If you cant consistantly run 5-7 balls in rotation..... this is what you should be practicing. Its not a matter of impressing your opponent, its a matter of playing better pool, and playing the percentages. Lets say you have a 3 in 10 chance on a combination, versus a 5 in 10 chance at running 6 balls, or even a 7 in 10 chance on a safety. The latter 2 options are a much better strategy IMO than trying to ride the money balls given the chance.
If someone can't run 5-7 balls consistently, and they have the 7 out and the breaks, they'll lose all their cash, their car, and house trying to run out every rack. Trying to run out against a top player is a death sentence, there's just no other way about it. You have to play smarter, not harder.
Everyone is always practicing their run outs. I think it's almost lip service to tell players "try to get better." I understood the original post requesting tools to WIN, not tools on how to get better in the long run. The simple answer is take advantage of the extra money balls - in whatever way possible.

Taking low percentage shots (caroms, combinations etc) versus working on your ability to run 5-7 balls or playing safe is suicide.
Again, I have to respectfully disagree. As I understand your comment, you're comparing apples and oranges. What someone should do in practice ("working on your ability") versus in a match ("taking low percentage shots") is not a legitimate comparison. Everyone should work on making more balls. But in a match, there's no time to "practice" running out. As I previously stated, if something is tied up (say the 5 and 6) then taking a lower percentage combo is NOT suicide. It's a free chance to win, without selling out. I STRONGLY recommend to the original poster to NOT try running out every game. It's fine to run out if the table lays good, but simply trying to run out every time you're at the table is a bad gambling strategy...
I also recommend taking the agressive road towards the extra money balls. You have to use those extra balls to your advantage. I'm not suggesting turning retarded and whacking every turn, but I am suggesting shooting at more combos than you would if you had no spot. Almost everyone that gambles will tell you this. I think the majority of the above posts concur with this advice...
