Inexpensive Cue for Newer Player

I have a friend who has been shooting for about 2 years in bars and decided to join the local league. He wants to get his own cue without going over $200. He has shot with several different cues and would like to shoot with a low deflection shaft. I told him that McDermotts G-Core were in his price range but he wanted more options. What else should I have him look into?

G-Core isn't all that low deflection really...steer him to a poison, a players HXT or whatever it is. Or a Cuttec R360.

Schmelke, really nice people, really nice stuff, call and order from them directly and they'll make you anything you want, for super stupid silly fair prices. American made to boot. They also produce flat laminates LD shafts as well.

Cuetec R360

Players HXT

McDermott G-Core

Those would be the three I would look at. Not sure how truly LD any of them are, I have a Players HXT shaft and it's not very LD at all. I don't think the other two are in the same league as a Predator/OB/etc. But, I think for a sub-$200 cue they'll all be a great choice that are probably a little more LD than some.

Other option would be to pick up a really cheap sneaky or other butt with a standard joint and then a good used LD shaft. Something like a $50 JJ sneaky butt and a used OB Classic would make for a sweet playing stick for $200.

Have you considered used production cues?

Used Predator Sneaky Pete with a 314 shaft may be within his $200 budget. Pay $15 to have the shaft clean, add a new tip and you practically have a new cue.

I recommend a players or lucassi. Nothing special about which cue he/she ever uses. It's all in your head
Any brand would work really.

This is the way to go IMO.

Check out Lucasi

McDermott Lucky Cue and 2 or 3 hours of lessons with a qualified instructor? It can always be a spare "car cue" after a better one is purchased......

Is your friend close to a place that has a decent selection of such cues available to look at, feel, touch, swing etc.? The stick has to look and feel good to him, or I doubt he'll like it. We can recommend some brands and models to steer a bit, but that's only half the battle IMO.

Buy what you try...,

Keep an eye out for a big tournament in your area, find out if someone will be there selling cues, go there and try every cue in your price range.

If your going to be in Texas, Vegas, Chicago, New York there are plenty of tournaments with brokers setting up shop for the weekend

+1 for McD "Lucky" Cues. Waaaay under $100 and play pretty dang good.

Not to mention that the market is kinda rough for used cues these days. I bet the player could get alot of cue on the used market for the $200 or less that the Op described. Not that it's necessary for this player, but probably possible.

Any Pure-X cue will do the job. I started out with a PureX HXT30 and still have it. I've had a bit of work done to it over time but it's still my cue =)

At this point a McDermott Lucky for about $40 as someone else mentioned is an excellent suggestion. For about $100 a Schmelke Sneaky Pete.Play with 1 of those while just improving his game, all the while building up a little more money & testing other peoples cues to determine what he likes.I hope this helps y'all !!!

I would look for a used McDermott D model, make sure the shaft is straight have a cue repair man put a good tip on it .

Some times you can get into a good used custom for that amount.
