installing cloth staples vs contact glue

I'm getting ready to install new cloth on my GC1 table. I watched a youtube video on someone installing new simonis cloth on a diamond table only using contact cement.

Knowing each time we use staples we damage the wood is glue the better new approach over the old staple method?

Note they did not show the rails being covered only the bed.

I am thinking of using a combination of 777 contact cement at the pockets with some staples and stapes for the rest.

In the video they use a heavy contact glue with a roller not the spray on type.

thank you for your input.

You can use staples however a heavy duty contact adhesive has become the preferred method when installing worsted cloth that needs to maintain a tight stretch. Adhesive also reduces adding more staple holes to the slate liner. The adhesive is 3M-10 Scotch Weld

Sir, i just used the diamond video and the 3-M glue to recover 2 8' bar boxes. The video was invaluable having not done it before. If i may advise you,pay close attention to the crease they make on the long side and the measurement they take from the crease. The reason may be apparent to you already and if so I apologize for stating the obvious. If not [as it wasn't to me] the crease shows you where the glue goes and the line shows you where to stretch to. I'm going to glue the cloth on my GCIV when the time comes. It works very well.

thank you all

I know, I'm so scared! I'm afraid of getting glue all over the place and I know cleanup would never get rid of it.

I also noted that he started at the side pocket and this is the tricky part of the glue process. you must leave a little slack for the side pocket to fit nicely and then stretch the heck out of it to the end rails to remove the slack you left. I can see the guy is really stretching the cloth that scared me too! RIP>>>>>>>>!OUCH!

Any more input would be greatly appreciated! This is all new to me.

i was apprehensive to. Let the glue tack up [about 5-10 min.]. the instructions are on the can. That way the glue sticks to itself and not you. do it exactly like the video and it works great. I downloaded it from you tube to my laptop. Must have watch it 20 times. LOL Notice how he rolls the glue onto the roller. even with no wet spots. Don't drip it on just roll it. There might be a specific type of roller that works better than others. It being my first time i grabbed the cheapest ones. It worked ok but there might be something better that one of the mechs might let you know about.

The DVD that Simonis produced is stapled. I don't know if glue is their preferred method these days. The scotch-weld 10 is very hazardous to your health.

If I was covering tables every day I'd use a respirator. Since I'm not and only do the occasional table these days I don't worry about it. Haven't noticed any lingering glue odor once it dries. Regardless of the type of glue used it's hazardous. Read the can info. I'd rather use 3M10 instead of Super 77.

I'm not a mechanic but ... unless you plan to recover a home table as many times as a commercial table, or your backing is already gone, why glue? Again I'm not a mechanic and I am sorry if I offended the experts.

Personally like the fact that with glue the cloth completely adheres to the slate compared to spot attachment where staples are placed and there's no staples to remove on a recover when using glue.

glue cloth

I was wondering if you have to do much in the way of clean up preparation the second time you replace the cloth with the glue method? I know removing old glue can be a pain.

it might be quicker then pulling old staples?

any other videos

are there any other videos that shows this glue process other then the one I saw on youtube?

Rick,
Read both of the MSDS sheets on those two. They are not even in the same league. One can buy 77 from Home Depot while the 3m10 is sold industrial only and is banned in several states.
