I have a couple of old Dufferin and Brunswick cues I bought for $10 each. I refinished/retipped them, and they play great for a newby like me. I am a big fan of Mcdermotts, but aren't the less expesnive Mcdermott cues made in China? If so, for less than $35, Delta cues sold on Ebay are tough to beat.

First thought: try your local craigslist, many cues to choose from if you're in a fairly large metro area.

Second thought: I'll also vouch for a Player's brand cue. In fact, I still use my Player's j/b after 8 or so years. I've never even thought about upgrading. Real good bang for your $, IMO.

I don't always recommend an inexpensive cue, but when I do
It's always a Players.

I've always found that the issue with cheap cues isn't limited to who makes it, they're a bit more inconsistent than that. I've owned a players which I then upgraded with a 314 shaft a year or two later because it was pretty snotty (it just didn't have a good feel to it). That being said, that stick would now be 14 years old. I've played with players cues that felt great, the Mcdermott lucky series always feels quite nice, the vipers always felt like budweiser cues, loose and ugly. I'd suggest taking them down to the local billiards hall (if there's one nearby) and letting them hit a few of the cheap players/lucky cues and see which ones they like. If they get to pick their 'favorite' there's more chance they'll respect the cue and it'll last a LOT longer!

Lucky cues by McDermott all the way. For the money the quality Nd hit can't be beat. I got 1 from Ozone Billiards for cheaper than the McD website and couldn't be happier. Different colors and designs too.

Were the collars at the joint real or just some overlay stuff . If the collars are real thats a deal .

i was thinking of picking up a few for the wall....

I have to agree. In addition to being made in the USA, Schmelke offers quality cues at excellent price points. Go to the Billiard Warehouse for their pool cue ordering form that shows options you may find interesting. Remember the #1 rule: You Get What You Pay For!
