This is for a friend. He has a lathe that will hold a shaft properly. On the tailstock he has a chuck with a morse taper So he can move a drillbit or whatever needed to the base of the shaft to do the work. He is wanting to make some jump cues and has the butts with a 3/8 x 10 thread. The joints would be wood to wood no stainless collars. No collars needed on the shaft either. What tools would he need and what pieces would he need to do this ? Also he is looking at maple and purpleheart shaft with a first cut already done. If he need to turn these what is used (sandpaper or tools) and what is the best way to establish and maintain a taper on the shaft. I have a lathe that I can do the tenon, ferrule, and tip work but he is wanting to do the shafts on his own. Thanks for any advice..

Making a shaft from scratch is probably one of the hardest, if not the hardest task a cue maker needs to learn. It is extremely hard to do without a shaft machine. He should use shaft blanks that have the last pass already completed and just need the ferrule and tip installed and some sanding.
