In your opinion who are the best up and coming cue makers...

Darrin Hill is a good cuemaker. He's an up and coming cuemaker. And he's got a ton of passion. He's got an obvious following in the Chicago area. But, he's got a ways to go, just like many other up and coming cuemakers. Many up and coming cuemakers I personally put well ahead of Darrin. That's shouldn't come as an insult or as a surprise to anyone. Let's not make it one.

I don't want this to turn into an anti-anyone. My post was specifically responding to words that suggested that Darrin is the best at this and the best at that. I'm sure you've seen plenty of his work. If you have an opportunity to see plenty of others (up and comers), then you'd agree with me. He's got a ways to go if someone wants to proclaim his as the best at this and the best at that.

There are entirely too many good cuemakers to make such a bold statement. Not when the comparisons between so many good up and coming cuemakers makes such statement ridiculous at best.

Hello Fred

Yeah I wasn't trying to start a controversial thing, nor was I saying you insulted anyone. I'm assuming your opinion is valid, but I was interested in the technical details that lead you to that opinion. If I put you on the spot, then I apologize.

Hi Fred thanks for the kind words about me and my cues. Just had to post you spelled my name wrong no worries it happens all the time.

Kent Davis has come up with a different taper on his shafts that really improves the hit of (any) cue.
Kent has been a finished carpenter for many years, and so working with wood comes very natural for him. He makes an outstanding cue with very exact points and inlays. He sells quite a few in my room.

Oh, just go ahead and spell my name wrong so we can be even.

Fred <~~~ should know better

I played with the Sugartree that I bought from TAR this weekend. The cue hits really good, its a fairly stiff hit with good feel to it. The workmanship in the cue is great and the wood chosen for this cue is just beautiful. The Mahogany and the Bark Inclusion birdseye is just stunning.

I did 4 races to 7 with the 9ball Ghost and won 7-5/7-4/7-6/7-6. The score doesnt show it but I actually played much better the last two sets as I got more accustomed to the cue. For now, I am going to put the Szamboti away and play some with this cue. I really like it.

A buddy who was over tried the ST out some and he also really liked the hit. To me the hit reminds me a bit of a Southwest. Stiff but with decent feedback and control is how I would describe it.

Didn't you post a little while ago saying you were playing horrible, David? :p

Beating the ghost three in a row is pretty good in my book. You must of found your stroke again.

I lost 6-10, 9-10,9-10 to the ten ball ghost last week (up 7-3 last set and still choked) so maybe I should start shopping for a Sugartree.

I know, I have been bellyaching alot about how bad I have been playing. I really have been playing bad, and have not felt like even playing pool because it had gotten so frustrating. I think motivation to play is a major part of how well you play. I had that Sugartree sitting by my office desk for 6 hrs on Friday. It was really sharking me at work. I even took it out and put it together 3 different times. Staff members here at work walked by and there I am air stroking it on my desk. lol that looked silly. So, after thinking about wanting to play all day on Friday, I was really charged up to get on the home table and hit some balls. I actually got to play for 5 or 6 hours on Sunday, a real rarity.

Im really paying for it now though, my knee and shoulder are both hurting bigtime this morning. No biggie though, I love my new Sugartree, and am already thinking about getting back on the home table again tonight.

can't believe only one person's mentioned kevin varney, and only in passing.

his cues are one of the few that stand out in a sea of imatators, when everyone else is trying to make fancy cues with lots of inlays and ivory, KV makes one of the most beautiful cleanly made simple cues out there. and i know what everyone here thinks of his j/b's.

one of these days when i graduate from 'aspiring player' to 'cue-collecting has been' i will def be owning a few varneys, which probably will have gone up a lot in price by then. :) (just kidding about the cue-collecting has been, i think cue collecting is a wonderful hobby and im just jealous cuz i don't have enough money to even afford more than one cue at a time)
