visit or two up there he cautioned me that there were a few areas it was very easy to get made dead in. Seeing as how he was rough as a cob in his younger days I took his warning seriously. There are places to gamble but I would take my time learning the lay of the land.

Sure, there are some tough parts of Salt Lake, but the city is the cleanest and probably one of the safest cities you can find in The States.

I have been going to SLC since 1972, and have found it to be a friendly place that has some fun shopping, museums, sports, and entertainment.

I have played in a couple of places there... One was called E.O.'s and I think Ace Brown shot there.

I played in another place that was quite nice... down State Street almost to Sandy... I just was banging around and got no action/saw no action.

I'm sure that SLC is large enough to have some pool action somewhere.

Bill, I like Salt Lake

Bill,

I like Salt Lake and the people there. However here are the facts for 2004, the last year stat's are available for Salt Lake. Crime is worse than the national average for every category tracked. What is more, crime is increasing rapidly in Salt Lake meaning that later stat's will be even worse unless the trend changes radically.

I just used the compare function to check Salt Lake against New Orleans, Washington DC, and New York NY. I have to say the results amazed me. Check for yourself.

Mr Nice Guy Is Really A Nice Guy

Being an old Salt Lake guy and then meeting Mr. Nice Guy when he lived down here in Arizona, I was in a perfect position to pass along my wisdom and insights  to him.

I can tell you all for sure that ---

He really is a genuinely nice guy,
Salt Lake has enough pool players to keep him busy,
He will enjoy living in that area.

Just as long as he doesn't marry into the local church there and pick up a few extra spouses and end up with many, many little "Mr. Nice Kids!!!":o

SLC in June

I work for a large financial institution and travel a lot. Please let me know what your schedule is and we'll hook up if at all possible.

Looking forward to it.

I'm not aware of a pool room in SLC that is located on the 2d floor of anything but I'll ask around.

Thanks for the well wishes on the move - it was a big decision and their was some financial incentive.

There does appear some places around here that should be avoided and I certainly don't want to "made dead!" I am definitely keeping a low profile and getting the lay of the land.

EO's is still around. I've been spending some time there-couple of pretty strong players hang out there. There's also a bowling alley downtown that has a bunch of pool tables-but the tables don't seem to be in the best of shape.

I have heard Ace Browns name. There are at least two or three other very good players in the area - one of which is Mark Tad.

What brings you to Salt Lake on a regular basis ?

Thanks for your help getting set up here.

So far-you were dead on about everything you said about SLC!

Welcome
