I don't know John Barton personally, nor have I had any business dealings with him, but from what I've read on AZ I think he's a lot like Joe Barringer in the respect that he speaks his mind, and sometimes in doing so he rubs people the wrong way. However, some people in this overly-protective, politically-correct world are just waaaaaaaay too friggin' sensitive.

Sure, there are those people out there that have been "screwed over" by John and Joe. If that small group of people feel they have a legitimate gripe, that's ok. But if you just disagree with what these guys write on AZ just cuz you don't like them and you *gotta* add your 2 cents worth, you're just fanning the flames. Neither of these guys will back down. They'll continue to push their side of the argument. All of a sudden, they're the bad guys.

There's a really easy solution: If you don't like them, don't do business with them, and don't read the threads about them. Problem solved.

I haven't met you or JB...but I think this is a 'stand up' post.
JB needs a presence on AZ to hawk his wares......
...but 97.05% of his posts comes from his enthusiasm for pool and other
things not related to his business.

I know them both. Putting them together is a clear insult to John. John is a really good guy. He is not trying to beat you out of anything. His grandmother never taught him to gracefully back out of a disagreement. I conceed that fact.

The same hornets nest has been hanging in the same tree in the woods behind my house for years. They don't bother me. I don't poke the nest with a stick.

Not trying to instigate a John vs. Joe thread, and although John may be a little nutzo and sinister at times, come-on man.

I didn't say John and Joe are EXACTLY the same in EVERY way possible. I simply said that they both stand their ground and don't back down from an argument. That's all I said.

I feel bad for the guy, even though we used to squabble for hours.

He's improved 500% after returning from the ban, but it's still open season on him. I guess some would argue he painted the target on his own back. But the other guy loaded up with the name-calling and 'chinese slave labor' crap, which earned the mildest of responses.

John's replies to this have been very even-tempered. Good on him. I think he's learning.

Remember when George Bush said "I am the decider"? Well when it comes to gambling on pool I am the donater. (yes grammar police it should be donor....)

I have been called many things but graceful is not one of them.

I don't know what happened in the Duddy/Baretta bash thread that got it closed. I don't think I said anything mean to anyone. Brian from Georgia was trying to go off on me a little as if I ducked Eric but the fact of is when I say I will play then I will play and when I say I won't play then I won't.

It's really simple, I grew up in the pool room barking and woofing up games. I know how it works. I don't mind if people want to bark at me in service of matching up.

But I do mind when they go over the line on a forum because what's written is permanent and what is spoken is not. You want to make jokes about child slavery and say that I use six year olds while you are barking at me to play in the pit at SBE, great go for it if you think that will put me on tilt and get me to play you....

You want to do it here where people actually believe that nonsense then it's over the line in my opinion.

That's basically where I am coming from.

To illustrate I will tell you a story, which I am sure Eric will dispute and call me a liar. But anyway......

Back in 93 I think I was at the SBE as a guest of Toby Kim of Kim Steel tables. I had a little corner of his booth and was displaying my cases. Also at the show was my friend Enzo, an Italian who owned a poolroom in Germany, and Klaus Zobrekis, a german pro. (Now Klaus is the owner of Z9 cloth).

Anyway me and Enzo and Klaus were in Markley's billiards at night after the show and we started barking at the NYC crowd or they at us and we ended up matching up Klaus with Ginky. Klaus was getting the 8 and had to give Ginky a game on the wire. Anyway, Klaus wins the first set fairly easily and the second set Klaus goes nuts and starts doing things like banking the last three balls, just obviously tossing Ginky the set. What Klaus didn't know is that Enzo and I had bet another $400 on the second set. So anyway Klaus loses and we pull up $400 loser.

We go to breakfast and ask Klaus what he was thinking. He says, oh I just wanted to show them I can play I didn't want to win any money because my friend told me I could get hurt if I win money in the pool rooms in America. I said um you could have told us that and showed them you could play on your own money.

But now, to the point of the story.........

The next day the NYC crowd who was backing Ginky (NOT GINKY) shows up at the Kim Steel booth and loudly starts woofing at me to put Klaus back in the box again. Some of them are challenging me and getting really out of line for where they were. Basically pool room barking but done at the booth. It got so heated that I actually had to get Allen Hopkins to tell them to stop.

The point is that there is a place for that type of ribbing and it's not on this forum and not at a person's job (booth).

I LOVE action and there are a lot of folks here who have been with me in the pool room. I am not a mouse in the corner and can't stand it if I am not stirring something up within five minutes of walking in the door. But I keep it in the pool room.

Ask 12 Squared, Dave Gross, on here if you don't believe me.

If that's not cool with anyone then feel free to flame me as much as you like. I won't engage you on the pool room level unless we are both actually IN the pool room.

Um, I have never screwed anyone over and certainly not anyone on AZB. I routinely lose money making sure people are happy when we do something wrong.

I can't help it though if I hold views that aren't in-line with others and they take it to a personal level. From a sociological perspective we are witness to an unprecedented level of vitriol that is driven by distance.

But it's not new. Written word flame wars have been around as long as the written word. Famous scientists have often flamed each other publicly and privately for years. Being outspoken and contrary is a sure fire way to draw criticism and when the critics can't make logical and factual points they inevitably resort to personal slurs and deliberately false accusations. That seems to be the nature of some people. It's just how it is and frankly will never stop.

At the end it all comes back to Victor Frankl's observation, between stimulus and response lies choice.

As they say, haters are gonna hate. How you choose to respond dictates where the interaction goes. Pull out the glock and bust a word-cap on their ass and they will respond the same way. Pull out a big peace sign and respond calmly then they might realize how badly they come across and decide to find another target. Or best, ignore them and let them be jerks with no troll-food...but that requires far thicker skin than I have.

Anyway, I don't screw people over.
